Perseus who is a demigod, son of a mortal woman and a powerful god. One of the most known heroes to come before the Trojan War. Like any other demigod, he had incredible strength and courage. Known to be a slayer, killing a very feared monster. Also known for being a hero and saving people. Like most demigods, he too had a prophecy to fulfill, he had many obstacles to face and challenges to take on. According to Cartwright, Perseus is the son of Danaë, princess of Argos (“Perseus”) and Zeus the God of the Heavens. His grandfather Acrisius, the father of Danaë, had a prophecy told by Apollo that his grandchild would be the one to kill him. So he took matters into his own hands and locked his daughter in a sunken house made of bronze. Trying to prevent her from having any children (Hamilton, 197). According to Cartwright, Zeus came to her in a golden shower, which her father did not believe, and she bore his child. After discovering of his grandchild, and had someone make him a box …show more content…
He was sent on that quest by Polydectes, the king of Seriphos which he called home, to be separated from his mother. The king hoped that Perseus would be killed, if he had failed to bring him the head of Medusa he would take possession of the mother. Perseus was guided by the goddess Athena and god Hermes, with their help he defeated Medusa (Hamilton, 199). As he was requested by the king he took her head to show his accomplishment of the task. On his way back he came across a woman in trouble, Andromeda. She was being terrorized by a sea monster that Poseidon had sent to kill her. Perseus used Medusa's head to turn the monster into stone and save her. When he got home he found out that his mother was being abused by Polydectes, he made sure to present the head to him but made sure the stare caught his eye. Therefore turning him into stone, he proceeded to give the head of Medusa to Athena as a gift
King Acrisius was king of Argos. He had an amazingly beautiful daughter, but he wished deeply for a son, so he prayed to the gods for them to give him a son. Apollo, the god of culture and prophecy, told him that he will never have a son in all his days and that the son of his daughter will slay him. Acrisius thinks of just killing his daughter,Danae, to prevent his prophecy, but fears of the punishment he will receive from the gods for this act, so he instead locks his daughter in an entirely bronze house and guards it closely. What he did not expect is for the king of the gods Zeus to come directly to his daughter and impregnate her. From this comes a son named Perseus. When Acrisius learns of his daughter's offspring, he puts both Perseus and Danae in a trunk and sets it off into the ocean. By luck or by the will of Zeus Perseus and Danae wash up onto a small island, where a kind hearted fisherman named Dictys takes in the two strangers. They live contently with Dictys until Dictys' brother, King Polydectes, fell in love with Danae. He decides to construe a plot to get rid of her son,Perseus, so that he can have her. The plan he comes is to convince Perseus to go and slay the woman-beast Medusa. He thinks this feat impossible by a mortal man, because any man who lays eyes upon her turns to stone. To aid him on his quest Hermes gives him a sword stronger than that of Medusa's scale. He also told him he would need equipment from the nymphs of the north, who's location was unknown by all except the Gray Women who are ray and live in gray. The three sisters share one eye between them all and
The story goes something like this Kore the young Persephone was kidnapped by her uncle Hades on the word of his brother Zeus which gave him the permission to, anyway took her down to the underworld raped her and made her his bride.
My favourite myth is Hercules.Hercules originated in Greece and Rome.He is a demigod of Greece and Rome.He is the son of Zeus, the god of all gods, and the son of Alcmene, who is a mortal woman.Hercules has all the same problems as all the mortals on the earth he just has superhuman strength too.He has incredible strength and stamina.Hercules liked to help the citizens of Greece and Rome like to save them from danger such as falling buildings and run away animals. They say that Hercules was invincible, even though he died.He was a normal man with demigod powers.
When there is hardship and struggle, there is reward. The myth of Jason and Perseus teaches the importance of having faith in oneself. Young god Perseus was born when Zeus turned to liquid gold and impregnated Danaë. As a child Perseus was cared for by Dictys and his mother Danaë while his father Zeus watched over him. As Perseus grew older his mother was threatened by the king, Polydectes.
Perseus and his mother landed on the island of Seriphos, where Polydectes ruled. His brother Dictys was a fisherman. He found the chest and freed them. By then Perseus had grown up to be a strong young man. This is important because Polydectes wanted to marry Danae (Perseus mother), but Perseus didn’t allow it. Because of these actions Perseus was banished until he could bring back the head of Medusa.
Perseus was known for his great physical strength as well as his bravery. After he grew a little bit more, the king of the island Polydectes pretended to marry his friend’s daughter and wanted everyone to bring a gift, and knowing perseus was poor he would pretend to get furious and get into a huge argument to where he would want perseus to go find and kill Medusa and bring the head back. So Polydectes was wanting to send him on a death mission so he would not have to worry about him anymore. So Perseus went on a search to find the The Graiai that were actually 3 other sisters of the gorgon Medusa, they shared an eye between the three of them. So Perseus went to go and find the Graiai to get directions on the whereabouts of Medusa.
In the myth Perseus tells the story of Medusa by Ovid the series of events leading up to how Medusa's head is cut off by Perseus and how Medusa becomes a monster is explained. In the myth, when Perseus decides to defeat Medusa, she is seen as a villain. On the contrary, when the story of how Medusa turns into a monster unfolds, she can be seen as a victim. When Perseus reaches Medusa's lair, he observes the victims of her powers and has the constant thought that he could lose his life and mission by simply looking into Medusa's eyes. She is seen as the villain when Perseus goes to Medusa's lair and successfully defeats her, but nonetheless Perseus is affected by Medusa's awe inspiring appearance, "Nevertheless, he had himself looked at the
Medusa was a murder victim. Medusa’s head was looked at as a treaured item, her eyes would turn people into stone. Perseus, Zeus’s son, a Greek hero, and a monster slayer was sent on a mission. Perseus’ mission was to chop Medusa’s head off to use her eyes to
Perseus wanted to rest in an area controlled by Atlas. But atlas had heard a prophecy that a son of Zeus would steal his golden apples so he refused to let percues stay. So perseus showed him medusa's head which turned him into stone, which according to greek mythology is the origin for the atlas mountains in north west africa.
When Perseus found the island the Gorgons were on he saw that all of them were sleeping. Since he couldn’t look directly at them he used the shield to look at them through a mirror-like shield. In the shield he saw that their bodies were covered in scales and they also had big wings and a hair of snakes (Hamilton 204). Perseus saw which one was Medusa and started flying towards her (mind you if any of the Gorgon sisters woke up they wouldn’t be able to see him because he had the cap of darkness on. When he got a couple feet away from Medusa Athena guided his hand and he cut off her head with a single swipe. Right after Perseus cut off her head a winged horse named Pegasus and his own came flying out of her dead body (Gall 38). Medusas sisters woke up to find Medusa’s head cut off and they were looking for her murderer. They were not able to find Perseus because he had the cap of darkness on (Hamilton
There are many different ways the story of Perseus and Medusa are told. One of the ways that is told is that, Acrisius was the king of Argos, the oracle of Delphi told the king that his daughter Danae’s son will one day kill him. Acrisius couldn’t let that happen. Acrisius was scared, so he deprived his daughter with any possible contact with outside world by, locking her in a bronze tower. The tower only had a small
Also, I like the fact that he is half god and half human. I will tell you the story of Perseus from birth to death. A long time ago there was a king named Acrisius. One day he went to the Oracle of Apollo and it told him that he was going to be killed by his grandson, so he locked up his daughter Danae in a tower so that she will not have any children whatsoever.
The story of Perseus is about a son that wants to kill Medusa for a gift to the King because the head of her would be the perfect gift for him. The theme to this story is that even though there will be obstacles to get to what you are seeking if you try hard enough you will get what you want. When Perseus hear that Medusa and the other two can turn anyone that looks at it in to stone, he did not simply give up on the task of getting her head. On his way, he was stopped by Hermes and told to go see the gray women to find the way to the Nymphs of the North, and they were not just going to tell him what he needed to know.
Perseus then flies off to face the Gorgons. Along the way he runs into the goddess Athena, who advises him to only look at the Gorgons through the reflection of his shiny bronze shield, otherwise he'll be turned to stone. Eventually, Perseus reaches the seaside cave of the three Gorgon sisters, whose names are Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa. Luckily for Perseus, the Gorgons are asleep when he gets there. Perseus sneaks up to Medusa, the only Gorgon who is mortal. He raises his sword, taking aim by looking at the monster through the reflection in his shield, and chops off Medusa's head. As Medusa's head flies from her body, Pegasus, the winged horse, and Chysaor, a giant with a golden sword, jump out of her neck. Perseus plops Medusa's head in the kibisis and starts make his getaway. At this point Medusa's sisters, Stheno and Euryale, wake up, and they are not happy. They chase after Perseus. He puts on Hades' helmet of invisibility and escapes. Perseus then flies away with Medusa's head packed in the kibisis. On the way back to the island of Seriphus, Perseus runs into Atlas, the Titan doomed by Zeus to hold up the sky forever. He and the Titan get into a fight, because Atlas refuses to offer Perseus shelter. Perseus ends the argument by whipping out Medusa's head and turning Atlas into stone. When Perseus finally makes it back home to Seriphus, he finds out that his mother is hiding out in a temple trying to avoid king Polydectes. Perseus marches over to Polydectes' palace, where he finds the king hanging out with some friends. When Polydectes asks for the Gorgon head Perseus uses it to turn them to stone After this, Perseus returns all his godly artifacts – winged sandals, kibisis, helmet of invisibility
Hercules is a well known Greek/Roman hero. He is the great hero and son of the great god Zeus. But like all prominent heroes, he had enemies. His most hated enemy is no other than Zeus’ wife, Hera.
