Tchaikovsky was born into a family of four brothers and two sisters. His father Ilya Petrovich Tchaikovsky was an engineer by profession and was posted as a lieutenant colonel in the Department of Mining. His mother the second wife of Ilya Tchaikovsky was 18 years younger than her husband and belonged to French lineage. Pyotr loved his mother; often they saw concerts together, which sparked his interest in music. At age five, Tchaikovsky started taking piano lessons all while he was learning fluent French and German by the governess employed at their house.
