Paul Allen: A Biography
Paul Allen, alongside Bill Gates, is one of Washington’s biggest billionaires. made known by Microsoft, Paul has gone on to become skilled in managing and owns several sports teams and companies. Unfortunately, not as many people know of him as much as his partner, Gates, is known, because he didn’t take as much credit. Understanding his philanthropic efforts and contributions to science is just as important as Gate’s. Paul Allen is no wallflower, in fact he is quite the opposite.
Allen was born in the city of Seattle, Washington state, to his parents Kenneth Sam Allen and Edna Faye on the 21st of January, 1953 (“Paul Allen” Wikipedia). Both Allen’s parents were librarians, as well as patrons of science and the arts. They made sure to foster curiosity

In 1975, Allen and Gates started marketing a BASIC programming language translator with their newly founded company Microsoft (“Paul Allen” Famous entrepreneurs). Soon, through deals with other emerging companies such as Apple and Commodore, Allen had arranged for their company to purchase an operating system called Q-DOS for $50,000 (“Paul Allen” Biography). The duo reinvented the operating system and renamed it MS-DOS the gave exclusive rights of MS-DOS to a personal computer company called IBM, who had originally commissioned the OS.
Their OS, running on IBM PC’s which quickly dominated the market, launched them both into billionaire status almost overnight (Biography). Unfortunately, shortly after their success, Allen was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1982, and was forced to undergo months of radiation therapy (Wikipedia). Because of this, Allen began to distance himself from their company, and ultimately resigned in 1983 (Biography). Interestingly, Allen still consults as a senior strategy advisor and reportedly still owns approximately 100 million shares of the company

Ethan Allen was born on January 21, 1738 in Litchfield, Connecticut. He was the first out of eight kids. His parents were Joseph and Mary Allen. There were Ira, Levi, Linda, Herber, Herman, Zimri, Lucy, and finally Ethan Allen. Only five of the kids were born with the actually parents. Mary Allen died in 1783 and Allen remarried in 1784 to Fanny who then had three more children.

Sterling Allen Brown was born on May 1, 1901 in Washington, DC. He is the sixth child of Adelaide Allen and her husband Sterling Nelson Brown. While working, he picked up basic computer skills. So he was self taught since he was never exposed to computers during his childhood, unlike Bill Gates. He later went on to making the his database management system for the CIA with two of his colleagues from Amdahl Corporation.
