When I was little I loved building things. I built complicated Rube Goldberg machines, Lego cities, and towering snow forts. However, I did not know that I wanted to go into a engineering field until my experience in the Madison West Rocket Club. The first time I ventured into the club’s disheveled basement, I did not know what to expect. Upon my entrance, I immediately got thrown onto a team of strangers and told the basics of rocketry. While overwhelmed at first, I slowly got accustomed to using power tools, recording flight data, and collaborating with my team. By the end of my first year, my small team of three people qualified for the national Team America Rocketry Challenge competition in Washington DC, where we placed 32nd out of more
Hey ya'll! With the first ever Austin All City Club right around the corner we thought it could be a cool opportunity for us to come together as leaders to pray for club and pray for our city and our kids for this year. In a couple days, all kinds of kids from all over the city will be coming together to have fun and hear about Jesus (maybe 2000 kids, that's nuts). We don't all get together often but this is an awesome time to be reminded of the scope of this ministry in this city and how unique this opportunity is to get to do Young Life with several hundred of our closest friends. (Also, who knows where Zilker Hillside Theater is so this is a great chance to practice getting there without embarassing yourself in front of your kids).
Ottawa-Glandorf athletics taught me more than I ever thought I would have learned. Being apart of Titan sports comes with a stigma: a stigma to be great, to work hard, and to carry good sportsmanship. I participated in Ottawa-Glandorf sports so I could be apart of a team, enhance leadership skills, and build relationships with peers. My freshman year I decided to join the girls soccer team. I was a little hesitant as I was the only Glandorf girl on the team, but after the first week of practice, I met some of my best friends I have today. Although I didn’t get much playing time, I always tried my hardest, gave it my all, and was a leader on and off the field.
“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer,” by Albert Einstein. By persevering and not giving up, success can be reached. Perseverance is one of the themes in the novel “October Sky”. This book revealed the life of a young boy, Homer Hickam Jr., also called Sonny, who fought for his dream of building rockets against all odds amongst a small mining town. As time elapsed in the novel, Sonny matured and learned many lessons about rocketry and life, such as pursuing a dream, the influence of an important person, personal ambition versus loyalty to someone else…
Our hearts pounding and stomachs filled with excitement and nerves as we step into Georgian Court University’s gym. The day has finally come The Shore Conference Championship for girl’s volleyball! The gym is huge nothing like we are used to, you could practically see yourself in the hardwood floors. We are the first team to arrive so we get a feel for the gym before anyone else gets there. Including ourselves there are four teams that will have the chance to play in the final to win The Shore Conference. The first game is the semi-finals our opponent is the team Barnegat. Barnegat is known for there tall middles who like to hit the short corners, so knowing this we had to make adjustments that we are not so familiar with.
When I was in 3rd grade I begged my mom to sign me up for cheerleading. I had always pictured myself on the sideline of a football game. Except, that wasn't exactly what I signed up for. Actually, it wasn't even close My mom signed me up for a team named Rocket Cheer. A team that did not cheer on the sidelines at football games but instead competed in competitions nationwide throughout the whole year. This has been more than just a sport to me. Rocket Cheer has taught me commitment as well as time management, the true meaning of family, how to not give up on any goal, and taught me to be me.
For as long as I can remember I have been designing and then building the ideas that I think of. As my education has grown my ability to refine my planning and drawing skills has made my ideas come to life. When I was younger, I had a fascination with everything mechanical, and liked to take things apart. In college, I have had the pleasure of taking Auto CAD classes which have enhanced my planning skills, allowing me to design better plans and even a few floor plans. I hear Cal Poly Pomona has a great Engineering Department and I think I would be a good fit.
In coming here I expected to just learn about engineering and create a toy for a kid in need, but it ended up being so much more than that. I can now differentiate the types of engineering and which ones I like the best. This camp also helped me realize how I like the physical building and sketching process of engineering rather than the computer components. I also didn’t expect most of the trips and tours that we went on to be intriguing, but I found myself enjoying almost all of them.
On my visit to the Dunwoody campus, I could not wait to look around. I've been attending the Math and Science Academy for seven years. Even before my sixth grade year, I have always enjoyed constructing things, playing with building blocks, and making little robots. On the night of my sixth grade orientation, I visited my school to be and was surprised when I walked in the front door. I was greeted by an eight foot tall robot made by high school students. They were part of the program called For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST). I
I wish I could show you some pictures, I was like an engineer. The shit I built when I was a kid, with nothing to do. We had fun when we build this thing when we had a lot of fun. We had a lot of snow that year, we didn’t have no video games, and school was out for the week because of the divorce and all the change. We made a bridge out of ladders and rope across the property, but if you fell off of it and broke through the snow you fell into the sewer, it was just a trough of drainage because we didn’t have a septic tank. Dad was fuckin’ pissed, we would make a mess of the lawn and ruin all his lobster
During my sophmore year of high school, I decided to join my schools drill team. During drill season my teamates and i would attend all football games that my high school football team played in. in order to get to these football, my team and i would ride on a school bus with fellow band members. THis very crowded bus got very noisy. During this bus ride i liked to use the time to mentally prepare for my performance. The noise from the crowded bus did not allow me to use the time to my advantage. i started to wonder how i could fix this problem. I started to observe the people on the bus. I noticed a lot of people hd headphones or earphones to block out the noise from the bus. I was very intrigued. I decided to bring my own headphones to the next football game to see if this could work. My earphone did not work like i wanted
I hope that site visits are going well! Everyone at Vanderbilt Athletics is excited for Saturday's game.
I open my eyes as I turn my alarm off. I can smell the cold air, and see the yellow and orange rays of sun that come through the window remaining me of the beautiful day that awaits me and the opportunity of being able to live another day. I pull the curtain and look at the beautiful sky and the ecosystem that surrounds me, and how it interacts in complete harmony.
I shared my story: Okay so, somebody said that I should watch out. I asked “why.” They said, “wait and find out what they meant.” I was walking down the hallway and somebody said “hey, you nigger, we don’t want you here!” I turned around and started running away from them. They caught up and grabbed me then threw me down. They all hit me in my face and was kicking me as hard as they could. I went to the nurse and said “all these boys just started beating me as I was walking down the hallway.” She asked “did any adult seen it and then I told her “no.” When I told her no she said “get out and she didn’t believe me.” I left and as I
High school athletics can form a bond that nothing else can. Throughout my high school career I have been blessed with the opportunity to participate in multiple sports such as cross country, basketball, and track. These sports have shaped my character in a way that nothing else has. It has taught me to stay loyal to those who push me to be better, it has taught me to encourage others when they think they can go no farther as well as the other way around, and it has taught me that the people you play with in high school will have an effect on your life forever. They turned me into a person that is willing to go the extra mile for someone, and they have turned me into a person that will not give up in the sight of
My whole life I have always wanted to become a successful engineer, and graduate from the University of Cincinnati. Some of my goals in life are to go to the University of Cincinnati. Another one of my goals is to become some type of engineer. But as of right now I would like to be a aerospace engineer. To be honest I really don’t know what influenced me to want to become and engineer. But something about engineering always appealed to me for some reason. But lately my engineering teacher has had a positive impact on me and is really making me like engineering and the overall field. So I guess that Mr. Smith has influenced me into being an engineer. My plan b is to be an engineer too. But this type of engineering would just be easier to
