In my ongoing quest to highlight up and coming talent, the advent of Havana Guppy's presence on the entertainment scene is a welcome addition as she is a remarkable young actress whose star has been on the rapid ascent in the last six months. She has the singular honor of appearing in three highly anticipated new series that are beginning to garner much attention. Recently, Havana and I chatted about how she began in the business, her current and forthcoming roles, and how she keeps an equable head in spite of obstacles, negativity, and pressures. wp-1476199746016.png RH: Why did you decide to become an actress? HG: When I was really young, like around three, I loved being on camera. My dad would always record me and my sisters, and I would …show more content…
I wanted people to feel different emotions, and I thought it would be really cool if I could make people really happy or cry or get really angry. That was the thing. I really liked that. And that's what really made me want to pursue being an actor. So when were you able to begin pursuing this professionally? When I was four, that's when I got an agent and started going out for jobs. Oh, so your parents were supportive of you doing it when you were young? Yes, they were totally …show more content…
I play sixteen-year-old Mary who is part of this religious group. I mainly had scenes with Mitchell Kummen and Taylor Hickson. What was your experience working with Mitchell and Taylor? I had a great time when we were on set. It was cool 'cause I had never really been on anything like that or played that kind of character before. And it was great 'cause Mitch and Taylor and I got a long so well. So we just had so much fun together. Mitch strikes me as one who can get along well with anybody. Oh, yeah! And it helps me to be around him 'cause I'm a really shy person. I'm not one to be talking to everyone, so Mitch did help me feel really included which was really nice. So tell us about Haters Back Off. What can you tell us about your character and the show? My character is a really small part, but even though it is small, it was so much fun. I used to watch the American YouTuber Miranda Sings when I was younger, so just to be able to work with her was pretty cool. Some people don't know her, but I was kinda low-key excited to see her 'cause when I was like thirteen, I watched her videos. So just working with her was super cool. Everyone was so nice, and it was just a really fun set to be on. Everything was so funny. I had never done a comedy before, so it was kinda cool. And just watching the actors improv and make stuff
I participated in the Lion King Musical put on by D.C, Everest. My part was in the ensemble.
We had SO much fun. Loved working with Andie and loved getting to know her a bit. Behind the scenes stories... hmmmm. There was a funny high heel shoe to my forehead story! We were on a romantic stroll and Andie's character falls and we end up laying with each other. When we shot it, her shoe shot up and landed on my forehead leaving a massive "golf ball" bump! Luckily, it was the last scene on a Friday and pretty much was back to normal by Monday :)
When I read the audition scene, I was immediately drawn to how amazing the script was! Also, in my audition scene, I had to play piano, which I have been doing since I was four, so I believe that was an advantage for me.
All the cast members are extremely talented and energetic. Whether it be a ballad or a big group number, the vocals are always fantastic. The assistant director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw has had a blast and has made the performers tap-dance, dance swing and jive, jump about on the stage, and sing, all during the same number. The scriptwriters have done an amazing job to make, what otherwise seems like a simple story, work on many ways.
“My mum going through cancer and parents getting divorced I think created a need for some sort of outlet. I pretty much woke up one day and decided to be a director.”
Yes, we were both in the episode, but I didn't have the chance to see her or work with her. True, but I know your character wasn't very nice.
“I spent some of my childhood backstage in a small-town theatre. My earliest interest in storytelling came from the theatre, and I imagined myself as an actor. But Great Expectations and other novels by Dickens inspired me to want to write.
I have auditioned and cast nearly 40 roles between three short animated videos, one live action short film and a 10 minute play. Similar to casting for your production’s, I had to weigh various traits, such as appearance, voice, chemistry, comedic timing, and more in my decision of who to
Even when I was young I loved Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie. I loved reading about the pioneers and settlers. It's always been a side interest of mine. So when I heard When Calls the Heart came to Vancouver, I remember putting that on my radar and thinking that's a show I would be interested in. I got asked to audition for the role of Julie Thatcher, and that went really well! It was looking like I would potentially be playing this role. I went to network for it. Then I was asked to dye my hair, so I kind of assumed "Great! I'll play Elizabeth's sister!" At the last minute it fell apart and someone else was cast. I guess they remember me though, and the role of Faith popped up towards the end of the second season and my name was thrown out for that. I was actually out of town, but they asked me to put some Faith scenes on tape, which I did. I shot them in terrible lighting with just my laptop camera. I actually found them a couple weeks ago, and I've considered releasing them, but they're just so bad! (Laughs) So I threw it together quickly and sent it to my agent. I sort of forgot about it, because as far as I was concerned, the better role was to play Elizabeth's sister. Then I found out I had
My favourite part was the sleeping scene when people keep waking up and walking around and bumping into each other. I thought the acting was amazing! An especially amazing part of the show was when Bambi Bernét’s (played by Chelsey Ette-Carberry) microphone fell off
Their costumes were amazing very realistic and funny, again love their creativity, especially how they added little bits of modern comedy and the narration was great. When the audience had the break and coming back in their setup was still great everything was perfect nothing falling or hanging off. As well as the switching of lights in the beginning middle and end it was beautiful and smooth.
It was something I wanted to do for ages I had always wanted to be a actress. There was a lot of auditioning around 3 months. My favorite part of making the movie was the people the hair lady the makeup lady because they were all nice. Out of the movie if I could bring 1 thing back to the real world it would be my wound and i would make everyone in my way fall to the ground.
How did you land the role of Chet in UnREAL? Were you surprised at the success of the show?
I was part of the crew, but I never did anything like this in my life. I was never a part of any musical so I felt intimidated, but I wanted to try something new. I think it was a great experience, I sing and play guitar, but I was always shy to get in front of an audience. I’ve seen the individuals who were part of a cast and I know some personally and it was inspiring to see how they change as an actor.
Acting is a survival mechanism.Without it I wouldn't be the dramatic and sassy young lady I am today. Acting isn't an activity or a hobby to me it's a lifetime committee. If i tried to walk away my heart wouldn't allow me. It's so gratifying I can be whoever I want with a different voice, look, and personality. When I'm rehearsing I get chills up my whole body, and when I'm performing I am that character Za'Charie no longer exist. If I could write Acting a love letter I would say "Oh, My true love I love you like a fat kid love red velvet cakes."
