The reason I am writing to you is to tell you from a student’s point of view about our higher education system’s federal financial aid, at least in Virginia; hoping that something may be done at some point when you are the President of the United States.
First, I am 22 years old, have Cerebral Palsy, and a college senior at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. I am doing a double major in Classics with a Latin Concentration and in Music with an interest in Violin and Musicology. The fact that I lost all my financial aid until I did the SAP appeal in 2014 but not this time in 2016, and the fact that I owe $4k for the spring semester this time in 2016 but not in 2014. It is a similar situation for both semesters. Therefore, it should be taken care of the same way, at least one would think. It is unfortunate that the U.S. Department of Education was unhelpful, and the only service that was helpful with information, cannot do anything about it.
What I hope would happen is that the federal financial aid requirements, rules, and regulations become clear-cut across the states to every state-funded college and university. That way the discrepancies that are currently happening can be avoided. What are your thoughts about this situation?

In the past fifty years since the inception of the Higher Education Act, federal policies regarding financial aid have expanded in scope, intent, and access. Prior to this landmark legislation, federal intervention and financial support of higher education was minimal, with most of the control lying with individual states. Whereas financial support for higher education was previously directed at institutions, federal financial aid provided funding for individual students, initially as a means for increasing access for underrepresented and disadvantaged populations. The evolution of federal financial aid represents the historical, political, and policy changes during the past five decades and illustrates the gradual shift in societal values
With all this going on, completing my financial aid became something that was set to the side. I was crippled and was only focused on getting better and not getting kicked out of UCONN.
State legislators slashed more than $121 million from college financial aid programs alone, leaving 29,000 students without the possibility of receiving aid from TEXAS grants, the state’s financial aid program for needy students. Since Texas colleges and universities were also cut 9 percent by the legislator, they were forced to raise prices for students. Due to the uncertainty of the Texas financial aid, many college administrators reported losing numerous highly qualified students to out-of-state universities and colleges and many families have lost the ability to pay for tuition because of the lack of resources.

America’s gift to my generation is amazing because veterans have used all their potential for us. They fought for us to be alive right now. Their gift to us is much more than I expected. I am so thankful and I appreciate all they have done for us.
America a nation of numerous nom de plumes such as the home of the brave, the melting-pot, the land of the free, and the land of milk and honey. These names have their own individual significance and it is what each of those names stand for that I am able to say that I am a proud American. To me being a proud American means understanding the significance of the many monikers that this nation holds and helping to ensure that these America remains deserving of these monikers.
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.”
Another remarkable moment in the federal financial aid history was the Higher Education Act of 1965 signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. Title IV of Higher Education Act of 1965 provided college student financial supports through scholarships, work-study programs and low-interest student loans including Pell Grants. The Higher Education Act had been reauthorized in 1972, 1976, 1980, 1986, 1992, 1998 and 2008 to insure institutional quality and equal access. As reported by The office of Federal Student Aid, the Award Year 2015-2016 Recipient Summary shows that there are 9,113,651 federal loans and grants recipients which are greatly larger than the 1.15 million before adopting G.I. Bill. Figure 1 showed that from 1993-94 to 2013-14, the total Federal student aid had notably increase especially between 2003-04 and 2013-14, total federal aid per FTE student increased by 61%. Presently, the availability of educational opportunities at the college and university level is a critical state and personal interest given the needs of the state for a well-educated workforce which has never been greater. Too many, the focal point of attending college is receiving a high paying job in the future. I’m working on cooking our family dinner and he’s currently working on a 10th grade essay, where he describes what he wants to become when he grows up. In class we watched a video over a very opinionated male who explained the reason why America is not great. I have a lot of respect for this man and I think that he brought up some extremely valid points that I have never thought about. What I mainly want to touch on is the fact that he accused my generation of being apathetic. He basic says that we could care less and are lazy good for nothings. The best response I can think of is, look at who raised us. Now, I am not saying that it is entirely our parents fault or their parents fault for the reason why teenagers do not care about school, grades, or the world. Some people may be confused in what responsibility even means. Does it mean be nice, make good decisions, and do what you're told? I've been taught many responsibilities throughout my life and the most important one is to try my hardest to walk in the light of Jesus. To do this I try to learn from my mistakes, treat others the way I want to be treated. Whenever I get the opportunity I bring God into the subject to try to show every one what a loving and caring father he his no matter how many mistakes you've made. I want people to know that no matter what they do or say to me, I will never deny my beliefs for God I will always shine my light and try to impact as many lives as I can. I am international student that recently just graduated from Randolph College . My attendance to college was made possible by the generous support of the college in forms of scholarships and grants which greatly helped me. I received a total of $25000 of financial aid every school year. In addition to this , I was given a work study job that contributed to the payment of my college fees .
In today’s society, it is said that having a college degree will have long term benefits. However, for some people, they wonder if college is worth it. The reason why is because of the cost of attending college. Unlike public schools, going to college is not free. Being able to attend a four-year accredited college with scholarships is almost deemed a miracle. Being able to choose which school to fit in your price range is almost heart breaking. The cost of attendance will increase based on accreditation and location. You cannot pay for college with cash money alone. With the help of financial aid, students are given money based on their parent’s income. For some low poverty students, the hopes of getting financial aid is their way to college. For others, parents set aside a trust or college fund to give to their children. Another way students pay for college is through scholarships that they earn locally, through the state, or even on a national scale. However, when the scholarships run out, a student is forced to take out student loans, and the steps after taking the money are not told until after graduation. The student debt rate is overwhelming in this country. No one wants to talk about it because it is being swept under the rug.
