The book starts off like any other, introducing and describing the main characters, in this case Santiago is the first to share the interest of peers reading the story. He is said to be a small town shepherd boy who will do anything for his flock of sheep. In the opening scene of the story, Santiago takes his flock to an abandoned church and lies down under a sycamore tree hoping to get some rest. He is soon woken up from a disturbing dream which foreshadows further into the story of his own Personal Legend. Later in the book, Santiago is faced with multiple tests to be successful in finding his treasure. “Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure” (Coelho 15). Paulo continues to add characters in the book that help Santiago throughout his journey.
At last Santiago caught a glimpse of the pyramids and he knew his relentless pursuit to find the treasure was near, Santiago’s legs felt like jelly and he was drenched in sweat. He lifted his chin and dragged his feet with determination in the direction of the nearest pyramid, pushing himself forward with his trustworthy staff that he always carried with him. His feet sliding in the sand made his walk even more treacherous and difficult. When he reached the base of the pyramid he climbed up and found himself a good spot to start digging, recalling his dream for clues on its location. When he was digging in the almost dark sky with his bare hands and fingers he spotted three strangers wearing Arab clothing and dark scarf’s around their faces.
The Alchemist is about a young shepherd named Santiago who travels from Spain to Egypt to find his destiny, or treasure, near the pyramids. Along the way, he meets four people, a merchant, a king, an Englishman and an alchemist, who all points Santiago to where he needs to go. But no one knows what is in the treasure. He learns different lessons from each person yet he doesn't realize what he is looking for is the lesson itself. He also has to decide if he wants to continue the journey because he came across encounters along the way before moving on to the next person.

Santiago receives it while sleeping during a normal, peaceful day in his homeland, Andalucia. In his case, he undergoes an extraneous dream in which a child transports him to the eminent Egypt. In the book " The Alchemist" Paulo Coelho talks about Santiago, a shepherd boy who travel around the world with his flock of sheep to discover new things. Santiago had a same dream but occur different day that there is a boy who tells him that he will discover the treasure if he travels to the Egyptian pyramids. As his journey went on, Santiago meet an old fortune seeker woman who read his palm and tells him that he must follow his dream and in order to find that treasure with her help. He must make a promise to her that he will give her one third of his treasure when he success. He is unsure about what the woman told him is truth, and he is not so sure about Egyptian pyramids actually existed.
Through the novel, Santiago is finding the treasure within himself and searching for the actual treasure. While both of the characters must find divergent treasures, in their own way, they both find it in the end. After the characters find their treasure, what makes truly makes them content, they begin to grow and understand concepts they have never understood before. For example, in the beginning Santiago does not understand why the baker is slaving away in his bakery and postponing his trip, but later on in the story, he too works at the glass store in order to have money for his trip. For each of them, it was eye opening. They finally have to the chance to slow down, and stop looking for their treasure and carrying the burden of guilt from their past, and are able to look back and reflect. As a matter of fact, the key point in their individual journeys is when they discover their true selves along the way.
Alchemist is already explained in the story as it is the ability to purify your soul, listen to your heart and speak the language of the world. The title is, then, to show us, the readers, that anyone can achieve his/her dream by possessing the characteristics of alchemist as exactly as the shepherd boy, Santiago.
The Alchemist is an extraordinary book that reveals some of the secrets of the world we live in. It is a kind of story that makes realize that they need to work toward pursuing their Personal Legend. The determination of Santiago in the story urges me to follow and accomplish my Personal Legend as early as I can. The way the author portrayed the book, made me get lost in the book. The Alchemist depicts the good and evil of the world like the many people helping Santiago reach his dream and like thieves stealing all the gold and money from Santiago.
