Decent Essays

United states produces 13 billion pennies each year. The Penny coin in America played a role to our economy/without people noticing too much. People most likely don’t recognize it due to inflation of prices. To public eyes the penny has always been heated debate topic. Which leads into my paper here. Should the penny be eliminated or kept? The penny should not be eliminated from our “coins system” because the prices would be rounded(making prices mostly going up), the penny has need to stay for economy. And the “public”(average american citizen) view matters and need to be heard. Even the penny kept costing United States to make then it is worth, but the benefits of the penny beats out the cost.

The First reason why the penny should be …show more content…

“ After 2009, the “tails” side of the coin will feature “an image emblematic of the president Lincoln’s preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country,”(Source F). When we look back at history one of the most memorable president is Abraham Lincoln. Abe being on the penny is big deal because our currency carries important people in history. So taking away the penny would be taking away american pride from the citizen in the US. Abe Lincoln impacted was so big, we gave him a coin. That is saying a lot and taking the penny away is very disrespecting to Lincoln. Let's put it into perspective, why don’t we take everyone off the currency, there would be outbreak in the US because those images represent important history to citizens. Plus little bonus the penny is used by everyone and Lincoln’s legacy leaves on. “ For the first time, a U.S. coin depicted a real historical figure rather than the allegorical liberty figure,”(Source F). This was big piece into our future design of coins because they first tried out lincoln on the penny and people enjoy the design. Our currency should have meaning behind each one especially if it's our history. It shows our pride in ancestry. Without Lincoln we would not be the same. “ The remaining 300 million or so that’s 10 million new useless items punched out every day by government workers who could be more usefully employed tracking counterfeiters,”(source C). Producing the penny is job for many americans in the US hired by the government. If you use their time better by tracking counterfeiters, all it does is need for more jobs. Which is good for the US, if we have more people working and collecting weekly paycheck, then US won’t have to worry about Welfare growing(saving money for the US). Plus with people earning more money from jobs, they will spend more and the government makes more money. This is best case scenario for everyone because people get jobs and money while government spends less on welfare and more tax money! Our economy could get out of this debt America is facing because if we can’t deal with it now, then its major problem in the future happening. This helps our present and future get better! Now another reason is citizen want to keep the penny. “ Favor Abolishing The Penny?,”(Source E). Yes, but if you dig deeper into the data, it states that the lower earning class wanted to save the money more because they knew what the penny impact on price. Don’t let that confuse you because every earning class asked, stated penny should be kept. 23% of the people wanted to get rid of it while 59% wanted to keep and 18% not decided.
