The story of Pandora and her box are the greeks way of explaining evil. It comes from the myth of Pandora's creation in Hesiod's Works and Days. This myth is very old an even has several versions of the myth.
In the myth,Pandora,meaning “all-giving”, was the first woman on earth. Before humans there were the immortal Gods and Titans. A long time ago Gods and titans fought each other for supremacy. The gods won and locked the titans away forever.
Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus were Titans but pledged their loyalty to Zeus and the Olympians, so they fought on the god's side in the war since Prometheus was born with the special power of prophecy and knew that Zeus would defeat the Titans.

Even though Epimetheus’ brother,
Prometheus, had warned him of Zeus’ trickery and told him not to accept gifts from the gods, Epimetheus was too taken with her beauty and wanted to marry her anyway.
Sometimes gods where tricked or made mistakes, just like us.
As a wedding present, Zeus gave Pandora a box but warned her never to open it.
Pandora, who was created to be curious, couldn’t stay away from the box and the urge to open the box overcame her. Horrible things flew out of the box including greed, envy, hatred, pain, disease, hunger, poverty, war, and death.(Though some versions of this story say that the box held good things for mankind, which Pandora let escape from the box, and fly away forever, only catching Hope.) Pandora opened the jar and all the evils flew out, leaving only "Hope" inside once she had closed it again. Pandora opens a jar containing death and many other evils which were released into the world. She hastens to close the container, but the whole contents had escaped except for one thing that lay at the bottom, which was hope.
