The sun shone brightly across the sky as small waves lapped against the rocks of the shoreline. The lake stayed perfectly calm aside from us three kids playing in the murky green water. Clouds floated overhead while my mom silently read her favorite book in the sunshine. Alex, Taylor, and I had just returned from tubing behind Alex’s father's boat. Fueled by adrenaline, we decided to play one of our favorite games, king of the tube. This became a decision we would regret. Alex suddenly threw Taylor and I overboard and we both desperately attempted to climb back on top of the taco shaped tube. After several minutes of trying to take back control, we made no progress, and I began to lose hope. Neither of us could seem to get a grip on the handles
Dustin Vaughan had a terrible game on Sunday night. He didn’t look comfortable in the pocket threw picks & just was all over the place with the ball. Showers showed poised while being very calm while in the pocket. When moving outside of the pocket he always kept his eyes downfield to look for open wide-receivers. The fact that Showers can play special teams and make tackles he wouldn’t be a waste to use for the 46 game day roster if coaches decide to use him. I also considered that the Cowboys could go back to keeping two quarterbacks and hoping they could land Showers on practice squad.
he book I read over the summer is called “The Color Of Water” by “James McBride” This book tells the story of the author's struggles growing up with racial identity issues. He struggled as a child finding out whether he was black or white, but choose to identify as black. He once questioned his mother what color God was, and she replied that he was the color of water. James had many tough times dealing with household struggling with money and twelve children, but when his stepfather, Hunter Jordan died he fell into a void of drugs, alcohol and thievery. He was sent to Kentucky where his sister lives, and was educated by a man nicknamed “Chicken Man’ on how James was wasting his life. James listened, turned away from his old life and became
In the memoir, The Color of Water, James McBride describes his life and interviews his mother. During his life, James faces many obstacles that affect him. A few people who affect his life in his memoir are his mother, stepfather, and The Chicken Man. Some of these are in positive ways and some are in negative. The Chicken Man has a positive affect on James McBride's life. While his mother and stepfather had more of a negative effect to his life.
The Color of Water by James McBride is a book that caused me to recall my life with my mother, the woman who was always there for me, my best friend and a person who I believed only cared if it was regarding my education or Buddhism. Throughout my entire life, my mom only had one idea that she drilled into my head: “Nếu bạn muốn chiến đấu với tôi, sau đó đi trước và chiến đấu với tôi. Bởi vì tất cả tôi muốn làm là giúp quý vị, con. Bạn sẽ là cái chết của tôi,” which translates to “If you want to fight with me, then go ahead and fight with me. Because all I want to do is help you, child. You will be the death of me.” In many ways, I noticed that McBride’s descriptions of his mother are very much similar to my own. It was only when McBride was an adult that he saw that his mother cared for him every step of the way and whatever she did was for him and his siblings. This makes me realize that I have someone really special in my life and that I should give my mother a chance while I still can, because there might come a day when the
It is important to find out who you are. In order to find out who you are, you must start you’re roots and if you have no roots or are unable to reach them, finding where you came from to help find yourself becomes really difficult. Also it’s hard to find yourself when you have others telling you who you are and who you are supposed to be. These two put together makes it extremely hard to find yourself. In James McBride’s memoir The Color of Water, James McBride has conflicting feelings of being biracial illustrates how important it is to know where you came from and who you are in order to move forward in your life.
Although hollywood movies are well known for their secular nature, The book of eli is an exception. The scenes in which Eli defends the Book(the bible) with his life was one of extreme conviction as a christian and equally thought provoking to non-believers. Through several memorable scenes, Eli begins to show Solara the power of the Bible – “not as a tool for conquest, but as a handbook for living”. Some Bible verses are quoted throughout the movie, and Christian imagery and symbolism are present in many scenes.
For my cultural cache book report I chose to read the book, The Color of Water by James McBride. I learned several things about what life was like in the mid-1900’s and in which may be why we still face issues with racial differences. McBride does a great job of illustrating his internal and external challenges that he faces throughout his life. I also learned more about African American culture in the United States and gave me a desire to be a part of positive change to this particular racial group.
As people mature they seen to comprehend the obstacles they are faced with and start focusing on their future and leave the past behind them. Overcoming hardships in life will lead people to have a suitable, satisfying life. In the memoir, The Color of Water, James McBride tries to move away from his past and understand the racial encounters he has been faced with, which demonstrates the difficulty of finding your own path in life.
James McBride's memoir, The Color of Water, demonstrates a man's search for identity and a sense of self that derives from his multiracial family. His white mother, Ruth's abusive childhood as a Jew led her to search for acceptance in the African American community, where she made her large family from the two men she marries. James defines his identity by truth of his mother's pain and exceptionality, through the family she creates and the life she leaves behind. As a boy, James questions his unique family and color through his confusion of issues of race. Later in his life, as an adolescent, his racial perplexity results in James hiding from his emotions, relying only on the anger he felt against the
These are two different cases of murder. One is supposedly out of self-defense, and the other could have been murder with intent, or accidental. It is unknown. Facts about the cases show that George Zimmerman’s murder trial could have been pressured by the public, assumedly because he killed a black man, Trayvon Martin. Witnesses’ accounts and evidence from 911 calls support Zimmerman’s claim that he shot Trayvon out of self-defense. Autopsy reports also indicated that Trayvon was shot at a very close range. Witness accounts report that Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman, beating him up. It was later reported that he had a broken nose and cuts on the back of his head (CNN Library (b), 2016). These are evidence that aligns with Zimmerman’s story of self-defense.
What identifies you? If it was not for one’s race, religion, gender, or atmosphere of their surroundings what would their identity be? To answer that one may need to know what identity means; identity is what make you as a person, the thing that may define a person like race, gender, and religion. Identity can be closely correlated with The Color of Water by characters always thriving to find his or her own identity. In the memoir The Color of Water by James McBride, the author has trouble finding his own identity and understanding his mother by trying to find his own race, how religion means different things in the world, and the behavior along with the atmosphere of their surroundings.
Maria woke up and thought to herself, I need a change. Something adventurous. Maybe I’ll go to that strange lake I saw. It sure is hot today. And I think I deserve the rest since papa made me work so hard yesterday. With that in mind, she slipped on the worn ruffle dress her sister had passed on to her three years ago. Maria missed her sister, Margarita. Margarita had died many many years ago, at the young age of nine. Seeing that Maria possessed a petite figure, and that Margarita was abnormally tall, Margarita gave the young Maria the dress as a birthday gift. The story goes, Margarita and three toddlers named Juan, José, and Alejandro were playing in the dirt when their mother came up to them and yanked them as hard as she could. You see, her husband had been gone for longer and longer trips out west at a time, and only came back
Summer of 1994. New York City smelled no different than hot rat piss and looked accordingly. Fresh off my 15th birthday and wandering the Brooklyn streets with Hakeem, we followed the music wherever it played. Our community cherished music through constant airplay. Anyone with loud speakers, either in their car, apartment, or boombox, blared any of the anthems from the future greats. Whether it's Nas, Wu-Tang, Biggie, or Tribe, the list is blissfully endless. Hakeem’s brother, a well-connected music promoter, gave Hakeem two tickets to this secret show he was putting on for Ice Cube, who, despite being the first notable west coast rapper, carries a rage within him that the east coast entirely recognizes.
Every year, a certain event takes place that is just as important to my family and I as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July. However, most of America doesn’t even know this event exists. A five day festival held the first week in August in a small town along the North Shore. In 2015, this little town in the upper northeast region of Minnesota was named “America’s Coolest Small Town,” by Budget Travel. This small town is known as Grand Marais and is home to around 1,341 people. In the 1930s, Grand Marais was a small village with a primary focus on logging and commercial fishing. Many of the community members in this small village decided to gather together for a shoreline picnic as a way to get to know one another and have a good time. This shoreline picnic is now called Fisherman’s Picnic, and has been a tradition carried on for 86 years. The Grand Marais Lions and Lioness Clubs along with many other community organizations work for months preparing for the 10,000 to 15,000 people in attendance each year. Tourist around the country come to partake in this small community gathering that offers a variety of unique events and great food.
On a special day I was enjoying myself casually at my friends house playing on his Xbox and going up against the other partiers inside the household. So I was an average kid who sat around on the computer and playing sports, I planned so much fun things to do on this day!
