Historic movies are often produced with the premise that they will tell an honest tale about the past, but how accurate are they really? The Patriot is a historical movie the shows the life of an ex-war hero, Benjamin Martin, and his life continuing on through the American Revolution. This includes his interaction with the soldiers and generals, his political stance, and his involvement through the towns. Because the Benjamin Martin is fictional The Patriot cannot be called 100% accurate, but that doesn't mean that other aspects shown were inaccurate. The Patriot demonstrates authentic knowledge of history militarily, socially, and politically.
To start with, the military aspect of the movie was accurate in its treatment of slaves, and the depicted actions of soldiers. The Patriot was correct in showing that both sides committed war atrocities. The colonists when they were shown killing surrendering British soldiers, and the British when they burned people alive in the church. In the article by Slate, it states that both the British and Americans did commit war crimes by killing those who surrendered, but there was no mention of any general locking civilians in a church and burning it. Another way The Patriot was correct, was in the way it depicted the treatment of slaves. The movie shows one slave being forcibly enlisted by his master. Later, he learns of the freedom and payment he may earn shall he continue to serve in the Continental Army. At the end of the movie it
Imagination is built on history that passes down from generation to generation. Whether it’s written, shared verbally, or physically present. But are those stories really true? How do the people of this world know what is true based on a written textbook or a person’s voice describing the events that happened prior to the newer generation? Just like the confusion in what is true or not, there is confusion in whether the American Revolution was in fact revolutionary. This was also known as, the War for Independence. It was between the British 13 colonies and England, which at the time was the most powerful country in the world, but was short lived when the 13 colonies took victory in between 1775 and 1783. They are now known
In their book A Patriot’s History of the United States, Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen seem to generally believe in the superiority of Europeans to the rest of the world. Schweikart and Allen go out of their way to note the superiority of European fighting patterns, the virtuous motivations of Christian explorers, the justification of genocide, and even the selflessness of the Founding Fathers. Though not completely inaccurate, the bias in favor of the colonists leaves many perspectives completely out of the picture.
The movie, The Patriot, is the story of a South Carolina plantation owner, Benjamin Martin, who leads a local militia against British troops in the South during the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Martin, who is a widower with six children and a veteran of the French and Indian War, wants nothing to do with the war until a brutal British Colonel, William Tavington, kills one of his sons and takes his eldest son, a member of the Continental Army, prisoner. Martin, who’s character is loosely based on Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, uses guerrilla warfare to cut British supply lines and attack outposts in an attempt to slow General
The Patriot The movie, The Patriot, was released in the year 2000. It is a drama/action film that relates to the American Revolutionary War. Although the plot of the movie is fictional there are many aspects that relate to what happened in the war, but some have discrepancies. The Patriot is the story of a South Carolina plantation owner, Benjamin Martin, who is played by Mel Gibson. It is more a story of a family during the war then the war itself.
The Patriot. A person who is willing to fight for their country against enemies. The Patriot begins in the year 1776 in the colony of South Carolina. Mel Gibson plays a planation farmer who fought in the French-Indian war named Benjamin Martin. A War was about to begin and Benjamin wanted no share partaking in the soon-to-be American Revolutionary War. He was more concerned about his two eldest sons who wanted to fight under General George Washington. The beginning of the movie starts out with Benjamin Martin peacefully living with his kids whom no longer have a living mother. Benjamin’s oldest son, Gabriel, joins the war without permission from his father. As the rest of the family are at home one afternoon, Colonel William Travington burns the Martin Plantation to the ground and his second oldest son was killed immediately for interrupting Travington’s plan. Benjamin finds a way to seek revenge because of the rage he experiences after his family is hurt. He begins to realize that he needs to fight for his children and he will not do it alone. Both Benjamin and his oldest son, Gabriel, decide to join the militia as a way of showing what they are capable of. Throughout the film, Benjamin Martin becomes a soldier whom others respect and admire. He shows the militia what it means to truly care for not only his men, but also for his family. As the film progresses, a turn of events take place that show Benjamin’s continued want of revenge against General Charles Cornwallis. The Continentals and the militia soon commence the battle at Cowpens. This is when Benjamin Martin meets his enemy, Travington, who murdered his two eldest sons. After a drawn-out battle, Benjamin stabs Travington in the neck and kills him for the sake of his children. It is then that General Cornwallis retreats his forces and the rest celebrate. Even though some portions of The Patriot aren’t as accurate as we perceive, it is a film full of war and despair, but also a film that contributes to the importance of dignity and the love for one’s family.
My opinion may be different than yours but here it is . Overall in the movie , scenes / events did occur that similarly happened in history and on the other hand other events were not historically accurate. If you didn’t know already the movie the Patriot is based on a character Benjamin Martin who is an unassuming man who is forced to join the American revolutionary war after his son Thomas is killed. Benjamin was tasked with keeping the Lord Cornwallis's regiments pinned south through guerilla warfare.
They were also very organized in battle as shown in the movie, and that's why they didn't know how to deal with militia men. However, the brutality wasn't as much as shown in some parts of the movie. It is done to show the evilness of the British and so when the patriots killed any British, it seemed that they are taking revenge and so the brutal actions of the patriots were acceptable. In one scene, the British regulars order the execution of a colonial soldier captured in uniform. In fact, such war crimes by regular troops rarely happened. In the most incongruous scene, the people of the entire town are locked in a church which is then set on fire. It is very hard to believe that any British soldier would actually burn a church, because mostly everyone at that particular time was either Puritanical or Catholic. To desecrate such a sacred ground would be tantamount to sin; something that a British general would never order, nor would his soldiers follow, even if the order was given. As historian Thomas Fleming puts it: 'Of course it never happened. If it had, do you think Americans would have forgotten it? It could have kept us out of World War I' (Online). The events that people were exposed to in the film, were extremely violent, not to mention, only one side of the story is given.
12). With violence comes fear and that is what they instilled in the hearts of the Britain’s and their loyalists who lived in the colonies. For example, in April, 1765, the Governor of New York expected to get a shipment of paper goods. Once the Governor found out that the Sons of Liberty knew about the shipment he locked himself inside Fort George because he was scared for his life. The Governor had every right to be scared, seeming as though the Sons of Liberty arrived at his house after he received his package and proceeded to burn his transportation. The angry mob then set their sights on a commander at Fort George and began to loot and vandalize his house. They did all of that destruction in the name of what? “Patriotism”? I think not. The Sons of Liberty were murderous bullies who tarred and feathered people who were loyal to Britain, the act of tarring someone is terroristic enough. A patriot fights for what they believe in yes, but not to the extent of killing people before they exhausted all peaceful options. The Sons of Liberty even had, “cooperation with undisciplined and extralegal groups to set off violent actions” (Kramer par. 15). I mean, come on! They used outside help to instill fear so they could get their point
Movies are a brilliant way to immerse yourself into a wonderful story, full of well-developed, interesting (well, there have been some exceptions) characters. People in the film industry work hard to come up with a plot line that can draw in many viewers. There are not only movies that are created as a work of fantasy, but also ones that are inspired by real events that has transpired. Many have been based on historical events that we learned in history class. Yes, a movie might be able to teach you a thing or two about the past. What better way to learn history, right? Unfortunately, the ones making the film don’t always portray the most accurate of content relating to history. It is a movie; not a documentary. The Patriot is one of those
On my honest opinion “The Patriot” is historically accurate and in these 4 paragraphs I'll tell you why. First, with Benjamin Martin. tTo first start the guy isn't real he some made up man that the director Ronald Emmerich fools you to believe this man help us become the big 50 states. Well you might be thinking well this movie is supposed to help us learn about history not make it up, well you are correct but Benjamin Martin symbolizes many of the people who does help build the big 50 states . To be exact Benjamin Martin exactly could represent Andrew Pickens according to The Patriot Film Fact Or Fiction : People Andrew Pickens was a militia soldier with a large family and a strict Presbyterian.
The American Revolution was a great mark in history because the colonist were striving to get their independence from Great Britain. From seeing many films the revolution was a harsh and emotional time. Many families suffered from the deaths of their husbands and fathers. Soldiers dealt with hunger and bad conditions, but the end it was worth the suffering because America got its independence. The Patriot helped developed the appreciation and understanding of the American Revolution. The scenes from the Patriot that increased the understanding of the American Revolution was the Strategy behind the Battle of Cowpens, Siege of Yorktown, and The Revolutions Divides Families, Friends, and Villages.
Martin's army however overcomes much adversity, and plays a large part in the Continental effort. They later join up with the main Continental Army, and along with the long awaited arrival of the French, force Cornwallis and the British to surrender at Yorktown. Benjamin also gets his revenge by killing Tavington in the battle. This spells victory for the Americans and personal victory for Benjamin Martin. After the white flag is raised Martin returns to his family to rebuild his house and his life.
Sometimes throughout history, events in real life happen that far exceed the story lines of novels and even some of the far-fetched movie plots. In order to keep from producing boring documentaries and to avoid confinement to a set script in history, screenwriters and directors often combine numerous true events into a new creation that only resembles or loosely portrays real life. These combined scenes can come from all different areas, countries, and even times. All in the name of entertainment and without having to be historically accurate. Early in 2000, the filmmakers out of Hollywood, California, created a film titled “The Patriot.” It was originally released as a fictional film for entertainment, but reiterated that it was loosely based on some historical events, but was still fictional, after attack from numerous historians. “The Patriot” portrays Benjamin Martin, a South Carolinian plantation owner, and his exploits for survival after the Revolutionary War forces its way into his family. His use of guerrilla warfare tactics closely resembles the real life fighting style of
In the two films The Patriot, and 1776, there were some similarities and there were differences. Some of the similarities and differences had to do with the setting and the time period it was in. Also in the films the some of the characters shared the same traits, the wars in the movies in the movies were also different like in The Patriot it had a lot to do with war but in the 1776 movie it had to do with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. They both both share the one important thing America’s independence.
The “Patriot” takes place in South Carolina in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. It is a story about a widowed father of seven, named Benjamin Martin. Benjamin was involved in the French and Indian War before marrying and starting a family. He is reluctant to join the conflict as he remembers too well his own experience in the earlier French and Indian War. After his wife passed away he does everything to keep his family together and away from war. He is a patriot who wants no part in a war with Britain.
