Date of Infamy Pearl Harbor and 9/11, two days that will live in infamy forever. Two different
days and two different attacks by different kinds of people; but they have more in common
than you think. The attacks on 9/11 compare to those on Pearl Harbor because they both caused
severe damage and killed thousands of innocent people. Both Pearl Harbor and 9/11 killed
thousands of innocent people, and not just in the U.S. After both attacks, both of the Presidents
at that time gave a speech that inspired the nation. The outcomes of both attacks not only cost
thousands of dollars of damage, but they also caused the U.S to declare war on two different
countries. In the end, both attacks caused a chain reaction of events that

said that the U.S was trying to make peace with Japan and that the Japanese ambassador sent
the secretary of state a formal reply saying that that it was useless to continue with any
negotiations made with the U.S. After the attacks on 9/11 President George Walker Bush (43rd
President from 2001-2009) gave a speech addressing the attacks on The World Trade Center
and The Pentagon. Bush said that the attacks were deliberate and were meant to terrorize the
U.S. He also said that he had all intelligence and law communities trying to find the people
responsible for the terrorist attacks. While Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a more factual speech,
Bush went for a more emotional speech using a quote from the Bible (Psalm 23). ‘Tonight, I
ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been
shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened.’ This quote from
his speech suggests that he wanted to address the tragedy and reassure the U.S
Some similarities between pearl harbor and 9/11 are that the attacks were unprovoked attacks without benefit of declaration of war on u.s. Soil. Another similarity is that the public's opinion was galvanized in the aftermath of the attacks. Also this drew presidential speeches which drew public support for action
The speech took place on September 20th which is nine days after the attack occurred. There are several reasons that Bush waited nine days before presenting the speech, but having nine days to prepare for a speech of this magnitude is hardly any time at all. When he addressed the nation the night of the attack the speech must have been much easier to prepare for due to the fact that there is not yet a plan in place. When addressing congress a plan needs to be in place and it needs to be said efficiently. There was a clear objective in the message Bush was trying to convey to congress,
Unlike 9/11, Pearl Harbor was quick lasting only 11 minutes plus the bombing. The reason for the attack was for the Japanese to defeat our Navy so that we wouldn’t slow their land takeover plan down. The Japanese attack caught us off guard , but we still ended up fighting and putting our best efforts forward. The Japanese started their attack with bombing our resources (air force base). Then the Japanese bombed our naval fleet. This was the most devastating. 9/11 on the other hand was a pure act of terror. On September 11th 4 planes were hijacked in the air. While 2 planes went to Manhattan to take down the twin towers the other 2 went to our nation’s capital to wreak havoc. Thankfully only 3 of the 4 planes went on with their plans. The last plane did not make it to the Pentagon (it’s original target). Fearlessly the passengers of the last plane broke into action and sacrificed their life to save the lives of those in the pentagon. Forever we are thankful. Even though these two attacks were fairly different, they show great strength and heroism from the americans who acted
The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in a total loss of 2,335 U.S. servicemen. A total number of serviceman killed was and 1,143 were wounded, a total of sixty-eight civilians were also killed as well thirty-five ,were wounded in the attack that day in december of 1941.A total of 2,343 men were killed, a total of 1,272 were wounded and 960 people remain missing. Due to the attack on the world trade center in 2001, 2,996 people were killed 18 people were rescued alive from the rubble. Only 1,600 people were identified out of the 2,749 that were present at the time that the twin towers collapsed. First I’ll be discussing the similarities between these two horrific tragedies. I recently found out that both Pearl Harbor and 9/11 could have been avoided. A month before the terrorist attack
2,966 people died on September 11th, 2001. When a man named Osama Bin Laden launched a terrorist attack on the United States of America. Four planes were hijacked and crashed into the Twin Towers, The Pentagon, and the last was thought to be heading toward the White House. But the courageous men and women on the plane stopped them, and crash landed in a field in Pennsylvania. Here, you will here about Nikki Goughnour, she was 24 on 9/11. And she remembers that she was at home, sleeping, when her husband woke her up and told her that the USA was under attack.
He uses phrases such as, “Righteous might,” and “unprovoked and dastardly act,” to help make his audience feel something towards the bombing and therefore making them connected to what happened. Throughout his entire speech he uses vivid, emotional phrases for example “deliberately planned,” “suddenly and deliberately attacked,” and “this form of treachery. When he uses these phrases to get congress to feel that the attack was unjustified and that they should declare war on Japan. He also appeals to the logic of what has happened within the speech. He lists the other islands that Japan also attacked as a reason why they should take action against Japan. When he says, “There is no blinking at the blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interest are in grave danger,” he creates an obvious need to attack Japan in order to protect our country from other attacks. He also points out how the United States was in contact with Japan in the hours after the attack began and no hint of aggression was given. Another example is when he said “It will be recorded that the distance between Hawaii and Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
Despite the several terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, America remained strong and united. In the speech “Address to the Nation on the Terrorist Attacks”, George W. Bush, addresses the terrorist attack of September eleventh to let the citizens know they can overcome a tragic and mournful incident by remaining unified and a powerful country. The primary audience are the citizens and the family members of the ones who had died or were involved in the incident. The secondary audience are the terrorists to let them know American’s are not scared and will stand together against them. Bush uses ethos, pathos, and figurative language to encourage the citizens to be stronger, united, and feel safe.
Bush consistently employs several rhetorical strategies in order to establish his credibility throughout his address. The primary way that Bush establishes this credibility is by using his speech to
Two terrorist attacks, both at different times, and both unexpected occurred. One being before the 1960’s and the other after. In the early
The leader of this nation has numerous important speeches throughout their term to assure the public of its safety and its promise to lead this country to new heights. As time has past many inspiring speeches have been delivered from presidents that have change the culture we live in, and developed the ever changing society. Thus, when tragedy strikes the president answers to the public with remorse, but with the sense of inspiring the people that we are all in this together as one nation. Therefore, in President Obama`s speech on the Boston Marathon Bombing he speaks and uses words that make Americans feel safe, and reaches our hearts with making everyone feel that we can bounce back from any adversity thrown at Americans. Thus, with his careful
September 11, 2001, four commercial airliners hijacked by unknown terrorists and took the cockpit. Two hit the twin towers, one hit the Pentagon and another one was forcefully crashed into a field by brave passengers that retook the cockpit from the hijackers, no one survived. 2,752 people died that day. President George W. Bush announced to the people days later a muslim group that called themselves al qaeda took responsibility for the attack and are located in the Afghanistan in and that Saddam Hussein in Iraq was helping this group and making weapons of mass destruction (WMD's), that were a threat to national security. Multiple searches were conducted by the United Nations that came up inclusive about Iraq having WMD’s. But Bush, still determined to invade Iraq, declares war on March 20th. The United States, under President George W. Bush, made a terrible mistake
In “Pearl Harbor.” it’s important that you know on Sunday, December 7th, 1941 there was an attack from Japan on the Pearl Harbor. Which was one of the most devastating attacks in U.S. history on the military. This is also known as one of the most tragic days in U.S. history. “The attack ends after about two hours. When it’s over, twenty-one U.S. ships have been sunk or badly damaged. The Japanese have destroyed 188 U.S. planes at nearby airfields. This took place December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor.
Since the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, approximately 330 terrorist attacks have occurred on American soil. The number includes successful and failed attacks from President Lincoln’s assassination until a New York incident with a van running down pedestrians on October 31, 2017. The results also exclude attacks deemed “criminal incidents” and accidents. Of course, not all of the attacks were at the same magnitude of the four coordinated attacks on September 11, 2001. Also, those behind the attacks vary greatly in ethnicity, religion, and background. For example, on August 12, 2017, during a protest by left-wing activists, in the constant debate between left- and right-wing protestors, a vehicle mowed
The events that took place in America on September 11, 2001 will have a lasting wound on this country forever. President George W. Bush’s speech, “A Great People Has Been Moved to Defend a Great Nation”, gave America something to have hope in. Bush was a republican president and was the 43rd of the United States and was a very passionate man. Although Bush had to make some tough decisions that very day, he was a president that made a lasting impact on America. Throughout Bush’s speech, he effectively covered pathos, ethos, and logos.
These aggressions (also referred to as 9/11) were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda. It was the deadliest day in history for New York City firefighters as 343 were killed. The attacks killed 2,997 people, injured over 6,000 others, and caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure damage totaling at $3 trillion. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror and invading Afghanistan to remove the Taliban, which had harbored al-Qaeda.
