Personal Narrative: My Four Years In High School

Being a freshman is the hardest of your four years in high school. Have you ever been pressured to be the best person you can be? This is how my year was as a freshman. Freshman year was the most different I never thought I would of found my way around the school when I first started to go there. Freshman year was the best year throughout my years of high school and it was the only year I had friends. During this year I had a lot of anxieties which dealt with me thinking I’m gonna be alone and not have any friends throughout the year to support me through the whole thing. Also, I would think of the pressure of not doing good in any of my classes so I would think it would affect my GPA in the future. The transition from middle school to high school was a different type of thing to do.

Throughout my four years of high school, I have participated in the Red Cross club. During my time there, I've helped my local community and communties else where. I have helped raise money for premature babies with the March of Dimes, I have cleaned the woods around my town, and I have taught little elemetary school kids about water and bus safety. Whether it was organizing books in the library or mangaing a game booth for less foruntiate kids, one of biggest highlight of my four years at high school has been helping my

High school in its self is an experience. There are many activities and opportunities to take part in. I have been provided the opportunity to have experience many of these during the course of my high school career. The one that stands out to me as most satisfying was when the girls volleyball team went to state. However, I am not a member of the volleyball team; I am a part of the band.

Throughout my high school experience I have developed an interest in how government functions operate and observing it occur in the real world. In 10th grade, I enrolled in AP United States History where I not only learned the roots of democracy, but also how the United States government adapted to issues which arose such as the great depression. My teacher, Mr. Estela, connected many current events to prior similar situations in the history of the U.S.A. and most recently during the 2016 election season I began making those connections on my own.

My freshmen year of high school I decided to try out for the soccer team. High school was a new start. I was ready to make new friends and create new memories. Going into try outs I only knew one other girl on the team. The other people in my grade I knew of them, but I knew little about them. I had never played any sports before. Therefore, I had zero soccer experience. My lack of experience led me to constantly compare myself to other players. I compared how far they kicked the ball, how many goals they got, and how fast they ran. I thought to myself, "I will never be as good as them". The second say of tryouts came around, and I only made it to the first session of two. I had quit. My fear of failure got the best of me, and I lost the opportunity to learn from other people.

After graduation, I was an au pair in Nancy, France for a year before returning in the early fall of 2017. I am continuing my gap period to reapply for school while working full time for Hampton by Hilton.

It was back in second grade, that possibly changed my life. Not allowing me possibly going to the high school I want too. The choices you make in the past, affect your life in the future. Evidence, is the story of myself. How I decided to do the same actions of another kid, that wasn’t the smartest of all.

Leading into my sophomore year of high school, band was the center of my life. Providing social acceptance and a sense of purpose, I could always count on the fine art to get me through the drudgery of high school. Everything seemed to effortlessly go right. I naively believed my desires would always be provided for, as I was somehow the special (albeit, shy) exception. With this idea, I felt invincible going into my first serious audition. Unknown to me, this simple, six hour event, provided the stage on which my perspective would completely change.

The honors and advanced placement courses I have taken throughout high have been my most challenging and the most enjoyable. My teachers motivated me to work harder which in turned helped me to achieve great things academically. Often my classes were smaller and taught in a more tutorial / discussion based rather than the traditional write memorialization style. I met and developed great friendships in all of my classes with other woman of color who placed high importance on obtaining a better than average academic experience in high school. If it were not for the support of my Spanish teacher last year, I would not have thought it was possible to spend seven weeks in Paraguay living with a host family who did not speak any English at all.

It was - and still is - more of a painfully slow transformation than an instantaneous alteration. The shift from “too crave to even talk to the teacher” to “can interject across the room sometimes” marked the start of my growth to becoming a full fledge adult.

Growing up, I was always known by my middle school teachers as that “scatter brained” girl with the low B/C average. After being tested for ADHD by multiple doctors, they all came to the conclusion that I just wasn’t trying hard enough. Entering my freshman year of high school, my determination to succeed in school was higher than ever. I stayed up late every night, went after school for help, and yet I still ended up with a low B average. After all of my hard work, I was still a failure through my and my parents eyes. Throughout sophomore year, my self-esteem in school was lower than ever, but my determination was still pushing me. The end of sophomore year, I hit rock bottom. There have been many moments in my high school career that have made me think to myself, "Wow, I really am less of a child now than I am an adult." Be it my admission into National Honors Society, or my participation in a classical vocal recital at Wheaton College where I was awarded $100 and third place out of twelve of my peers, I couldn't help but think that I was slowly easing myself into adulthood. But the one event in my life that has truly been a milestone of my passage from childhood to adulthood really didn't even happen until the beginning of my third year in high school. This event was when I was accepted into the student secondary education internship program at my school.

Fourteen years ago I was born at Munster Community Hospital. It was March 5, 2001 around 7:30 in the morning. When I was able to go to the house I still live in today. My mom would always tell me that my brother and sister loved me. When I got older I went to The YMCA for preschool. I went there for two years. Those two years flew by, I blinked and was suddenly in Kindergarten. It was the first day and I remember making two friends that I am still friends with today. Next, was first grade, I was in my class with one of my friends from kindergarten. That year went by fast. Second grade was one of the best years because I met my very best friend. I made the transformation the summer before my junior year of high school when I started my first job as a bagger at Giant Foods. The change wasn't noticeable at first, but overtime I was gaining many skills. I worked usually five times a week every week. It felt strenuous at the time, but it put the summer to a better use. I was much more productive that summer than any of the previous ones. When the school year started I was still working. I thought that this you negatively affect my grades because I would have less time to do school work because of all of the work I would be doing, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I better in school than I did ever, even with more challenging classes with less time after school to do my assignments.

The most difficult decision I have had to make over the past two years is deciding whether or not to continue running Cross Country my senior year of high school. I have been running cross country ever since 7th grade. Initially I decided to run cross country because my dad encouraged me to run with him when I was younger. My feelings for cross country have changed through the years and that is what brought me to the point where I had to decide if this sport was for me.
