Thanks Vanessa, you did a great job defining the role and use of supervision. I did not know if you noticed that Our Lady of the Lake mission’s statement is in perfect line with the social worker code of ethics. I would like to share what I found in similarity with our mission statement. According to the National Association of Social Work (2010), the mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of core values. These core values, embraced by social workers throughout the professions’ history, are foundation of social work’s unique purpose and perspective. Service, Social justice, Dignity, Dignity and worth of the person, Importance of human relationships, Integrity, and Competence. This constellation of core values reflects what is unique to the social work profession. According to Kiser (2012) the field supervisor is key to student learning in any human services internship. Ideally, supervisory relationships are based on trust and mutual understanding. Great job and good luck.
Question: In your video you stated that there were two

I would like to add to your findings concerning your responsibilities as a student and the obligations of supervision. Kiser (2012) explains that effective supervisors are knowledgeable, supportive, and skillful in giving feedback. They must be willing to address difficult issues as they arise, teach their supervises important information and skills, model high standards of professionalism and expertise. I agree that social workers advocate for person or persons with mental illness. Involvement in policy practice is widely regarded as an important means for social workers to contribute to the development of policies that promote social and economic justice, improve the well-being of social services users, and provide opportunities for self-determination (Colby, 2008; Haynes & Mickelson, 2009; Hoefer,
Social Care Supervision refers to the strategies and body of service done within a social care plant in order to improve on the level of performance of the social care workers. Supervision is a critical idea in any social or structured society in which services of high quality and demand are being offered. Many social health care centers in the world are in need of equitable service delivery programs that will oversee a fruitful service reception by the clients. As such, Social Care Supervision refers to this body of knowledge and strategies used to support and instill hard work, quality delivery of products and services, together with a continuum of good delivery of goods and services to the clients (Gray & Brown 2010, p. 45-85).
Supervision has its origins in social work and casework, but it was also developed during the growth of charitable social agencies
Social work professions need to understand the importance of how individuals interact both with other people and their environment, to have an understanding how individuals are affected by these interactions (Rogers, p. 2). According to Rogers (2016), “Social workers are knowledgeable about human behavior across the life course; the range of social systems in which people live; and the ways social systems promote or deter people in maintaining or achieving health and well-being. Social workers apply theories and knowledge from the liberal arts to understand biological, social, cultural, psychological, and spiritual development (p. 2). Their work with clients begins with assessments to evaluations of intervention and is based in and supports of the core value system of the profession.
My responsibility as a social worker is to shed light on issues of oppression and engage in social and political actions to meet the needs of everyone regardless of their limitations. This includes providing equal access to employment, services and basic human needs. As a social worker, I have learned from my conducted research that they are a lot of group homes in Brooklyn which focus on one person at time. In my practice as a social worker I will apply the knowledge and skills from learning about the structure and organizations of group homes to meet the needs of the many different clients with mental
Licensed Masters of Social Worker, Kimberley Fleischer, serves as a field supervisor for students obtaining a masters degree in the field of social work. She first attended Iowa State University and obtained her undergraduate degree in psychology. Later, she received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Kansas. She has worked in the field of social work for eleven years and has been with Richland County School District for nine years. Mrs. Fleischer currently serves two elementary schools, Lonnie B. Nelson and Pontiac for the 2016-2017 school year. She has been with Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary for three years and is currently serving her eighth year as a field supervisor. In order to identify her values, practice, leadership and supervision style, I interviewed Mrs. Fleischer 's to better understand her role professionally and personally as a school social worker. The interview was conducted through an open-ended response questionnaire. These responses were used along with information received during supervisory sessions. The combination of two, provided meaningful insight to the significance of an organization 's purpose, structure and effectiveness as well how individual social workers impact their occupational placements.
The “Models of Supervision: Parallel Processes and Honest Relationships” by Dr. Lawrence Shulman was very helpful, informative and challenging. It was an important podcast that covers the importance of supervision in the social work profession. It was enlightening for me to pay attention to various aspects of the supervision process. Dr. Shulman stated the need for establishing a good relationship between the supervisor and the social worker or clients. This relationship should be built on trust, respect, honesty and caring to obtain successful result and outcome in the field of social work. Also, in the supervision process is very important to set clear and appropriate boundaries between the supervisor and social worker. The supervision is also about that the supervisor cares about the social worker as much as he/she cares about the clients. Dr. illustrated also in this
I am interning at Heartfelt, a mental health agency that works with adults, children and their families that deal with any type of behavior and mental health problem since 2006 with a mission to provide culturally competent, and professionally sound mental health, foster care, youth development and family support services to empower our community one child and one family at a time. The services that Heartfelt offers to clients are intensive in-home therapy, outpatient therapy, community support team (CST), peer support, medication management, and residential level III group home. Many of the clients at Heartfelt are offered Outpatient therapy service compared to other services. My role at Heartfelt is as an intern who is supervised by a MSW field supervisor completing tasks. Few of tasks that I perform at Heartfelt is shadowing professionals performing assessments and intakes with clients, working on various administrative projects such as finding resources for clients and reviewing and updating clients’ charts.
Maurice William’s understands that social workers get tired because of their relentless job responsibilities, therefore, she makes sure they don’t experience burn out since it is her responsibility to keep the families intact (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011). Since she is not out in the field visiting the homes, she puts her faith in her upper management team to be able to listen and pay attention to any problems or potential future problems (Laureate Education, Inc. 2011). Since she is unable to be out in the field, Williams uses her supervisory skills to train her staff to be able to identify potential problems and also to report back to her what the problems are. If there were problems out in the field (i.e., foster parents, foster children), she shoulders the full responsibility to make sure that the problems are addressed and resolved, or modify changes that are in the best interest of the children.
As a clinician, I work full time in a school and prn in the skilled nursing facilities. Being able to learn about the many topics of supervision throughout both semesters has been rewarding. Even though I have never supervised a student before, I will take the skills that I have learned and apply it into my work environment in the future. ASHA (2008) states an effective supervision facilitates the development of clinical competence in supervisees at all levels of practice, from students to certified clinicians. Clinical supervision is a collaborative process with shared responsibility for many of the activities involved in the supervisory experience. When supervising, I would collaborate with my supervisee(s) to make sure that we are one accord
In order to work effectively and appropriately with vulnerable and marginalised groups in society such as individuals with mental illnesses, it is fundamental for a social worker to have a comprehensive knowledge base and proficient skills.
Social Work is a career defined as “work carried out by trained personal with the aim of alleviating the conditions of those in need of help or welfare”. Social work varies in several fields, social workers work as part of multi-disciplinary teams with child welfare organizations, adoption and foster care agencies, hospitals, schools, prisons, mental health institutions, and more. Social work may leave the impression that it’s an easy field because it is assumed that all social workers do is serve others and manage paperwork but that is only a small chunk of the job. Social workers must deal with the ethical and emotional aspect of helping others. As a social worker, it is critical to comply with the National Association of Social Workers
While my supervisor is not a social worker, however, her job could easily be considered close. In classes such as Introduction to Social Work and Generalist Practice, we learn about the roles of a social work: educator, broker, advocate, and others. The Abused Adult Resource Center does advocacy and brokering work everyday. This week though they also fulfilled their role as educators by giving that training to the Foster Grandparents.
Abstract The roles of a social worker are many and although it may be seen to most as a simple profession, it is of great value. A social worker has to broaden his or her horizon to see things in a new perspective. One must be able to understand, empower and help individuals, families or groups to overcome some of lives most difficult obstacles. As a social worker you are supposed to be able to appreciate the perspectives of all parties involved.
A social worker’s field placement and internship experience are the uttermost integral component of his or her social work education. This experience can vary in both quantity and quality depending on the type of leadership and guidance the social worker is receiving. Supervisors play a fundamental role in the guidance and training of a new social worker during his or her internship. Having similar work styles as your supervisor can lead to a satisfying field placement experience.
Supervision in social work is defined by Barker (1999) as an administrative and educational process used extensively in social agencies to help social workers further develop and refine their skills, enhance staff morale, and provide quality assurance for the clients. The short term objective of supervision is to provide workers with the work structure and agency resources which help to increase workers knowledge and skills to do their jobs effectively and professionally. The long term objective of supervision is to provide clients the most efficient service possible, consistent with agency policies and procedures.
