In America being a member of a class is comparable to being an animal confined to an enclosure at the Zoo. Even the high-class Lion is limited in his freedom and mobility. The low class and slow moving turtle will have difficulty ever climbing a social ladder. All the animals at the Zoo are like all the people in society that are separated by class. I have chosen to escape my cage and fly in any direction I see fit. Paul Fussell’s Class can clearly illustrate what it means to be labeled in a class society. I don’t feel that I am restricted to fall into those categories or labels that Fussell dictates in his book for class status codes. Frankly, I could care less what society thinks of me and my matriculation through college is solely based on the fact that I want to do more with my life. This became clear when we purchased a nice house in the valley. We lived there for several years but along the way we faced many hardships that took a toll on my mother. My youngest brother got sick and had to have a kidney removed at 2 years old. At 5 years old he battled a very rare and life-threatening disease called Kawasaki (like the motorcycle.) The only doctors that could treat him were located at Cedar-Sinai. He is in the medical books for having survived the longest case recorded in history for this disease. It turned out that his stay at the hospital and treatment were a lot more expensive than we could have imagined. We could no longer afford our nice house and ended up moving into an apartment again. Eventually, the inconsiderate, alcoholic stepfather of mine messed up big time. I had to grow up and be a man at 12 years old and help my mom remove him from the house. He would continue to be in our lives for the sake of my youngest
