"We all wear masks and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing some of our skin." Wearing a mask has become part of our daily life, it is almost impossible to be yourself with everyone. The way you act around your mom will always be different than the way you behave in a conference. Our society demands that we present an identity that can be comfortably catalogued. You are expected to have an easily identifiable mask.
The YouTube video "Identity" by Kahlil KJ Adames shows a school where all the students are wearing masks and the protagonist of the video is the only one wearing a different mask. Moreover, she is the only person who has the courage to take it off at the end. When she does that, they all seem astonished and amazed by her action for they don’t dare to reveal their true identities. It's easier to fit in wearing a mask because you can change according to the people you are interacting with. In addition to that, the poem "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar explains the fact that we all or most of

For example you shouldn’t become a fake person just to please others. Your mask should just be a way that is going to make your conversations or interactions easier but it should never reach a level where you change into a fake individual telling lies and hurting others. For instance you shouldn’t pretend to be someone you are not even close to. This is why I agree with the video to a certain degree for we should take off the masks at some point in our lives and be who we really are expressing every single thought that makes us unique. The mask we wear should hide our true identity to a certain extent but we should never forget who we really are. On the other hand , I also agree with the poem for I am one of those people who hide their emotions behind a mask. It's really hard to open up and express your sadness or weakness to anyone but yourself. I prefer showing my success rather than my
Wearing a mask isn't always wearing you. Throughout time people have been wearing mask’s. For example people used it to protect themselves, hide from someone else, they can use it for religious reasons or even to be happy. An example of this is when the jewish people were hiding from the germans. or In my dad's a liar he was is protecting his kid from knowing the truth that they were broke.
In the readings the the veil and mask both symbolize how people treat you when you’re different. In “The Minister’s Black Veil” it shows that the pastor wearing the veil that the people treat him in a rude even disrespectful way, and in the “We Wear the Mask” it also shows the disrespect given to people who are different. In these readings it shows that it’s easier to hide your emotions then share what’s really wrong. They both symbolize wrongs with the people not wanting to hear the full story before judging you, or even judging you at all. They both show a form of rejection for things that they feel necessary or can’t change.
We all mask something; everybody does. Think about actors, dress up, students, or criminals. They all mask something and it helps them disguise their real character. Most people just jump to the conclusion that masks are harmful, but some masks worn are for others sake. They are worn to cover yourself from the community or the world. Masks are more beneficial than harmful.
“One Self or Many Selves” givens a claim that: “In sort, change the situation and you change my
“We all have a social mask, right? We put it on, we go out, put our best foot forward, our best image. But behind that social mask is a personal truth, what we really, really believe about who we are and what we're capable of.” Sometimes people can use mask’s to change how they look, feel, and what they think. Everyone has their own mask that they use so that other people do not judge them on who they are. People also mask themselves if they do not think they meet any standards that other people have. It is more beneficial than harmful to mask yourself.
Determined to find exactly what altered masks can do to an identity, an experiment involving 18 female college students and a clinical trainee was conducted. Gergen’s intentions were to “find the factors of an individual’s choice
Wearing a mask or putting on some sort of facade is more often than not considered a form of deception. In addition, wearing a mask is usually associated with a manner of trickery or illusion. Throughout history, many slaves wore them purely because the mask hid the true emotions that the slaves were feeling. Wearing a mask and suppressing their genuine feelings was a way for slaves to prevent the slave master from truly knowing what was going on inside their minds, and more importantly, this allowed the slaves to have a bit of individuality without their master’s detection. The mask also gave the false impression that the slaves were exactly how their masters assumed, uninformed, unable of feeling true emotion, and not capable to think for themselves.
Many people in today’s culture have to hide who they really are inside to avoid public humiliation and the fear being different than everyone else, which can lead to many equality issues.
“Like circus performers, we smear on makeup to become someone else. Far beyond applying a little lip gloss or hair dye, our mask attempts to cover up who we really are. Our mask attempts to cover up who we really are […] what we’ve been through, what we know to be important, and what we are afraid to share with others”. (O’Leary, 36) John O’Leary focuses heavily on the concept of taking off our masks in his inspirational book, On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life. What O’Leary means by this analogy is that we should all break the barriers which we have erected to protect ourselves from the world, walls that were built after being hurt, experiencing something traumatic, or perhaps after being betrayed. However, such walls oftentimes do not benefit ourselves in the way that we may wish. Instead, more often than not, our masks do the opposite, and they isolate us from what we as humans need most: friendship, companionship, and love.
In the 1896 symbolic poem “We Wear the Mask,” Paul Laurence Dunbar suggests that people are apathetic to the pain and suffering of others making it easier for one to hide their troubles behind a mask than to confront them. In the beginning, Dunbar uses a spine-chilling tone as he describes the mask while utilizing strange diction to exhibit the deception and protection that the mask symbolizes. Dunbar continues his eerie tone and strange diction as he uses juxtaposition to show that despite the pain people feel the mask they wear gives them a smiling appearance because the world does not care to see people’s hearts in pain. In the middle Dunbar shifts to a sarcastic tone and somber diction as he asserts that the world does not care about the
My responce response to that is that not all people use a mask with bad intentions. James Earl Jones for example, masked the fact that he had diabetes. He also had a stutter. He hid that from people because he didn’t want to feel bad about himself. After that he helped raise awareness for people with
A mask gives a superhero the ability to hide their true identity. It allows them to do things they would never be able to do without their mask. Batman, among the many superheroes/vigilantes, has the ability to fight crime at night and live as Bruce Wayne during the day. If Bruce Wayne ever tried fighting crime as Bruce Wayne, he would no longer be able to live his life of luxury, but instead live a life behind bars. When dressed up as his alter ego, Batman, he has the ability to catch criminals and bend the laws a bit. Unfortunately, it is because of that ability that superheroes then decide to do things as they please. They go about their ways with no care because they believe that they can’t possibly be held accountable for their actions
Mask Many people tend to put on a “mask” to hide their true self. People will act differently to fit in or acquire something. A mask allows for a person to hide their true self and often times helps people deceive others. In the play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth put on a mask to hide her cruel, manipulative, and greedy self.
A mask is a covering worn on the face or something that disguises or conceals oneself. All the characters in Shakespeare's Hamlet hide behind masks to cover up who they really are, which contridictes a main idea, expressed by the fool, Old Polonius, "To thine ownself be true" (Polonius - 1.3.84). All the characters share strengths and triumphs, flaws and downfalls. Instead of revealing their vulnerabilities, each of them wears a mask that conceals who they are and there true convictions. The masks brought about feelings such as fear, hatred, insanity, indecisiveness, ambitiousness, and vengeance all of which contribute to the tragic ending of the play. Shakespeare reveals the idea of the
In We Wear the Mask, the author’s purpose is to push the reader to feel something about the way things were in his perspective.
