The history of graphic design, is filled with many different respected individuals. These individuals helped shape and evolve graphic design. Paul Rand is one such graphic designer, who helped change the art of graphic design. Paul Rand was born in 1914 in Brooklyn, New York. Rand attended the Pratt Institute in Manhattan. Rand was a very well know advertising artist by his early 20’s. Many of his best works in advertising came after World War II. Rand would turn to European advertisements, as an inspiration for his own pieces. Paul Rand was known for his contributions to page design, his advertisement pieces, and his creation of various corporate logos.

Throughout his career, Rand created advertising posters and pages within various magazines. As discussed in the previous paragraph, Rand utilized Swiss style in many of his works. In addition to Swiss style, Rand was considered to be a “Modernist”. This was to say that Rand would attempt to break traditional aspects of design and advertising, in order to create something new for the audience. This is considered to be one of the most important aspects of Rand and his works. In Kyle Vanhemert’s article; Paul Rand, The Visionary Who Showed Us That Design Matters, the importance of his modernist creativity is discussed. In the article it states, “As one of his contemporaries later put it, Rand “brought ideas and intelligence to advertising where before him there was no semblance of thought” (Vanhemert 2). A great example of Paul Rand’s modernist designs, would be his 1946 Jacqueline Cochran Cosmetics Ad. In this ad we see the use of Swiss style in a way that had no been previously done in …show more content…
Rand would use his unique design styles to create corporate logos, that are still used today. In Anne Quito’s article, How to design an enduring logo: Lessons from IBM and Paul Rand, the concept of how Rand created the corporate logo for IBM is discussed. According to Quito, “To improve the mark’s legibility, he replaced the font Beton with a similar but stronger-looking typeface called City. Rand tooled with the shape of the letterforms too, he lengthened the serifs and made the stacked squares in the letter “B” larger” (Quito 3). The IBM logo was one of Rand’s best known corporate logos. This logo was simple enough to fit onto any product or advertisement, in way that would grab the consumer’s attention. The idea of the logo was to create a simple logo, that would be link the products to the logo. Rand’s works in corporate logos, changed this aspect of commercial identity. Companies today still seek to create logos that are simple, yet link the company to the logo. According to Quito, in creating these logos, Rand “was able to stretch the client’s imagination beyond the page” (Quito
While attending Liberty Univeristy, I started out as a Business Major, but after a few accounting classes I decided to be an Accountant. The story of Sam Ferris, an eleven year old boy who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is “a life threatening cancer that affects the nervous system (Make-A-Wish 2012).” Sam always has this passion for baseball and his wish was for a baseball field to be built in his backyard, which would allow him to play with his friends whenever he wanted. Make-A-Wish knew that this was his one true wish, so they asked help from volunteers and donors to make his wish come true. The University of Mississippi and Itawamba Community College’s ground crew decided that they would contribute to building the baseball field. Those in the community generously donated the materials needed to build the baseball field such as “fencing, backstop, sod, clay,
I like how Paul Rand’s logos looks and its style in the geometric form because his logo, ABC is consists of the three lowercase letters, with white text on the black background. Those letters are stand for American Broadcasting Company and he designed the typeface of ABC in simple and unique style, which I believe that this typeface was considered to be an inspiration of the Bauhaus school in Germany. Also I like his second logo, NeXT because of its simplicity. This logo contains different colors for each letter in two columns, on a black box. Each squares has a little white spaces between them.
There have been many people who have served and occupied a CA state senate seat over the years who have had a huge impact on California government and one of those people is Michael Rubio. After high school Michael when on to attend Bakersfield College for a couple of years and then transferred out to the University of New Haven, where he had the opportunity to study Criminology and through all his hard work graduated with honors. Robert Davis was an African American man. He was not a “thug,” he was not a “drunk,” he was a retired school teacher from New Orleans who was in his sixties. He was brutally attacked by three police officers. He suffered a broken nose and other broken bones in his face. The incident was recorded and went viral. Davis was arrested but faced no charges. Three police officers were charged but only two went to trial. In the end, two of the police officers were fired — the third never made it to trial because he had committed suicide. Davis was compensated for the assault.
The south for a good while was always fond of using slavery as a cheap source of work. The increase in the number of slaves was when John Rolfe became one of the first to cultivate tobacco in the so called “New World back then in the 17th century. There was good money to be made about the amount of labor that went into the tobacco cultivation was harch, hence why slaves were used. Ever since then, it is obvious to note that slaves dominated the aspect of southern life. Whether that be economically, socially or politically, slaves played an important role in each category.
Destitute, rejected, and alone Robert Johnson seems to be in complete despair when singing “Crossroad Blues.” Robert is acknowledged as “The King of Delta Blues.” Born in Mississippi and known as a dirt poor African-American boy. (Robert Johnson Blues Foundation) he was recognized for his great lyrics, guitar playing and upmost contribution to artists. Robert’s songs and lyrics still live on today in artists such as; The Rolling Stones, that recorded “Love in Vain” and Stop Breaking Down, Cream, who recorded “Cross Road Blue” (renamed Crossroad), Fleetwoord Mac who recorded “Hellhound on my Trail.” (Charlton 7) Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers, also great entertainers, recorded his songs (Robert Johnson Blues Foundation).
In the second half of the nineteenth century trade unionism became much more recognized by governments. The government recognized that it is the right of workers to organize. This fundamental common law principle became a freedom of contract or the concept that people should be free to make bargains with each other and that the law should enforce such contracts if necessary. This became legalized in the year 1871 and by the year 1875 picketing also became legal. By the year 1884 these unions became legalized by France’s Third Republic and also in Germany in 1890. These unions became corporations able to own property and to sue and be sued. This enabled these unions
In the movie “Dead Poets Society” they showed examples that appeal using logos. To start, they said “words and ideas can change the world”. This is shown when everyone finds out about the Dead Poets Society .The principal and the parents thought it was insane, but the students thought it was so cool because the idea that the members in the Dead Poets Society were so different than everyone else the adults were terrified because they didn’t know what to do.The idea of them being different than the other students was unacceptable to the adults so they changed the rules and the fired Mr.keating so that they couldn’t be different. To conclude, one idea can change a lot for themselves or the people around them.
Logos can be recognized in Steve Jobs’ Commencement Speech when he used logic to convince the audience. Logically speaking about death, Steve Jobs convinced the audience to spend their time wisely because they will not live forever. After speaking about when he was told he had an incurable form of cancer and then later found out it was actually a rare cancer that was curable, Jobs said, “Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.” Jobs had been in a place where he thought he was going to face death, and it gave him a greater understanding
Paul Rand is known as one of the most influential and finest American graphic designer of the twentieth century. He is known for his art work predominantly for design, graphic design and typography. Paul Rand was born in August 15, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York with the name Peretz Rosenbaum. Rand was known as “self- taught designer”, he learned about works of Cassandre and Moholy-Nagy from European magazines. His esteemed contribution to the design form is acknowledged by many critics and is amazingly extraordinary. However, corporate identity design was the area during his peak design career that gave him global recognition. He is looked upon as one of the genius who essentially established standards for the conception of logos for the
One example is when he states, “TiVo's a commercial failure... when they went IPO, their stock was at about 30 or 40 dollars and then plummeted, and it's never traded above 10 (Sinek).” In this example he is explaining that TiVo was a commercial failure, even though it had good market conditions, to prove to the audience that success isn’t just about the market. He uses the company's stock market history as evidence, showing the audience that this statement is not just opinion, it’s fact, effectively convincing the audience that TiVo was a failure and proving his point. To conclude, logos is a key tool in showing an audience that your claim isn’t just opinion. But, without credibility, the audience may begin to question the accuracy of the data
Currently I am taking the World Region course on-line and learning the courses from Professor John Boyer via on-line video lectures almost on a daily basis; however, I haven’t never met him in person so I was enthusiastic as soon as I saw his email invite about his live lecture on Thursday, October 13th, 2016, at MCB 100, from 6:00-7:30 PM. I immediately added it to my calendar and contacted my good friend, Jing, about attending this great event with me. Jing and I came to MCB 100 at 6:45PM, fifteen minutes before the lecture started so that we could sit in the front row. As we settled down to our seats, we heard loud cheers from the lecture hall as Professor Boyer walked in. The whole atmosphere felt like we were in the rock concert.
Courage shows strength, and a willingness to do what is right even though it may be hard. Although Harper Lee would define courage as taking one for the team and helping each other to get it done quicker. In TKM ways of courage are shown to demonstrate her meaning. I have chosen three examples of courage to explain from TKM“Atticus's hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder” (Lee 127). In chapter ten, Tom Johnson was on the loose. Tom Johnson is a dog but this this it was the dog we all wanted to see. As everyone saw him coming down the street his look shaky and out of place. He had rabies. Now most would just avoid the dog but in the story they can’t because, they don’t have medicine to cure people if they get
Think of it this way. How difficult is it to recall the 4-digit PIN for your debit card? How about your bank's routing number?
