Orthopedic Surgeon Career

Podiatrists asses the condition of a patients foot, ankle or lower legs by reviewing his or her medical records, listening to patients concerns, and performing a physical examination. What interest me about this career is that they are also surgeons. I’ve been searching for a career that also includes doing surgeries on patients. To be a Podiatrist you have to complete four years of training in a podiatric medical school and two to three years of hospital residency training. This profession is my top choice at the time.

You are advised to enroll in a pre-med program while earning your bachelor’s degree. After you get your degree, you will need to graduate from a 4 year medical school. After you have graduated you will need to enroll in a 5 year residency program as the last requires step. After you complete your residency, you can chose to further your training and enter a fellowship program, and typically in your fellowship program you specialize in an orthopedic sub specialty. After all of the training and schooling, you will need to become licensed by your state to practice orthopedic

A typical day starts at 7 am, where he meets with the with department head/chief surgeon of the clinic, fellows, and residents for rounds where they discuss: past and upcoming surgical cases, patient status from prior surgeries, relevant lab results and imaging, clinical operations, and continuing patient care. He then organizes his schedule based on his patient’s needs and condition, his operating room (OR) schedule, and his naval obligations.

Throughout this project my intention is to learn about all my career and college options for my desired job which is a sports medicine physician. With this report I aim to learn as much as I can about that job because then I can make an educated decision whether or not I want to pursue this career. As I write this Career Research report I hope to learn what high school and college classes I need to take and how many years I need to attend college. UNMC is a very prestigious school and hospital. It is known for their accomplishments nation-wide. When this opportunity came, I had no choice but to take it. I am applying for the UNMC High School Alliance program to get more experience in the medical field. Being accepted in this program would help me in many ways, including getting accepted into colleges and possibly medical schools down the road. While attending this program, I would get a more in-depth, hands on, experience in the medical field. Throughout my internet research I have found that there are numerous characteristics which surgeons should have. These characteristics include being tactful, sensitive, flexibility, calmness and being dedicated to both their job and their patients, also having excellent hand eye coordination. Having the strength to deal with troubling circumstances and the physical strength to be able to use power tools for the majority of the day if needed.
