Paul releases himself from the chains of his fear and has found the shining light that will lead him to greatness. For the longest time, Erik has controlled Paul with fear, chaining Paul’s emotions to the ground. Saying the truth was a simple statement. But that one simple statement has created a big difference in the community.On page 269, Antoine Thomas tells Paul, “The truth shall set you free”. All this time, Erik has told lies. All this time Erik has been holding the truth captive. After everything that has happened, Paul finally makes the statement.
The truth has been held captive all this time by Eriks fear. The Lake Windsor All-Star, with his true fan cheering him on, his Dad. On page 211, Arthur swings a blackjack at Luis’ head and you can just hear a loud whack against the side of Luis’ head. After that, Erik adds a little remark, “Arthur does all my light work”. Even though Paul witnesses all of this, he does nothing because he still fears Erik. Paul is still the antelope that fears the lion, Erik. But by the time you get to page 284, everything has changed. On page 284 the text states, “I saw-I heard Erik Fisher tell him to do that”. After all this time, Erik has kept the truth captive. But now, Paul finally releases the truth. He finally releases himself from those chains of fear. He has finally released the shining light that is the truth.

Lake Windsor has been blaming Tangerine for stealing the koi from the pond and smashing the mailboxes. Paul’s flashback of Erik smashing mailboxes with a bat has helped Paul unveil the truth. Seeing the truth is all Paul has for him. He knows the truth and is ready to release it. On page 284, the text states, “The weapon that he used to kill Luis Cruz was a blackjack.” This shows that Paul had known the truth for so long, but never had the guts to tell it. Paul knows so many things, but he’s just not ready to let it
I held my hands out, as he had done, and said, ‘I’m not afraid of you Erik. come on.’ ” Another quote on page two hundred and fifty-nine is, “All I remember is Mom shouting ‘Paul!’ as I took off, flying through the air. I landed hard on Coach Warner’s back and held on tight, riding his neck and shoulders.” In both quotes, Paul did one thing in common, which is overcoming a fear. In the first quote, Paul overcame his fear by standing up to Erik who he usually feared. In the second quote, Paul overcame his fear by helping his friends out, regardless if he got in trouble. Characterization goes with the book because throughout the novel, Paul has been afraid of many things but he is trying to overcome those fears. Paul’s parents and Erik create many problems for Paul, and it makes it difficult for him to uncover his true self. Paul’s parents don’t pay attention to what Erik truly is, but are also absorbed in his high school football career. Dad said,” You’re saying that I know everything about Erik’s season and nothing about yours. Your right, and I’m sorry.” (Bloor pg.234) But Erik also creates problems

Paul has constructed more self confidence to speak the truth compared to his antecedent self. When Paul first meets Tino, Victor and Hernando, on page 108 he states “My stomach started to knot again.” This reveals that Paul is obviously terrified of them because he's the reason for their suspension. In Paul’s mind, if he tells the truth they will tear him apart in millions of pieces, which makes Paul refuse to speak the truth. Later, Paul finally had the courage to admit that he was the one who ratted them out, however Tino reacted surprisingly calm about it. As he experiences different events, Paul begins revealing more of himself in his eyes. At first, because of his eyesight, he sees himself in a very negative light, “I could stop trying to be what everyone else and and accept being a freak.”(76) Paul’s view in the beginning, like everyone else’s in this story, is clouded. His view of himself affects his confidence and how timid he acts. As the story continues, he sees everything in a new light, “I feel like Luis is part of me now. I feel like a different person.”(252) Seeing this brave and new self, Paul sees the the world as a much brighter, clearer place. Antoine Thomas helps Paul find his voice by telling him the truth and information that will boost his confidence and help him to tell the truth and stand up to Erik. Antoine Thomas helps Paul find his voice when Paul is outside of Betty Brights house and Betty bright and Antoine Thomas walk out. Antoine and Paul start having a conversation when Antoine says “ You’ve got to start saying the truth little brother” (Bloor 269) Paul nodded his head like he understands but he doesn't have a conviction until Antoine says”Don’t spend you life hiding under the bleachers. The truth shall set you free.”
Paul always had a feeling that he was being lied to but could never remember the truth. He can see things in ways that others can’t and don’t understand. He is able to put the puzzle pieces together even without amazing sight. He can see beyond sight and can see reality. The lies are like an eclipse when it’s covering the sun. Eventually the eclipse ends and the truth comes out, but the truth is bright enough for even him to see. Every bad thing that happens is swept under the rug and pushed aside. Behind Paul’s awkward goggles, bad eyesight, and low self esteem, there is a tough, confident boy who has finally found his identity and can be the star of his own

Paul has made a variety of decisions that altered his life in many unsuspected ways. All of these choices gave Paul determination to stand up to the domineering people in his life. For instance, Joey called Paul to advise him that the police were in front of Arthur's house looking for Arthur. Joey then asked if he could inform the police that Arthur was at Paul's house to which Paul said yes.
On page 63 Paul is being told he’s off the team and Paul cries instead of doing anything to make him stay on the team (Bloor 63). This shows that Paul wasn’t brave enough to go ask another teacher to prove he could stay. Lastly, Paul was a coward. On page 86, it says “I’m still afraid of Erik”. This shows that Paul is afraid of Erik and is scared of what he might do.
