This story is very important to me, the situation challenged my knowledge, skill, and my ability to control my personal emotions. This story is very memorable because I have actually been to this residence for other instances where the patient overdosed and was revived. With this, I was able to see the progression of his addiction, just like as we will as we gain experience in the field of nursing. This situation also opened up my mind, even though, the patient had the tools and resources to help with his addiction, this is a growing epidemic that isn’t personal to just an individual. It also involves families, parents, and children. This also reminds me not to be judgmental and that this shouldn’t affect my patient care. It is frustrating
The effect of addiction have consumed billions of individuals all over the world, not only consume but also killed. Individuals have relied on drugs to fill the void in their life that is missing. The addict is not only hurting themselves from the drug use but their families, friends, and their community. In this paper, it will give a description of a 21-year-old male named Anthony. Anthony started using marijuana at the age of 20, trying to hide the pain from the death of his sister. Eventually, marijuana was not enough to get Anthony the extra high he wanted which Anthony made the choice to try another drug and eventually it
Addiction is a theme that has been present throughout my life through members of my family and myself. My father was addicted to gambling and alcohol until finally, his drinking ended his life. My brother struggles with alcohol and keeping ahead of his problematic drinking. I have several cousins that float between alcohol and drugs to fulfill the need for an outside substance. For many years, I pondered how I had escaped the addiction curse in my family only to realize that my addiction is food. I overeat and self-sooth through food even though I have health concerns and know a better way. I spent most of my young adulthood angry at my father because he could not or would not change for his family. I am understanding more through education
October 24th, I visited Bridgeway Recovery Center in Salem. This is a big program that helps people with serious addiction, either substance addiction or gambling addiction. And it is the second of the 100 best nonprofit Oregon business in 2015.
The beach is calm, there are palm trees swaying in the distance, and the soft crash of waves hitting the sand, this paradise seems unshakeable. But there’s a storm coming that will put this tropical Puerto Rican shore in danger. But this is not a weather storm, this is an economic storm that has caused the largest migration of Puerto Ricans to the U.S mainland since the end of World War II. Puerto Rico today, is less of a tropical paradise and more of a financial nightmare. with the repeal of section 963, to the bond boom of the 1970’s, and congress scrambling to help, many wonder if the poorest territory in the U.S. jurisdiction will become a debt ridden no-man's land.
Absolutely addiction is an illness and ripple effects that have an impact on everyone connected to the individual whether directly or indirectly. Apart from what I see on TV i don't have a personally experience with addition. But I know it can destroy a family like it did Sharon Donnelly family. Most we as individual make mistake the mistakes we make as affect our lives more because it is not just our self any more we have, spouse and much more to
As most of us believe, the Bible is a handbook that we can follow our whole entire lives. The bible covers many differeht topics such as this topic; addictive substances. The Bible has countless examples of how we should respect the temple of the Lord, our bodies. We should live by the Bibles examples and we should honour the Lords wishes and keep our bodies clean. When the Bible tells us that we should not do something, it is only for our benefit and not to harm us; that message clearly applies to addictive substances.
Addiction therapy is an extremely tough and painful process to overcome for an addict, especially when it comes to heroin addiction. Presently, heroin is one of the most devastating and destructive illegal drugs in the nation, in terms of the effect it ensues on the person using, their life and social surrounding. Due to the chemically addictive nature of the drug, it makes treating heroin addiction a gruesome process. Not only does heroin affects the individual physically, but it also affect them emotionally and mentally. Many people all over the world are addicted to heroin without ever seeing the hope of recovering, which leaves many to question the effectiveness of treatment therapy as a mean to achieve abstinence.
Prescription drug addiction is a growing epidemic in several cities in the United States. As a result, many cities have begun to have an increase of babies being born addicted to opiates. In rural areas of Maine, this is becoming a more common occurrence, babies born addicted to opiates more than doubled in a five-year span. These women try to stop using drugs for the sake of their unborn children however, this may cause them to have a miscarriage. In this article, it is discussed how the effects of abusing prescribed painkillers affect infants once they are born and the moral dilemma doctors face to try to treat these babies.
Currently, prescription drug addiction is the most serious problem among all the other drug addictions that exists. Several researches have shown us that, addiction to any drug whether legal or ill-legal, is a brain disease which can be treated efficiently. But similar kind of treatment is not apt for all the individuals who suffer from prescription drug addiction. Prescription drug addiction is not at all different from addiction to some other substances or from alcoholism. However, for medical reasons, no one is prescribed to take cocaine or alcohol.
Some people crave crack cocaine or black tar heroin, they find it hard to put down the needle or pipe, society calls them addicts. What about the people who find themselves craving food, or needing to continually eat past the brink of the stomach’s capacity? Society calls them fat, lazy, gluttonous. People often times don’t think to consider food as an addictive substance, but is it? “Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, and craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response” (American Society of Addiction Medicine). Food addiction is characterized by an insuppressible
Within this situation there are at least 3 people involved, all having negative reactions. There is obviously the addict, in complete despair and pain mentally and physically, there's the person/people they tried asking for help which most likely argued with them saying “why should I give you help?” and then there is the one person who planned on having a nice day, to prevent future argument they just compile with the addict. This goes on for years. Imagine all the lives drug addiction has been apart of, in fact, in “2013, 22.7 million Americans needed treatment for a alcohol or drug problem.” (Tagliareni, Sonia). Those were just the people who were able too try to get treatment. Calculating all the statistics for substance abusers are very tricky to make them accurate because there are millions that go unreported because either they cannot receive help due to their person situation, they cannot afford treatment, or in their run with addiction death occurs. Remember addicts are people too, they made a bad decision which ruined their life, they have family, friends and many many acquaintances, not necessarily all good, but there are people who know them, for when they are gone they left their mark. To bring even more perspective addiction has no bias, for example from the article from The New York Times “The Lawyer, the Addict.” It tells the truth of a very successful man who kept many things to himself to the point where he hid his addiction so well his death was what made his loved one notice he was a substance abuser. Even the most perfect person could be susceptible to addiction, the truth is its not starting is the hard part it's quitting. You've most likely seen it in the movies the addict going cold turkey (completely removing their addiction from their
Many people believe the misconception that an addiction is a moral problem and not a disease. To better understand the reasons why an additicition is in fact a disease; I will identify several types of addictions, and the problems associated with them. I will examine reasons why certain people are more susceptible for developing an addiction. Also, I will determine why many addicts deny their problems and many recovery methods addicts use to fight their illness. Researching these issues, will help aid my claim that addiction is a disease.

Addiction- a primary, chronic, neurobiologic disease, with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. It is characterized by behaviors that include one or more of the following: impaired control over drug use, compulsive use, continued use despite harm, and craving. The difference between addiction and abuse is often times unclear. It’s a difficult call to make as a family member or a close friend that is dealing with a person like this in their life, but ultimately it is a call that only the addict can make for themselves. There are tons of different sources and tests and questions out there that can be done that can
