The United States for years has been a country full of opportunities. Because of the freedoms, the United States is a country full of many different types of people with their own cultures and different views of life. A reason for this is that, the United States is promoted as an interwoven country. The United States is the land of opportunities, but it can also be big in diversity and exclude others because of their culture or just because of the fact that people are not the same skin color. The color of one’s skin can also predict what opportunities people have in life. The United States may have a pluralistic society, but it can also be the most diverse country. Everyone in the United States no matter their culture or race wants to achieve the American Dream and has to go through a lot to achieve it but some more than others, for example, African Americans. This is because of our past history. Our history begins with slavery. Slaves were seen as people with no rights, so white folks thought blacks were unproductive citizens. Nowadays racism has grown, but slavery is illegal. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1963, eight white clergymen criticized him and other activists in an open letter in the local newspaper, and he decided to write back while in jail. Nowadays there is still racism going on and there is still people fighting for their rights to improve their lives. The American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. But not all of them have an equal opportunity to succeed or prosper just because of their skin color. In a book called Raisin in the Sun it talks about an African American family in Chicago South Side sometime between World War II and present day. This family wants a better life like any family would and in the book the Grandma she is the head of the family and she bought a house in a nice neighborhood, a white neighborhood. As the story goes you can see how racism is still going on and how it affects the family and it limitates them from prosperity, even a white male that is the Welcomer of the community, tries to buy them from not moving to the community because they feel in danger because they are African Americans. “One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”― Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail. Dr. King its stating that people should not obey a law if it degrades your personality or race you should do what is right and fair and what makes you have a better life and prosper.
