Gates dropped out of college to start a business with another student like him and then soon after launched as a billionaire. Malcolm Gladwell explains that it wasn’t as simple as that for Bill Gates. Gates and his friend, Paul Allen, had spent hours on programming until late hours at the University of Washington near his family home. What was an addiction to programming and 10,000 hours later for Allen and Gates, lead to being a successful launch of the well-known Microsoft program. Although Gates’ hard work paid off, he was fortunate to have access and opportunities to use computer technology when very few had the chance to come near a computer.

After reading this chapter of the book, I think that Bill Gates should be richer than me due to his smartness and knowledge in the field of technology. Bill Gates did not just become rich for no reason. He co-founded Microsoft, which is the world's largest personal computer company, with another important entrepreneurs, Paul Allen. On the other hand, their is a huge gap between the rich and the poor. Millions of people around the world live on five dollars a day, while entrepreneurs, such as Bill Gates, live on thousands of dollars a day. This chapter has taught me to realize that it is not all about the Benjamins and to use the money we have to change the separation between the rich and the poor.

Six Years ago, the world lost one the most technologically and innovatively inclined individuals of his time. He was best known for creating classy and cutting edge technology that many people worldwide would attempt to be first in line for when the newest edition was released. This man’s name was Steve Jobs. He was the founder and CEO of Apple, a company that he and Steve Wozniak developed in Jobs’s garage after he dropped out of college. Creating such a company was no easy task, but Jobs persevered and didn’t back down from any challenge that he faced along the way. He is an individual that is very hard to ignore, specifically when listening to him speak. For a man of so many accomplishments, it is no surprise that Stanford invited him to speak at the 2005 commencement ceremony. This speech is said to be one of the best he had ever given. The speech dives into Job’s life and lessons he learned along the way through trial and error. Jobs tries to convince the graduates that they should to listen to their heart when selecting a career. Jobs uses ethos to establish credibility, pathetic appeals to get the audience to listen to his advice and utilizes a logical argument to show that in order to achieve success, one must stay true to who they are.

After Gates graduated high school, with a perfect 800 on the SAT, he went to Harvard law school in 1973 (“Gates, Bill” 2) (“Gates, William Henry, III” 1). In 1975 his friend Paul Allen came up to him while Bill was in college and showed him a Popular Mechanics article about a $350 microcomputer, Gates read this article and was convinced that he wanted to be in the computer industry (“Gates, William Henry, III” 1). As a sophomore in college he and Paul Allen made the computer language BASIC compatible to microcomputers, this took much skill and he was the first to do it (Leaders of info 2). He did this for a company called MITS (Leaders of info 2). This shows his motivation to do well in the world, and to be successful. With this new success in the BASIC software, he dropped out of Harvard and went to pursue his new career (“Gates, Bill 1). He went to Albuquerque, New Mexico with Paul and they both founded a new company called Microsoft to mass produce their new software (Leaders of Info 2).

These principles give individuals the strength to work hard to make a profit. When individuals work hard to pursue their self-interest and achieve their goals, they end up benefitting the entire society. These benefits can have extreme outreaches to a vast amount of people. Bill Gates is a prime example of an individual who worked extremely hard for himself and in achieving his goals, has benefitted millions of people around the world. As a young keener of technology, Gates set out to create quite possibly the largest software company in the entire world. Known as “Microsoft,” the software company is known to people across the world. It has long been one of the most popular software companies and has provided software to countries everywhere. Because of Gates’ interest in technology and the grant of freedom to pursue his self-interest, he created the software company that billions of people have purchased. This has created billions of dollars in revenue for the company as consumers have set out to buy the well-known software.
