"Obstacles are stepping stones to success.” This quote defines who I am today and describes me well. The obstacles I overcame forged me into a strong learner. When I look back at my life and all I have had to endure, I’m grateful to be alive and well. One of the hardest obstacles I had to face, and still continually struggle with, was my fear of failure. This fear has discouraged me many times, but it was not until my junior year of high school that it caused me to make a mistake from which it took years to recover. My junior year of high school was when I took multiple AP courses in the same semester. I could not keep up with the papers and the tests that were due every week. My stress got so bad that I experienced, that what I now realize, …show more content…
My parents did not think it was a good idea for me to stay in those AP classes, and managed to convince my school counselor to drop me from them. It was a relief to be placed in easier level classes, but I started to fear my ability to go to college. I believed there was no way I would be able to pass my college classes if I could not handle AP courses in high school. Senior year came, and I did not apply to any colleges, and did not study for the SAT. I basically thought I would never be good enough to go to college and achieve my dreams. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to go into medicine, working in a hospital and saving lives were huge aspirations of mine. I let the trials of life make me believe that my goals were not realistic. Once I graduated from high school, I settled for making minimum wage with part time jobs because that was all I thought that I could be. Eventually after two years, I got tired of living paycheck to paycheck. I discussed my frustrations with my mother, and she told me I should go back to school if I wanted to improve my life. In that moment, I knew she was right and accepted that my growth depended on hard

In my life, I have had to overcome many obstacles and difficult things that have come my way. I feel that these events have made me into the person that I am today. The first obstacle I have had to overcome is growing up without a father. My father, Brian Montgomery, passed away at the age of 46, from stage 3 brain cancer. I was five years old. Being that I was so young when my father passed, I do not remember him very well. It is difficult when my friends, or people that do not know me very well
As humans, we face various obstacles on a daily basis. Most of the time, they are relatively insignificant due to the frequency and value they have in our lives. However, all of us have and will continue to deal with significant obstacles that will greatly challenge us. I have discovered that having a supportive family, setting goals, and determination has helped me effectively overcome obstacles. In Anna Harrington’s article, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way”, resilience and the importance
Reflecting on all the times in my life that I have had to overcome obstacles there is a long list of mishaps, lessons learned and many other adventures. The top one of the list is going through US Navy boot camp, which consisted of basically being torn down and built back up. In short you are told that the way you have always learned things from as early age is the wrong way and there is only one way the Navy way. When you step off the plane you are put onto a bus to take a long ride to a place
be able reach these different goals, persistence must be shown, by always trying and never giving up when failure takes over. All task have obstacles along their paths, and there obstacles are what gives the task their value. If a challenge is easy to overcome, and anyone can overcome it, then what use is there in completing it? The overcoming of obstacles is the real learning of the experience, not the act of reaching the finish. As the great martial artist once said, “Success is the journey, not
Prompt #2: Describe an obstacle that you’ve experienced. What does your experience show about your character? The biggest obstacle I’ve ever faced was overcoming my fear of falling from great heights. During the summer break after my sophomore year, I went to a summer camp in Colorado. Unbeknownst to me, one of the activities at the camp involved rappelling down the side of a mountain. As I made the trek to the designated rappelling area, I was completely enthralled in my own fear that I had no
We all have obstacles we have overcome in our lives and still need to down the road. The quote from philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzche, “What does not kill me makes me stronger” (Nietzche, 1888) states that it is in the event or challenge that strengthens the individual, but research points more to the role of individual responses. Another statement in the article is “Approaching life’s challenges in a positive, optimistic way by demonstrating self-control stamina and good character with your
Overcoming anything can seem out of one’s reach. I have faced many obstacles in my life. The challenge I would like to share is obtaining a college education while having a family. Being a strong willed person has helped me to make a way for school. It became an obstacle when, I graduate high school. I had been put on homebound due to; I had my first child just months before I graduated. My parents had me later in life. Mother was in her forty’s when I was born. People would always mistake
The obstacle that I faced fits in my definition, because it shows that if I was never able to face that at the time I wouldn’t be able to go and play for teams. If I never knew how not to be scared in basketball games, and not freeze up during games too, I wouldn’t be able to play for teams. So that was an obstacle that I had to overcome, because if I didn’t I knew that I probably wouldn’t be able to play the sport the I love. The reason why I feel like this was an important obstacle was that I could
Overcoming obstacles that inevitably enter into your life can be a tricky to cope with. Life is all about setting goals, finding oneself, and achieving what you love to do. Whether that is being a drug dealer, similar to David Clark, from the film We’re the Millers or losing everything suddenly, like Tammy from the film Tammy. Unexpected obstacles arise circumstantially between the two protagonist, however the bumps in their path leads them to a connection that they will have for the rest of their
“We are not what we've done. We are what we’ve overcome.” This set of wise words implies that our true identity is not defined by the achievements we have made, but rather by the obstacles that we manage to overcome and what we learn from them. Like most others, I faced some struggles growing up, and they have played a major role in who I am today. While, some of these struggles consisted of physical barriers in the way of my education, others were economic struggles, later serving as my motivational
Overcoming Obstacles In my culture, society looks down at mental illness and when news of mental illness gets out in the society, one’s reputation is pretty much destroyed. My elder brother, Imran, was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was a teenager. My family was still living in Bangladesh at the time and my brother’s illness was treated as a secret by my parents. My parents went above and beyond to hide my brother’s illness because we come from a culture that is quick to condemn
Overcoming Obstacles Obstacles are inevitable and show up in the daily lives of everyone. It is, however, the way one manages these obstacles that will decide how much success and accomplishments they receive. Challenges may come up, but they can be controlled by persistence, ambition, and determination. Someone’s dream and the specific challenges may be different than those in this poem, but the message can apply to anyone. In “As I Grew Older,” by Langston Hughes, the poet uses symbolism, tone
