The United States for years has been a country full of opportunities. Because of the freedoms, the United States is a country full of many different types of people with their own cultures and different views of life. A reason for this is that, the United States is promoted as an interwoven country. The United States is the land of opportunities, but it can also be big in diversity and exclude others because of their culture or just because of the fact that people are not the same skin color. The color of one’s skin can also predict what opportunities people have in life. The United States may have a pluralistic society, but it can also be the most diverse country. Everyone in the United States no matter their culture or race wants to achieve the American Dream and has to go through a lot to achieve it but some more than others, for example, African Americans. This is because of our past history. Our history begins with slavery. Slaves were seen as people with no rights, so white folks thought blacks were unproductive citizens. Nowadays racism has grown, but slavery is illegal. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1963, eight white clergymen criticized him and other activists in an open letter in the local newspaper, and he decided to write back while in jail. Dr. King had started a new era a new way of protest that would change their way of life forever this letter had a powerful …show more content…
Nowadays there is still racism going on and there is still people fighting for their rights to improve their lives. The American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. But not all of them have an equal opportunity to succeed or prosper just because of their skin color. In a book called Raisin in the Sun it talks about an African American family in Chicago South Side sometime between World War II and present day. This family wants a better life like any family would and in the book the Grandma she is the head of the family and she bought a house in a nice neighborhood, a white neighborhood. As the story goes you can see how racism is still going on and how it affects the family and it limitates them from prosperity, even a white male that is the Welcomer of the community, tries to buy them from not moving to the community because they feel in danger because they are African Americans. “One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”― Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail. Dr. King its stating that people should not obey a law if it degrades your personality or race you should do what is right and fair and what makes you have a better life and prosper.
While many people view the achievement of the American Dream as the highest form of success, it is really a false reality built on an ongoing history of white supremacy and superiority. “The Dream” is one that is held by the willfully ignorant, those believing themselves to be white, and people who do not wish to reflect on the issues of race and discrimination transpiring in modern day society. As a result, “The Dream” is consequentially detrimental to the African American race.
In Martin Luther King Jr's I Have a Dream speech, King talks about how unequal the treatment between African Americans and whites were. His views America as a segregated country. In many instances, he talks about slavery and how oppressed the slaves were. King uses many anaphoras such as “Negro” and “inequality” to convey his ideas. One of his most repeated phrases and his most famous one is “I have a dream”, after which he talks of a country without any segregation or discrimination. During his speech, King says “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. He views America as one that is split. During that time period, there was segregation and discrimination. His dream involves an America that will be united where people can see each other as equals. This is the main idea behind speech. After each of these phrases, King says “I have a dream today”, which signifies that this is a big issue and needs to be resolved quickly. In this speech, King describes America as one that is divided, where the promise of equality is a lie.
The truth about American society is not pretty, and the facts prove it. According to the United States census Bureau, blacks are twice as likely to be poor compared to other races, and eight times as likely to be imprisoned. Blacks are also three times more likely to be convicted of drug violations than whites. Only 75 percent of blacks have received post-high school education, compared to 85 percent of whites. Not surprisingly, blacks on average also make less money than whites. As of yet, black people have not been proven to possess any kind of genetic deficiency therefore, racially speaking, there must be something wrong with our society which makes it complicated and mostly unrealistic today for people with different ethnicities, race, or color to achieve the American Dream.
With this world suffering from racism, race is a major obstacle in achieving the American dream. Throughout history, it is apparent that whites have an edge in obtaining the dream. This is because the major settlers of America were white. Also a majority of the American population consists of white people. African Americans and Hispanics still have a hard time in their survival let alone prosperity due to racism that causes them to need to work harder for seemingly less pay. This type of racism occurs when the people in power seek to
In 1963, Martin delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech to address these issues and changes needed to be made within the current society. In his speech, he claims, “We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their adulthood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating “For Whites Only.”” (Luther King Jr.). With this, Martin demonstrates how people of specific groups, in this case, black people, will have limited freedoms as long as prejudice continues to prevail in
Due to all the immigration from countries all over the world, America has become a place of diversity among many races and religions. Although, this diversity came with prejudice that has gotten better since the late 20th century, it is still alive today. America became a place for, as Maya Angelou would say, “The Tree, River, and Rock” or peace, security, wisdom, humanity, and freedom to all people regardless of their background. Because of this, the early 21st century has brought many new opportunities for people of all cultural backgrounds.
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” (Dr. King, Martin “I Have a Dream” Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. 28 August 1963). It has been fifty-one years since Dr. Martin Luther King J.R. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. It is evident that human beings who are considered to be African- American have made several outstanding achievements since the times of segregation; they have obtained the same suffrage rights, the same job opportunities, and many more privileges that were previously denied to them by their Caucasian counterparts. Though the people of African- American decent have come a long way
Diversity has been observed in different parts of the world especially the Unites States. Seemingly the country harbors different variations of people. The people are living in the US vary in terms of their cultures, norms, beliefs, behaviors and religions. Such variations make them lead unique lives from one another. The clip ‘Diversity and inclusion- Love has no labels’ vividly recounts about the issue of variation and the challenges accompanying the people living in a diverse society. The US has different cultural groups such as the Latinos, Blacks, Whites, and other races. Marginalized groups find the challenge of failing to get equal opportunities in life as their counterparts. Education, employment, and
Have you ever stopped to realize how fortunate we are to be alive in such a great country? America is built off an idea of liberty, together we are a diverse group. Our veterans fought for our country to stay free, and we shouldn’t take that for granted. Diversity is giving us an ability to be our own person. The ability to be different as a society and as a group is our gift.
America is the land of opportunity. As shown in placard A, “Getting Oriented”, the United States was seen by European colonists as a place for new chances and new beginnings, because of its unused lands and variety of resources. Another example of opportunity in the U.S. is seen in placard L named “The Fifties”, which shows a tremendous economic growth during the Nineteen-fifties. An economic expansion is not only good for the government, but for all citizens, since the more money the country has, the more jobs and opportunities the residents will have. The U.S. does not only give opportunities for those who live in their country, but for foreigners. During the Cold War, Americans delivered food and supplies to Berlin, Germany by plane, because
On July 19,1962, Martin Luther King gave a speech regarding the American Dream in the eyes of a black man. In the speech he states, “We are simply seeking to bring into full realization the American dream- a dream yet unfulfilled...a dream of a land where men no longer argue that the color of a man’s skin determines the contents of his character”. To this day, the dream is still unfulfilled; blacks still fight for impartiality and equality. Today, many blacks are still targeted as being criminals or are stereotyped immediately about where they live or what organizations they are a part of due to the color of their skin. A specific example, is when Jackie Robinson rose from all of the ghettos into becoming a wealthy individual, “of the Jackie Robinson elite, whose parents rose up out of the ghettos, and the share-cropping
The United States is composed of various races and we are all vastly different in every aspect, yet one’s diversity contrary to others comes at a price. Many lack the ability to be active members in a
Both Martin Luther King and our founding fathers have been pulling for the same idea for a long time. People are still fighting over equal opportunity to this day. The main news stories going on right now have to deal with police brutality towards minorities. In a way people are constantly working toward the “American Dream”. It’s an idea that people have been demanding since 1776. Not everyone’s idea of the American dream will be the same, but they will
The man known as Martin Luther King wrote his famed speech, “I Have a Dream” and took the world by storm. The response to this speech was filled with mixed emotions and it had every American contemplating their views. Kings purpose was to show that the black community was strong and that everything they were doing was worth everyone's time. He wanted to also motivate his community that they can make change happen and that their lives matter just as much as white people's. The entire idea of racism and unfairness during the 1960’s was the basis and subject of the speech. The subject of the speech is what brought talk and controversy to the entire speech as a whole. A line i feel left me with a dropped jaw states, “But 100 years later the negro
Work opportunities are a common reason people choose to migrate to a different country, especially the U.S. because of its job availability and economic security (Juniu, 2000). However, the type of work one acquires can either be detrimental to or improve his/her health and well-being. Work demands including strenuous and repetitive activities, and hazardous environments can result in stress and injury that will ultimately disrupt daily roles and routines (Gupta & Sullivan, 2008). Often immigrants face work related problems such as receiving less than minimum wage, obtaining jobs requiring a low amount of skill that is below one’s abilities and working long hours (Gupta & Sullivan, 2008; Scott et al., 2006; Stodolska, 1998). Therefore, these
