Similarities Between Pericles Funeral Oration And The Gettysburg Address

Worlds apart in terms of length and many other characteristics both Pericles's Funeral Oration, and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address share their similarities. Both nations are Democratic, and both speakers are very proud of that fact, mentioning it in both speeches. Something I noticed was the mentioning of religion. Lincoln mentioned God in his speech, yet Pericles did not mention anything about religion, he kept it purely political. While Pericles had a lengthier speech, Lincoln's speech was short, sweet and right to the point. The entire reason for holding both speeches was to honor the dead. A funeral. Funerals are meant to be beautiful departures of the dead. That’s just what both speeches did, and even said very similar things about the fallen. Both speeches had a similar message about the deceased, and that message was simple: I cannot honor the fallen more than they have honored themselves. Being a leader of a nation, or army is probably one of the greatest honors I can think of, and even these two men put themselves lower than the soldiers that fought bravely. Naturally how this was said in both speeches differs. In Lincoln’s Address it’s much more apparent, as he just says it. In Pericles’s he uses that word play I mentioned before to say this, but not say it exactly. A well written speech has the potential to reach millions, possibly billions. Even if the speaker’s word do not draw out emotions, their message is still being heard. Both speeches message have certainly been heard. More is similar between the two speeches than different. Of course major difference do exist, such as the length of the pieces, or even the mentioning of religion. That is still nothing compared to the similarities both speeches share.
