While completing a dual Master’s of Social Work and Public Health at the University of Michigan, I worked at Michigan Medicine. I learned there that there was more to shaping the patient experience than the clinical aspects of patients’ care. My deep desire to contribute positively to patient relations in a system that shaped the professional I am today is the reason why I enthusiastically submit my application for the Patient Relations Specialist position. As a former Patient Services Assistant in the operating rooms, I took the time to learn about the resources available to our patients to ensure that their time with us was one in which they felt validated and supported.

This email is in support of my application for the Medical Assistant position at your medical practice in Northwest Atlanta. I am excited to find this opportunity because it closely aligns with my interests and future aspirations of becoming a Physician Assistant. What is being offered is an opportunity that will allow me to hone and polish my interpersonal, communication, and technical skills, but to also develop new skill sets that some health professionals lack. I have a Bachelor’s of Arts in Biology from Agnes Scott College and a Master of Public Health from Morehouse School of Medicine. As a Biology major, my coursework allowed me to understand the study of life and how disturbances in the biological systems can influence one’s health. I loved this form of science but realized that managed care plays a greater role in the healthcare system. Thus, I minored in public health and later obtained a Master of Public Health to not only strengthen my knowledge, research abilities, and writing skills, but to also gain the ability to think critically and make decisions that will optimize the benefits of the patient. Both educational experiences have provided me with a solid foundation to build my medical career. I am a very intelligent young woman with a deep interest in two diverse approaches, which will ultimately help bridge the gap between patients and the community. Ultimately, I want a career that not only interacts at the individual level, but at the population level as
With the use of advocacy as a nurse, we are also following the CNA Code of Ethics (2008) since it is apart of our practice standards (Yoder-Wise, 2015). A component of our nursing practice when advocating for our clients is health equity and social justice (CNA, 2008; Reutter & Kushner, 2010 as cited in Yoder-Wise, 2015). Advocating for these vulnerable clients is part of nursing practice in order to help them receive appropriate, compassionate, and ethical care from healthcare providers. If a large number of nurses continue to advocate for patients who have a mental illness or an addiction, it can help close the gap of discrimination and stigma. Advocating for better quality care from other nurses and increasing accessibility for these
Patient complaint was received from Linda Evans. According to the report, the patient had a fracture December 2016. She has not been making progress in spite of physical therapy and physical therapy suggested a second opinion. The patient states that after the request for second opinion Dr. Stonestreet slammed the door and said “don’t come back”. She was concerned about his behavior and that others may be treated in this way.
Patient advocacy and community-focus are two of the main reasons that I want to be a doctor. Cookie cutter medicine is not set up to help the patient, its set up to make money. I believe that providers owe it to their patients to treat them as individuals instead of rushing to an almost predestined conclusion. My mom passed away in 2005 due to colon cancer because it was missed/over looked for years until it got to a life threatening level. Where I believe that community focus and patient advocacy intersect is when you actually get down to setting up a treatment plan. You must know your community and the people in it before you can begin to treat them. Language and knowledge barriers need to be considered to ensure that the patient gets the
