The Female Other in Beowulf and Jane Eyre

The role of women in the society has been modified with the change of epochs. There was a time under the name Matriarchy, when women were the rulers of the world. Then their social functions were certainly more important than the men’s ones. However, the long-lasting period of Patriarchy has completely changed the place of women in the world. For centuries, women have been regarded inferior in comparison with men. In addition, they have been even treated as a certain threat to the normal social order. Rochester’s insane wife. She is also depicted as a monster. Her husband indicates that her eyes are similar to “red balls” and face looks like a “mask” (Brontë 281). Jane Eyre completes this description even with the sense of horror. She presents her meeting with Berta Mason in such a way, “In the deep shade, at the farther end of the room, a figure ran backwards and forwards. They are deprived of the individual names, possibility to live in the society, and understanding of inner feelings. The main reason for it is the discrepancy of these female characters with the standards of men-oriented world. To be more precise, they do not perform traditional female roles. In addition, they are not fragile but powerful, not healthy but insane. On the one hand, it may seem that women themselves should be blamed for their otherness. On the other hand, the analysis of root reasons reveals that men should be regarded as guilty. Males by their excessive power have destroyed the fate of Grendel’s mother and Bertha Mason. That is why it becomes clear that it is necessary to change the order in men-oriented world.
