“Elhamy, it is impossible!” “You will never get accepted into a specialty program!” These are words I have heard many times over the past few years. While I have been discouraged by my friends and colleagues from pursuing Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery in Canada due to the significant hurdles in achieving a residency position, I am determined to achieve this goal. “Never give up”, “Aim high” and “The sky is the limit”, are mottos that I live my life by. Determination and perseverance are two strengths that have helped me throughout my career. My determination has allowed me to complete all of the necessary Canadian licensing exams in less than one year. During my Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery clerkship rotation, I was amazed by the breadth and depth of the specialty. The uniqueness of this specialty is in that it blends the medical and surgical aspects into a single specialty. I observed patients with laryngeal cancer undergoing conservation laryngeal surgery with excellent voice, airway and swallowing functional outcomes. The next day, I had the opportunity to see children with severe to profound SNHL regain their sense of hearing after cochlear implantation. The precision required in our specialty is appealing to me and matches my attention to detail. …show more content…
This enabled me to be selected for the highly competitive residency in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Cairo University. Pursuing my passion for the field, I completed my M.Sc. Degree in 2009, and Ph.D. Degree in 2013. My previous training in the field not only prepared me to endure long working hours but also, gave me an opportunity to perform surgeries that saved lives. My Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery patients ranged from a neonate with choanal atresia to a 90 year old male with laryngeal
Watching my friends’ face quiver in disgust after recounting my experience of a videofluoroscopicy and my excitement from viewing the barium travel through the oropharyngeal and pharyngeal phases of swallowing, I realized I wanted to study the extraordinary field of Communication Sciences and Disorders. During my undergraduate career at East Carolina University, my anatomy and physiology class further fostered my enthusiasm for the field when discovering how intricate and complex it is for the human body to perform a simple task such as breathing and swallowing. I was able to utilize my thirst for knowledge of the human anatomy working in Dr. Perry’s Speech Imaging and Visualization Laboratory and enhance my writing skills by reviewing peer reviewed journal articles. Ultimately working and observing lab assistants create 3D anatomical models of the laryngeal mechanism, velopharyngeal mechanism, swallowing mechanism, skull and cranium,

Good interpersonal skills, the ability to take another person's perspective, and problem solving are crucial characteristics for a speech language pathologist. An article from the Journal of Nursing Education titled, “The Teaching Effectiveness of Standardized Patience,” demonstrated that interpersonal skills have overwhelmingly “positive, creative and meaningful results” in clinical environments (Becker, 2006). I am a powerful and positive Puerto Rican woman who is direct, uses I-statements, and possesses the characteristics needed for a speech language pathologist. I have always been quite comfortable with complex group dynamics, conflict management, collaboration, and all the varying degrees of human interaction. I have witnessed and experienced birth, death, trauma and joy throughout my college and post college career.
A medical practice that I have highly considered is general surgery. Both my grandfather and uncle are general surgeons, so the idea of following in their footsteps interested me greatly. Also, the idea of combining science and art, as doctors do, has always fascinated me and called me to this profession since a very young age. Like any doctor, the road to becoming a general surgeon is vigorous. “Surgery is a career for the committed. Much of your life is dictated by the demands of the operating room. The training is long and demanding. But for those who love it, a
What do males and females have in common, and what is the distinction between both genders? This question does not have an interpretation as there is an abundance of aspects, the points of view, opinions and more; but we can look at the different pieces of recommendation given to males and the generic suggestions. “If”’ by Rudyard Kipling and “The Paradoxical Commandments” written by Dr. Kent M. Keith encloses similarities and differences in the way the author’s grant information to their addressed masses, on the other hand, they are different in their targeted readers. “If” is male-dominated and is written towards males, while “The Paradoxical Commandment” is universal advice for everybody. Both compositions are similar in the
When undergoing the professional training needed to practice as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), we pride ourselves in “achieving and maintaining the highest level of professional competence and performance (ASHA Code of Ethics, 2016).” Even with the many clinical hours needed as a graduate student and the additional hours needed as a clinical fellow (CF), there are some areas in the scope of practice of an SLP one might not gain experience in. When applying for our first jobs in our field, SLPs should feel comfortable with the potential clientele we will be working with.
Otosclerosis is a unique bone disorder of the otic capsule and ossicles, that affects human beings only. Answer: The risk of developing schizophrenia is likely to be multifactorial with genetic and environmental factors interacting or acting alone. There was considerable research interest in finding a probable relation in between middle-ear disease and insanity at the beginning of twentieth century. A review article has been published by Bryant WS in which he has cited the authors from as early as 1890 who thought that ear disease itself could cause insanity and even secondary dementia1. Later, biologists have found that the left temporal lobe which lies directly above the middle ear has large impact in the neuropathology of schizophrenia. In the mid-1990s, a case
The desirability of paperless technology in clinics. An article written by the dental clinic in New York portrayed the benefits it had enjoyed by going paperless. Paperless orthodontic practice has been after nearly 17 years since computer technology was first incorporated into the orthodontic practice. Paperless orthodontic practice has paved way for a high level of efficiency, simplification of clinical activities, improvement of communications between patients and professional colleagues and finally the growth of the orthodontic practice. Enhanced communication abilities are one of the benefits that were featured in the article. The success of orthodontic practice heavily relies on excellent communication. This has been possible by the computerized
As a teenager, I read Doctors by Erich Segal and instantly, my love for medical sciences was born. Though, I was certain that I wanted to pursue a career in health sciences, dentistry was not always what I had in mind for a career. But it was my father’s dream and I decided to live it. In 2009, at the beginning of my first term in
If the ears, nose, and throat is what he/she is interested in, this department is also available. The Otolaryngology area requires a student to take classes in General Surgery along with one year in training. Additionally, this person would have to take three more years in Otolaryngology, followed by one year of elective
Some of the duties of a speech pathologist are, but are not limited to, evaluate patients’ levels of speech, language, or swallowing difficulty, identify treatment options, teach patients how to make sounds and improve their voices, work with patients to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow, and counsel patients and families on how to cope with communication and swallowing disorders (Duties, www.bls.org, 2015). ‘If the speech-language pathologists work in medical facilities, they work with physicians and surgeons, social workers, psychologists, and other healthcare workers’ (Duties, www.bls.org, 2015).
It is important for the new generation of otologists to be cognizant of the history
In stanza 52 the poet Whitman becomes the hawk. His voice is "untranslatable" and, in another famous phrase, a "barbaric yawp." This passage leave us with the sound waves in the air and with the vagueness of the grass under our feet. And he is thinking that he is not translatable from one bodily matter to another. The day seems to wait for him to get ready to move on. instead it leads him on into darkness. A metaphor for death could be the day ending. Also the notion that Whitman's hair has grown "white," and he fling his "locks" at the setting sun. He liquefy into the air, leaving like the air and melting his flesh in the "eddies" of water. When the body decomposes all of the memories and thoughts depart all the materials of self-identity.
Growing up in a rural community in northern Russia I was first introduced to the wonderful world of medicine by my father, who was a Neuropathologist by training but worked primarily as a Family Medicine physician in our small northern town. Having him as a role model, and the constant exposure I had to the medical profession and its virtues as a young boy, studying medicine was a natural evolution for me. After immigrating to Canada and with that determination in mind I set out to follow in my father’s steps by pursuing my higher education at Laurentian University in Sudbury where I obtained a B.Sc. degree in Biomedical Biology (Honors), and then successfully completing my M.D. degree program in the West Indies with numerous Medical Practicums in the USA.
