Classical Ballet vs. Martha Graham

The first time I ever saw a live dance show was when I was in the fourth grade. I remember going on a field trip see The Nutcracker, and I recall sitting in a huge auditorium with seats just like the movie theaters, red velvety curtains, and gold trims. It was definitely something I was not use to seeing. When the curtains went up, I was astonished at how amazing the ballerinas were. That field trip definitely opened my eyes to a new experience. Since then, dance has changed in many ways such theirs costumes, dance movements, and music.
Europeans ballet became increasingly popular around Paris Opera in the eighteenth century. Costumes produced for female dancers in The Swan Lake were short tutus, also known as the “classical tutu” (Anderson 79). A classical tutu consists of a round, stiff, and flared skirt. This form of tutu permits the dancers to move freely and effortlessly. Most importantly, this allows the ballerina’s to show off their entire legs and footwork as they perform challenging and precise steps. For example, pointe footwork was used more frequently where female dancers were on their toes throughout the entire performances, and this type of footwork requires a skilled professional. According to Anderson, “The secret of toe dancing lies not in the shoe, but in the ballerina’s properly trained body” (83). You can imagine how much training and pain the dancers went through. The dedication and hard work paid off when pointe dance became mastered by the late nineteenth century. This type of progress formed a fantasy of weightlessness and floating.
