The article Parent, Child, and Social Correlates of Parental Discipline Style: A Retrospective, Multi-Informant Investigation With Female Twins written by T.D. Wade and K.S. Kendler, addresses the many types of parental discipline and the possible explanation as to how they developed their disciplinary habits. This article, introduced two different factors of parental behavior; the first was responsiveness, and the second was demandingness. Responsiveness was regarding parental warmth, and demandingness involved constituent discipline. Included in the article is a study that investigated a set of female twins and the correlation of parents, children, society, and parental discipline style. The first was associated to childhood abuse, difficulty in anger management, marital trials, and violence between the parents, which led to physical discipline, neglect, and verbal abuse towards the children. The second subgroup showed a similar past experience with childhood abuse in the parents, but appeared as limitations and physical discipline in a more positive light than the first. The third and final subgroup showed a correlation between good marital and childhood experiences, with little disciplinary practice (Kendler). Along with these components, parenting styles also showed that they could be influenced with outside factors such as financial standing, the environment, and genetics.
My favorite part of the article is Kendler’s reference to a part of Holden, Miller, Rothbaum, and Wiesz’s study, that “…parenting is the outcome of a bi-directional process that involves the interdependent power relationships as well as behavioral and cognitive agency of both parent and child.” I feel that society forgets that the way a parent disciplines is also influenced by the child they are disciplining. A child who is difficult to handle may lead a parent to rely on using force or threats as a form of discipline, where a fair behaved child may need a simple
