You may not know who he is, but Pericles was by far one of the greatest leaders in history. Pericles’s methods of handling foreign policy were unusual, but very effective and he was able to save many lives and help his citizens survive. Pericles was firm and unwavering in his method of tackling crime and punishment so that crime was unknown during his rule. Pericles handled social issues very well making drastic changes to the corrupt system of government and replacing it with better ways to lead. Pericles was one of the greatest leaders of his time.

First off, Pericles’s methods of handling foreign policy were unusual, but effective. If Pericles had the choice between war, or peace, he would generally pick war. This is shown to be true because at a certain point during his rule their was two wars at once. This shows that he would rather conquer cities than be at peace with them. He was a very smart and strategic man which allowed him to save many lives on the battlefield. At one point, he saved an entire city using his unique strategy. Pericles overthrew his opponent, Cimon, on the account that he didn’t invade Macedonia when he had the chance to. He disliked Cimon’s method of ruling and was able to overthrow him. This shows that Pericles would like to conquer rivaling empires. During a brief period, Pericles was overthrown but he quickly came back to power. He was overthrown but quickly was reinstated. This shows that while he was disliked by some, they still needed his rule to keep the empire alive. Pericles’s mother’s father, Cleisthenes, was a very harsh tyrant whom Pericles may have looked up to or admired. He may have admired in his grandfather’s glory and taken that to heart.
