Pearl Harbor Research Paper

Pearl Harbor is a naval harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, but on April 7, 1941 it was attacked by Japanese aircraft. First off, you can go to this harbor and see a memorial. Two ships that sunk in the harbor are still there; the USS Arizona, and the USS Utah; both ships were memorialized and are open to the public. Likewise, there are historical fiction books that also give memory to the events of Pearl Harbor. In fact, I’ve read one book called “I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor”; that was written by “Lauren Tarshis”; while some parts focused on events, other parts focused on characters rather than the events.

In 1936 Germany marched into Rhineland and became one of the first leading events of the start of WWII in Europe (Document 1). While these similar attacks went on throughout Europe, the U.S seemed to remain “neutral”; politically this was correct, however while Germany, Japan, and Italy adjoined in becoming the axis powers, the U.S had been clandestinely aiding the united kingdom and other allies prior to the U.S officially entering into the war in 1941. The Pearl Harbor Memorial is a very engaging sight to see. It looks like a big white rectangle that got squashed in the middle. It has windows on both of the sides and windows on the top. When you walk into the memorial you will see a big hole in the floor that allows you to see the sunken USS Arizona which was a massive battleship. The memorial is all white and has a dock next to it were the boats unload people to go and see

The Pearl Harbor Memorials are of great importance because they are a reminder of what happened in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. When people visit these memorials they are seeing where World War II began for the United States. These memorials explain the events that took place when the Japanese Naval Forces bombed Pearl Harbor. In addition, they remind us of how countless American lives were lost on that day. These memorials are of great historical importance to the United States.

When the attack on Pearl Harbor was over, many people died or they suffered critical injuries. Moreover,the attack was a complete surprise to the citizens that live in Fort Island. There was also, “2,008 navy personnel, 109 marines, and 218 army”(visitpearlharbor.org). Additionally, there was “68 civilians” that died with most of them were from the USS Arizona by 1,177 people (visitpearlharbor.org). Not to mention,the amount of people who were injured “came in 1,143” (visitpearlharbor.org). In addition,the “Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor crippled or destroyed nearly 20 American ships” (www.history.com).

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is considered one of Americas greatest defeats on its home soil. A simple search of a database can provide unprecedented amounts of information regarding the devastation and failure of high ranking officials. This information can help build our knowledge of a situation, but history isn’t based on solely simple facts and long summarized accounts of events. Personal accounts provide first-hand accounts that help indulge us into the shoes of those that witnessed them in their triumph and defeat. Pearl Harbor was indeed a massive defeat in the eyes of many Americans during this time period, but what about those that were present?

The relationship between Japan and the United States continued to worsen in September 1940, when Japan signed the Triparte Pact with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Also not helping the tension, in 1941 Japan signed a non-aggression pact with the USSR. With rising tensions President Roosevelt placed an embargo on the sale of petroleum to Japan and by freezing all Japanese assets in the United States.

It started with Japan's plans to build an empire of countries in which they could control completely in the Southeast Asia and the Pacific, but United States, didn't like that and banned all exports to Japan. The United States joining the war brought the most crucial years to follow along with the dropping of the atomic bomb. The attack on Pearl Harbor was the beginning of the a very long war that cost the lives of many people but brought a nation together.
