Adversity is something we will all face. It’ll affect everyone ranging, from myself to characters in a book. Even though going through something so challenging, so painful, and so life changing can be hard, how you chose to handle it affects whether or not you overcome it. Adversity can either break a person or make them stronger; it’s up to their will to fight.

Adversity is something that many people are able to over come, most people can by themselves, others it requires a lot of help and if they work together and set aside petty fears it will be overcome. When they come out to the other side they will be stronger that before both mentally and/or

Overcoming adversity is hard, but these people survived the toughest obstacles that life could throw at you. Adversity is something everyone goes through, but these are extraordinary cases of what people went through.This crowd of people overcame adversity in three ways, only caring about what they thought, being creative, and facing their problems.

“Life is a lot like surfing…When you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave” (“Soul Surfer”). Bethany Hamilton endured a very traumatic experience in her life, and this is why she is known as the “Soul Surfer.” The difficulties she faced and overcame were truly remarkable.

At one point in his or her life, everyone is faced with some type of difficulty or problem that seems impossible to solve. Whether it be trying to convince people with an opposing view that your view is correct, or the difficulty of choosing between two opportunities, that could change your life, everyone shares the experience of being faced with adversity. In these strenuous moments everyone reacts in their own unique way, allowing some people to overcome the difficult moment, while others are left unsuccessful. This begs the question, in the face of adversity, what causes some people to prevail while others fail? While there could be countless answers to this question for any given scenario, it ultimately comes down to one's attitude and fortitude.

Adversity can be seen in many different ways. Some people look at adversity as a learning experience, while others view adversity as a situation marked with misfortune. When a person is faced with adversity, rather than viewing it as something to hate, they should see it as a opportunity to grow. In the stories by Doris Lessing, W.D Wetherell and Alice Walker, they all show different types of challenges each character had to over come and their journey to do so. These stories all shared similar outcomes, they demonstrate how each character used an obstacle they were faced with, and turned it into a beneficial experience and how it shaped them into the person they are today.

One characteristic that proves that Bethany was resilient was her being courageous. She showed that she was bold because after the shark attack, she wanted to get back into the water. Even though she lost her left arm, she was brave enough to return to surfing and to not think about getting attacked by a shark. She was fearless enough to compete in a world competition with only one arm missing. She has practiced so hard to become a professional surfer. Here is an example of why she was courageous. “I was not afraid,” she says. “My whole mind concentrated on catching a wave.” (Hamilton, 8).

High schooler Kayla Montgomery who was diagnosed with M.S. shows great resilience through her situation. Kayla said,” Coach, I don’t know how much time I have left, so I want to run fast — don’t hold back.” Even though she has been diagnosed with a disease she does not want to stop being her normal self. Kayla does not want to be treated differently or looked at as she is an outlier. Having resilience allows a person to fight through anything that occurs in their life.

''Try it one more time. This will be it.'' Bethany Hamilton father shouted at her. Everybody was traumatized after the attack people had their doubts that she wasn’t going to make it others were worried she wasn’t going to be the same. Don’t many people get attacked by sharks 2 out of 10 people will be attacked by one each year. Luckily she survived the attack by staying calm and not panicking. After the terrifying shark attack, Bethany Hamilton demonstrated resilience by overcoming the tragedy to achieve her surfing dream. She's a hero if you asked me. Although it may not seem like it Bethany helped many people with achieving their dreams and never giving up.

Overcoming adversity is a challenge that everyone has to face. Some good examples of people who overcame adversity are the Boston Marathon runners, John J. Pinder, and Malala Yousafzai. They all had challenges to face, but they never gave up. Overcoming adversity is going to be hard, but the ending will be worthwhile, that’s why patience is needed to overcome adversity. Life is like a roller coaster, full of ups, downs, inside outs, sometimes you may start out slow, but as you go along, you speed up, in adversity, it may take some time to think about how to overcome it, but you’ get the hang of it and will eventually overcome it. Malala was faced with a lot of problems and challenges, but she pulled through and overcame adversity.

When it comes to being a survivor, remaining composed is important-especially when a shark has bitten off one's arm. Bethany's trait is shown when ABC news states that, "throughout the terrifying ordeal, Hamilton remained calm"(paragraph 9). Getting attacked by a shark is not the most relaxing or calming situation. The fact that Bethany was composed and handled it so well shows true strength. Her actions made it easier to handle the ordeal and Bethany Hamilton now serves as a role model for many. In the case of survival, the ability to remain composed during terror is vital.

In the movie Soul Surfer, the audience is able to witness God’s role in a young person’s development. Unlike many young adults, Bethany faced challenges that can be unimaginable to the average person. However, her perseverance can prove that if she can overcome her own adversities, anyone can overcome their own with the help of God. Bethany did the impossible, she not only got back on a surfboard after losing her arm, which is extremely brave on its own, she became a pro surfer against all odds. Bethany’s accomplishments are a testament to her strength, a strength she got from her faith in God.

The film's protagonist, Bethany Hamilton, is young but demonstrates remarkable maturity for her age. She is passionate about and committed to surfing as a recreational activity and also as a professional sport. Bethany has a strong Christian faith, which is shown to be an important part of her character as well as her family background. Bethany's parents Tom and Cheri are both depicted as stalwart supporters of their daughter, as well as being laid-back surfers who are entrenched in Hawaii. Bethany has two brothers, Noah and Timmy.
