Participation trophies should be Something to win for because of you win then you should feel good about yourself and if you lose, then you need to feel like you need to work harder next year. What will parents think when their kid gets a trophy for nothing? These next paragraphs will tel you why i say no to trophies. To start, trophies are a thing that was brought into this world for people who win a game. sociologist Hilary Levey Friedman says, "That first participation trophy, it does mean something, especially among the younger kids. The children see them more as symbols and remembrances of an experience," participation trophies are for people who earned it, not for people who didn't do anything on their team.
First, I do not think kids should get a trophy for just participating because it can send a misunderstood message. For example, the article "Should Everyone Get A Trophy?" States,"
In section 3 of "The Great Trophy Debate: Do we Need Participation awards" by John O'Sullivan states that organizations spend thousands of dollars on participation trophies. Instead or paying for the participation trophies, the money could go to supplies such as: balls, jerseys, and fields or courts. The money could also be used to put coaches through trainings to become better coaches. Therefore, participation trophies are a waste of money which can be used for better
In the article “Dangers of an ‘everyone gets a trophy’ culture?” Ashley Merryman interviews thirty seven children to see what they think about participation trophies. One kid, Levey Friedman, said to Ashley Merryman “Well, I kind of purposely played in this esiar one because I knew I would win and now I don’t really count that as a real victory because I went in and I knew it was below my level.” In other words Levey Friedman only played on the lower level sports team to win. One year when I played soccer we only won one out of thirteen games. At the end of the year we got our trophies and awards and now every time I see the soccer trophy it just reminds me of how bad our team was and how bad we did that season. Kids know when a sport is below their level so it's dangerous to think that everyone's a
In an age where everyone is expected to be recognized, there must be an understanding that the world does not progress by congratulating the “average.” I believe that giving participation trophies makes people stop competing; especially if the trophies are given at a very early age. For example, a team of small children have a terrible baseball season, but it’s okay! Because the coach gives out trophies to everyone. This in turn only teaches the child that no matter how bad life gets, they will always be rewarded. Participation trophies create future generations of entitled adults as seen by today’s generation. We need to reward kids that work hard for what they do for the sake of risk and reward. That is simply how progress is made in society. Yet I agree with one point made by the opposing side. I believe that participation should be recognized sometimes. Participation can teach kids that teamwork matters in every little aspect of society. Participation trophies should be eliminated but participation should still merely just be recognized with a pat on the back as said by Betty Berdan, a high school junior from Connecticut. Participation trophies overall hinder the growing and learning process of kids; whether it is through sports, or any other competitive involvement.
Reason-Rupe poll, 43 percent of Americans believe that every child should receive a trophy for participation, but the numbers drop with income, education, and age. Although participation trophies can cause unrealistic expectations in children, these trophies raise self-esteem and build a work ethic.
Once you reach age eight you understand the concept of the game and that their are winners and losers. By taking away participation trophies we can eliminate the culture of expectation that everyone gets a trophy for showing up and kids will understand that you are going to have to work hard to get a trophy that you truly deserve. If we do decide to stop giving out participation trophies children need to understand that “It’s okay to lose, but it’s not ok to not try your best” (Lula Bauer). Lessons in sports can still be taught without participation trophies. “Trophies aren’t all the issues.
Participation trophies can vary from sports to clubs to activities of any type. Many people believe these standard awards provide many benefits for children and their childhood growth. However, children today have become accustomed to receiving an item or prize regardless the outcome of their effort, which could potentially send an unhealthy message about achievement and diminish the value of the award.
Participation trophies are a highly debated topic among childrens sports. Many people beleive it is unessarcary, while others beleive it boosts self-esteem to non-confident young athletes. Participation Trophies should not be handed out because kids will learn that if the just give a little effort towards accomplishing something they will get rewarded.
“Sending him home empty-handed at the end of a hard-fought season won’t help him learn the lesson of losing, it will teach him early that there’s no value in the attempt” (Zadrozny). Prizes such as trophies and ribbons are a controversial topic in society. Some believe that not enough are handed out to children while others believe that too many are handed out. Trophies are a symbol of victory and triumph, but do not forget that children just want to feel part of a team even though they are not good enough. Putting forth an honest effort is important, and doing well is the habit on which they will be repeatedly evaluated in life. Even though some believe trophies are not good, they give a boost of confidence while keeping children happy and
When I'm older, I'd love to be able to look at those rewards and remember everything about the sport. Maybe looking at memorabilia will even make a few people get in contact with old teammates and friends and catch up on all the years that have gone by. Not to mention, being reminded of being part of team can be helpful in almost every occupation. These small awards instill the idea in a person's mind that working as a unit can lead to success. Success doesn't always mean coming in first place or being the most valuable player. Success can mean working collaboratively and becoming a family. Clearly, giving participation trophies can lead to many great things in a person's future, including when they look at the awards and remember what they were a part
It is good for young children to get participation trophies because it makes a positive impact on them that they have accomplished something even if they aren't the best. There have been Youth Developers that say it is better for children to get participation trophies because is makes a good experience, and they will come back and try again the next season and want to keep participating Kenneth Barish a psychology professor at Weill Cornell Medical College said that trophies encourage participation in sports and that children will learn about competition later in life and that the stuff they do now is only for fun. The difference from participation trophies and regular trophies is that the participation trophies are tiny ones that are meant for the children to have something that signifies they accomplished something. This makes a good impact on children to try something new and even of they weren't the best they tried it and they did not quit and give up they made a promise to the team they would be there
Participation trophies should not be handed out to teach children the purpose of working hard to achieve your
There has been a lot of controversy lately if kids should get participation trophies. Participation trophies are the trophies handed out to the kids or teams that do not do good in the competition. Now my opinion is I think they should get rid of the participation trophies for good. I think it takes all the competition out of it and it makes kids think they do not have to try as hard because they know they are getting a trophy no matter what. Other people argue that if all the kids get a trophy it gives them the courage to keep playing even if they are not as good as the other kids and that they should be awarded for their efforts. I can see where they are coming from because it is good for all kids to play sports, it is a lot of fun! I think
Participation trophies are a very bad thing. Participation trophies should not be given out to young kids that have no idea what they are. Little kids more than likely do not know what they are and some might think that they won even though they lost. With kids not knowing what they are makes them think that they did just as good as the kids that won. They need to know what they did wrong and what the can do to improve that and be like the kids that won. Some kids might grow up with everyone telling them that they did great and they have nothing to work on. They think they are better than those who won and even everyone in their life. Kids should grow up becoming better in things that they feel passionate about and not just giving up. Kids
Participation trophies are changing kids ideas of winning around the globe in many ways. First off, it gives children the wrong impression on working or putting an effort towards something. Trophies are something you should have to earn. Life doesn’t give you a participation medal, you have to earn it (Website #2). Kids just need to learn that
