Throughout the play Othello written by William Shakespeare, readers (or viewers) learn that Othello’s wife Desdemona is innocent of the rumors that surround her. Desdemona is thought by her husband to have had an affair with his former right hand man, Cassio. Although many are too blame for these false rumors, one character’s actions stand out the greatest. This character is Othello. Although many would argue Iago is to blame for Desdemona’s fate, Othello’s immature and jealous nature ultimately led to the death of his beloved wife. Othello, being a strong and respectable man, could barely speak his mind and communicate with the one person he should have been the most comfortable with, his wife. Othello’s knack to hold onto his worries and allow this consumption to further was completely his own doing. Iago’s ideals troubled Othello deeply, even to the point of physical reactions: “My lord is fall’n into an epilepsy” (Oth. .4.1.61). Othello is so intensely affected by the possibility of his wife cheating on him that he has an epileptic fit. Internalizing and processing the pain he feels troubles Othello beyond compare. Despite the extreme feelings Othello possessed, he still remained complacent and allowed himself to fall deeper and deeper into an abyss of jealousy. In a normal and healthy relationship between two mature people, communication and trust are key. In this circumstance, Othello’s choice to not communicate and trust led to death. Although death is not a normal result of a relationship without communication and trust, Othello’s lack of conveyance was the contributing factor to his wife’s death.
