We finally reached our destination which felt like hiking the Appalachian Trail. We took a deep breath and scrabbled straight towards the bread aisle. Unfortunately, they ran out of Sunbeam bread, so we were forced to get the bread that made my organs to come out. Whole wheat bread! Next, we headed for the refrigerated food area and grabbed a dozen eggs. As we turned the corner, for checkout, I saw lines of cargo train. I was about to fall down to my knees and wail, but a nice woman gave up her spot and saved me from going unconscious. We were then heading towards the car.
My tummy abruptly came back to life, after it heard it was going to get food. I didn’t want it to die again. I tugged my grandma to walk faster and faster until
America today has become an unhealthy nation and the disconnect from nature can be at blame. In the book the women states to Bill, “She said you guys were a couple of overweight wimps who didn't know the first thing about hiking and that she was tired of carrying you." (Bryson) From this quote it can be understood that many of us would like to think of American’s as dumb and fat. Nature needs to be reestablished as part of out lifestyle in order to create healthier living. Going for a walk on a trail, paddling a canoe, going bird watching or even finishing is not part of the American lifestyle any longer. For many on weekends as Americans the choice of watching television would come before camping for the weekend. Being outdoors can inspire
During the summer before my Freshman year I went to hell and back, and by hell I mean Philmont scout ranch. Just a little background, Philmont scout ranch is 140,117 thousand acres of big rugged, dry, mountainous terrain. I knew what I was getting into, Ever since I joined boy scouts Philmont was regarded as the ultimate scouting experience, so of course i was pressured into that. Eventually summer rolled around and before I knew it I was on a train to New Mexico.
I grab the trunk sitting in the corner of my room and opened it and saw things in there that we weren’t able to take on the trail so I got rid of everything in it and I putting some pillows, blankets, cloth diapers, sewing kit, hunting kit, a first aid kit, wagon repair kit that our friend gave to us when we bought the wagon, and some tools. I noticed that my husband was behind me so i asked if he could help me take this trunk out side because it was heavy. We got back to the room and I saw that I forgot to put the bible in the trunk so I put it on the night stand. It started getting light outside James and I finished gathering our flour, sugar, and salt. He went and woke up Hope and then he came out of their room carrying George. After putting everything on the wagon I then noticed that the butter turner wasn't there so I had James go and get it while I went back inside the house to grab Hope’s doll and the bible that I left sitting on the night stand last night. I go back outside to see that James also got the chickens on the side of the wagon and the oxen attached and ready to pull the wagon and we on our way to
You have two nieces, it's really nice. Kids are amazing and innocent. One of my friends live in Hopkinton, he has an 18months old daughter. She is really cute, sometimes I visit him just to play with the kiddo :) Syracuse is not very far, it's really nice to have family close by. Do your parents live close your brother?
Ever heard of the Appalachian trail, it’s 2,000 miles of wildness stretched of all you see.
Humans are animals. Even as developed, personalized, and intelligent as we are, we share a deep connection with every living thing. However, many of the problems in the world result from the human belief that technology is more powerful and can replace the serene, perfect essence of nature. I believe that a connection with nature can heal wounds and help humans find balance in their lives.
Besides soccer, sledding is something my sister and I love to do on snowy afternoons. We have this amazing hill at our house thats super steep and has lots on turns; its the perfect sledding hill. The only problem with it is that at the end of the hill there is a road. My father didn’t want us sledding on the hill until he could put a fence up to keep us from sliding into the middle of the road.
Crammed in a 1992 Ford truck that is supposed to seat three people, my brother, sister, dad, and I surprisingly arrived at my dad’s favorite park; it just happened to be over an hour away. This mini trek felt as if it lasted for hours. At first, I dreaded piling up to listen to my family complain about having each others’ elbows touching for more time than I would have liked. I soon discovered the uncomfortable ride would be worth it. Once we reached the winding road where we significantly decreased our speed from the highway, my siblings and I grew with excitement to finally be able to stretch our legs and go hiking. We unloaded the truck to spend a couple hours at what we called Great Falls Park.
There are many aspects of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian trail is 2,200 beautiful miles long. The trail goes through 14 states and 5 national parks. ¨It runs from Georgia to Maine, making it the longest marked trail in the country, and one of the longest in the world.¨ 4,019 people hiked the trail in 2010. Out of all the years that the trail has been here only 12,000 hikers actually made it through the entire trail. The hardest part of the trail is located in Georgia. More than 4,000 volunteers help every year to keep the trail maintained. The trail began 70 years ago and was a vision of the Benton Mackaye who is known as “the father of the appalachian trail.
In the midst of presidential elections, several candidates have spoken up about immigration policies in the United States. As a Mexican-American citizen, I have personally experienced the transition from one country to another and have come to realize that just as me, there are many immigrants with different stories behind why they chose California as a home. This state in the West Coast has been categorized as a venue in which the “California Dream” is possible to achieve. However, there is not just one dream or one cause; there is diversity among the population and thus, there is also diversity among causes and outcomes immigrants have.
Riding along the Oregon Trail can be treacherous, risky, and at times perilous. Some aspects that make it so dangerous are: hunger, disease, suicide, a broken wagon, falling out of the wagon and getting run over by the wheels, Indians attacking, and … storms. Believe it or not , storms cause substantial amounts of trouble. I am fortunate enough to say, I, Dahlia Clark, lived to tell about it.
One cold, dreadful winter day in November, the wind was biting at our faces, high in the Ouachita mountains at Ash Creek deer camp, I would have to face my most dreaded fear. I would be faced with losing the person that means the uttermost to me.
The sun was glistening through the tall, swaying pines. To the right of the trail, a gentle river flowed softly down towards the mouth of the lake. Walking across the rickety wooden bridge, I inhaled a deep breath of refreshingly crisp mountain air. The sun beat down on me as I made my way across the bridge and back onto the well-used hiking trail. The ambient sounds of chirping birds, babbling water, and the croaks of several frogs filled my ears as I made my way around the bend. As I entered the mouth of the forest, I could see my father standing in the middle of the path, glancing upwards, taking in the beauty that had began to engulf us. “We better get going.” he said, looking back at me. “There’s still many miles to go.” I smiled and turned, taking in one last view of the beautiful creekside. Then, with determination, we set out to finish the challenging trek we had started.
The coat of armor I adorned, made of down feathers and a nylon shell, yielded no protection against the daggers of that cold winter air. As I peered out toward the horizon, I saw nothing but tree tops, and some snow capped mountain tops in the distance. With my feet bound to freshly waxed skis, the only thing stronger than my ski poles was my determination to get down the mountain.
We humans are social animals. We normally prefer others around us and enjoy sharing experiences with others. In some situations, some of us like to experience the world alone. If the empty, open trail beckons you, then solo hiking might be what you’re looking for. There may be potential consequences when solo hiking which you need to be prepared to deal such as being prepared for solo hiking, and the dangers of solo hiking.
