For many people, birds are seen to either be pets or wild animals. There is a massive amount of species when it comes to learning about birds. One of the birds that I decided to do my research paper on is Owls. The way I describe an owl is a type of bird that has a round head and large eyes, but there are plenty more ways to describe an owl which is the purpose of this paper. An interesting fact about owls is that they cannot move their eyes within their sockets like we can. In order to look around, they have to move their entire head, which has a range of movement of about 270°. Which many people find creepy and are scared of them. The smallest species is the tiny elf owl, measuring about 6 inches long, that live in western Mexico and the Southwestern United States. The largest species is the great gray owl that lives deep in woods of Alaska and Canada as far north as trees grow. Gray owls grow to about 30 inches long. Now that I have provided general information about the owl it brings me to the part where I talk about their role in the environment especially in Sequoia National Forest. First and Foremost, we need to address how there is a couple type of species of owls in Sequoia National Forest. One of them is the spotted owl which is considered to be the native resident in this forest. The other two types of owls are the northern pygmy owl which is a small owl native to North and Central America. There is also the western screech owl which is as well a small owl native to North and Central America, and the females of the species are also larger than the males. In the article titled Population Dynamics of Spotted Owls in the Sierra Nevada, California, we are presented with a study to see the dynamics of how spotted owls are populated around the Sierra Nevada where Sequoia National Forest is located at.
