Oprah Winfrey lived most of her childhood in the ghetto and grew up to be the first female african american billionaire. Oprah attained her wealth and power after a life full of obstacles. Oprah Winfrey was born in the south and lived most of her childhood between there the ghetto in Milwaukee. Oprah then grew up to be on TV for over 30 years.
Oprah grew up living her life with her mother, grandmother, and her father. Oprah was born in Mississippi in 1954, and she was cared for by her maternal grandmother until the age of 6 (Oprah Gail Winfrey). Oprah’s mother was a maid and had to rely on welfare at times to support their family (Fry). Oprah was molested by her mother’s boyfriend and her uncle during time she was with her mother (King). After that Oprah acted out especially against her mother. While living with her mother Oprah constantly broke her mother’s rules, and had many outbursts including running away and staging burglaries at her home (King). Oprah became pregnant at the age of 14, and she gave birth to the baby prematurely. The baby died soon after birth (King). Oprah spoke at churches and events for a short period of time as a child, and she made up to $500 each public speaking engagement (Fry).She then grew up, and continued to work hard to open doors for her future. Oprah entered a beauty pageant for Miss Fire prevention, and she won being the first black winner of the pageant. Winning this pageant helped Oprah receive a scholarship to college (Fry). Oprah Attended Tennessee State University on a full scholarship (Oprah Winfrey). During her time at Tennessee State Oprah began working in television and radio (Oprah Winfrey).
