December 7, 1941, the people of Hawaii woke to a normal day, until the planes came. The first bomb dropped, signifying the United States of America joining the Allies in World War II. This was the first attack on the soil of the United States, and this changed the course of history. Because Pearl Harbor was a monumental historic event, people should learn the plan of attack, the subsequent damages, and the memorials dedicated to this event.
The United States relationship with Japan was already tense; Japan’s attitude towards China was extremely belligerent. The United States and China had been allies, so they helped each other out. 2,403 people were dead and over 1,000 injured, both soldiers and civilians and all of the airfields and docks were demolished. About 20 American warships were damaged or destroyed and more than 300 airplanes were obliterated. There were many famous ships which have been remembered, such as the USS Oklahoma, USS Arizona, USS West Virginia, USS Utah, USS Maryland, USS Pennsylvania, USS Tennessee, and USS Nevada. All of these ships were salvaged and repaired except for the USS Arizona and USS Utah. The United States was furious at the Japanese. The president at the time, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made an impactful speech. “Yesterday, December 7, 1941-a date which will live in infamy- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” This speech impacted American’s all over the United States, and they started to rise up and protect their country. One of the most famous ones was the USS Arizona. The monument is found in Honolulu, Hawaii. The massive ships was downed by a 1,760 pound bomb, along with smaller bombs. One of the bombs pierced the fuel tank, leaving a thin, glass like film over the top of the ocean where the ship is. The black droplets of oil are referred to as Pearl Harbor’s “black tears.” Many of the Pearl Harbor veterans alive today go to the memorial to share their experience with Pearl Harbor. That may be the most famous monument, but it’s not the only one. The Pacific Aviation museum feature a variety of different types of planes. This museum is also located in Honolulu, Hawaii, and opened December 2006. The museum occupies two authentic World War II hangars, and some of the planes featured are the B-23’s, a Japanese Zero, a Stearman N2S-3, a Cobra attack helicopter, a Soviet-designed MiG-15 and MiG Alley Exhibit, an F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, P-40 Warhawk, "Flying Tigers" Exhibit, and more.
