I got a rush of excitement after I was called to the office to leave, as any high schooler would, but this time was different. I felt sick as I collected my things and started my way to the office. As I walked in, the secretary was standing behind her desk with a distressed look on her face. It was then that I knew something was horribly wrong. As I approached her she informed me that something had happened to my grandpa and that my aunt would be picking me up shortly to take me to the hospital. She made sure to tell me that he probably wouldn’t make it and that she was very sorry. Many of the band members are assigned an eighth grade “band buddy” for the night who they stay with for activities and marching before the Friday night football game. One of my friends was assigned a boy who we were told was different and may have problems feeling comfortable in such a social setting and high school in general the coming year. Considering the events from the year before and how my grandpa had affected so many lives, I immediately took the opportunity and made it my goal to help this boy feel at home in this environment so I aided my friend. The night was a success and I really bonded with the boy. He is very funny and just an overall awesome guy. We have continued to bond ever since. Now, almost two years later, I’m still proud to call the boy my friend. I believe it is safe to say that he has found a perfect niche where he can flourish and be himself. It has been told to me through many channels of communication that I have in fact made an impact on my friend’s life, but more importantly he has made an impact on mine. I never understood the influence of compassion on a fellow peer of adolescence until then, that was when I realized the responsibility of being conscious of others’
