Love and loss is a powerful source of motivation for the characters of the Orenda. The unforgettable characters Joseph Boyden creates reveal what the human spirit is truly capable of surviving; each soul having to cope with the brutal loss of someone they love. The emotions that rise in those who experience tremendous love and loss both influence their actions and alter their personalities. These changes are clearly seen in the three main characters of the powerful novel. Bird, one the the Huron Nation’s greatest warriors, lost his family to the hand of their enemy many years ago. Despite so much time having passed, never do they leave his mind as he now lives only seeking revenge for their deaths. Christophe, a christian missionary in the new world, has left his family behind and devoted his life to bringing glory to the Lord. Through his faith, Christophe seeks to honor God. Snow Falls, a young Haudenosaunee girl, is kidnapped after having her entire family murdered before her. She struggles through many stages of anger, distress and uncertainty as she is forced to live as her captor’s new daughter. These three characters, each tremendously different from the other, were changed by love and loss. Their reality has made them who they are; through blood, faith and strength, they evolve as their worlds clash. Bird’s character was indefinitely changed by the death of his beloved wife and daughters. The pain and anger he felt created the wise yet ruthless warrior he is today.
Agnes’s spiritual ‘atonement’, helping to ‘guide her home’ is regularly influenced by the state of the weather and natural occurrences on the landscape. Agnes is offered two experiences of redemption in the novel. One being predominately religious, aided by reverend Toti and the other being sense of belonging and acceptance to a family. In this heavily Christian society, Agnes is given a ‘spiritual advisor,’ who takes on the responsibility to ‘save her.’ As Agnes’ begins to confide in Toti and learn to rely on him the weather gradually becomes increasingly ‘miserable’ rendering it difficult for the two to meet. At the climax of the novel, ‘travelling to Kornsa in this unfit weather’ has resulted in Toti’s ‘fever’ leaving Agnes ‘scared’ and deprived of her confidant. Despite Toti representing her divine redemption, the two form an alliance stemming from predominately companionship, demonstrated when Toti ‘forgot’ his New Testament at home when going to meet Agnes. Additionally, Agnes is emotionally redeemed when experiencing a sense of belonging at Korsna. Amidst the natural process of childbirth occurring in the landscape Agnes aids the ‘newborn’ by recognizing it is in ‘breach.’ This
Louie never was the one to break down and give up. The Bird took a huge toll on the way that Louie felt internally. The fact that Louie was brutally beaten, degraded, and dehumanized, Louie’s spirits remain unbroken. As a child, Louie always seemed to be a rule breaker and having some type of secret defiance. Louie kept a diary which to the guards, was a punishable offense . Louie wrote in the diary daily, while hiding it under the floor in his barrack. Throughout the novel, it is clear that Louie’s dignity is the most important thing enabling the men to survive. Although their bodies were broken, they refuse to allow their dignity to be taken away as well with their survival

One of my character in my book is Korinna is a thirteen old girl. she is a cheerful, life-loving, stubborn to honor her beloved Fatherland (a nickname for Germany). Germany she is an active member of the local Jungmadel, a Nazi youth group. Korianna is being taught to hate Jews, hate anyone that was "different", and to turn in information on anyone who was behaving as if they were not a "loyal" German. She believes that Hitler is helping the world by dealing with what he calls the "Jewish problem." When Korinna discovers that her parents are secretly hiding Jews in their house and helping them to escape the city, she is shocked. And her loyalties are put to an extreme test when a neighbor tips off the Gestapo. Korinna blames her parents for
Although Birdie’s sad story seems to be very tragic, it is not identical to the normal literary tragedies that we normally see. Usually, a tragedy is written with a heroic character and features characters acting out the roles of the story. Instead, Waxen Wings displays a girl who loves flying, but is caught up in a series of unfortunate events Unless the reader is also a lover or flying, it is
To start off, we will start to talk about Who is the caged bird and why. I think that according to the story, “The Long Walk Home”
To begin with, Louie Zamperini hated the Bird because of his constant abuse towards him. Some days, the Bird would be very aggressive with his abuse, but other days he barely did anything. However, the fact that Louie was taunted by the Bird every day at the camp can’t be forgotten. There were many times when Louie had the urge and willingness to fight back with the Bird, but he knew he couldn’t because it would result in a beating he would never forget. Due to the fact that Louie couldn’t fight back, he felt humiliated in front
The bird then returns to his former place in the cage, the speaker emphasizing the pain in the bird’s “old, old scars”, imparting that the bird has attempted to escape in this manner multiple times in the past. From the line in which the speaker says “And they pulse again with a keener sting,” which refers to the bird’s scars, the reader can assume that the “keener sting” is a fire in the bird’s wings fueled by determination to achieve freedom, and that the bird will continue attempting to escape relentlessly. The speaker states that he “knows why he beats his wing”, meaning that he knows the forces that can drive a creature to harm themselves in the process of trying to achieve something, and he has come in contact with those forces in his life.
What This Says About the Book: First, Louie forgave the Bird, next, Louie felt compassion for the Bird. But now, Louie has returned to where he suffered through the worst possible emotional and physical pain, and did not feel any of it return to him. It turns out that Louie’s “moment of pain” really did result in “a lifetime of glory.” It was nice to see the main theme introduced in the beginning of the book be concluded in the end.
Thus, through the initial impression of the man of the bird’s brave and challenging movements by the utilisation of poetic techniques, the reader is able to visualise the bird’s characteristic it inherits and gain a deeper understanding of nature and the impression of humanity distinctively.
The bird in the story represents someone who lost hope in receiving freedom. That concept is best shown in the story, “But the swallow no longer believes what people say”. The bird lost complete hope. The bird is promised that he will be taken care of, but each time he finds himself in the hand of a new owner. In each situation he begs to be freed but no one seems to understand him. The
Identities can be ripped away from people, but love can help people to regain it and realise who they truly are. In Richard Wagamese’s Indian Horse the native children’s identities are taken from them, and not all of them find it again. Saul’s own identity as an Ojibway is taken by the residential school and the impact of unfavourable circumstances; but with the love and support of his family and friends, he finds it again. The residential school and other negative influences cause Saul to lose his identity, which is the offset for his quest to regain it with help from his friends and family.
During Louie’s time at the POW camp, one guard, called the Bird, was out to get him. Louie showed resilience in this trouble by speaking up to avoid getting himself and others hurt.
Nydia is one of my favorite characters of the book. She is a young and blind slave who sells flowers for her owner. There are many qualities which she owns. Firstly, she dares to struggle with evildoers. For example, she went to Arbaces’s feast because her singing very well. “You may beat me, you may kill me, but I will not go to the house of Arbaces again” (20). She said she didn’t want to go again after the feast. Because she watched the bad things they did. Although her owner hit and scold her, she still insists on her principle. Secondly, she is a kind person. She loves Claucus who always helps her. Although she knows Ione and Claucus have already fallen in love, she just blesses them. What ‘more, she helped Ione escaped Arbaces and lead
Mrs. Bird can be described best as a virtuous woman. She is totally on the slavery issue. Apparently, the events that take place including the oppression, mistreatments, beatings and other forms of cruelty exerted on slaves doesn’t pass her unseen. She becomes unhappy and unsettled about this. Eventually, she takes the initiative to talk to her husband to convince him to do something. She hopes she can be able to bring change to her husband’s position in the government. The senator, who is also Mr. Bird is also portrayed as a well-meaning individual. He is sympathetic to the obliteration case, but his actions do not support his sentiments. He is complacent and tries as much as possible to seem to be somewhere where others of his class are.
