Lung cancer is the growth of abnormal cells in one or both of the lungs. This is usually in the cells that line the air passages. The abnormal cells that do not develop into healthy lung tissues divide rapidly to form tumors. Lungs are the spongy organs in the chest that take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide when breathing. They are essential to live, so lung cancer can be very dangerous. This disease is quite common, making it important to know at least a little bit about. Lung cancer is a disease that has many causes and life-affecting symptoms; even though treatment can be long and hard, if caught early enough, there is a good chance of survival.
Lung cancer is the number one leading cause of cancer deaths in both American women and men in the US. Smoking causes most cases. If you smoke more cigarettes, or started smoking earlier, you have a greater risk of getting lung cancer (“Lung Cancer”). Too many people, 45 percent, believe that the disease is something people “bring on themselves” from either smoking or having smoked previously (“Lung Cancer; More than Half”). Even though smoking is the greatest risk factor for cancer, there are many other ways to get the disease, including exposure to second-hand smoke, radon, asbestos, and other chemicals (“Lung Cancer; Learning the Signs”). The symptoms can be tough to live with; so many people who are living with lung cancer want new ways of treatment. Specialists are still trying to find new ways of curing lung cancer; however, today’s patients must live with the treatments available.
