One of the most controversial issues today is the question of how to address childhood obesity. Because of the large proportion of meals that children, particularly low-income children, consume in schools, cafeteria food has been targeted by dietary reformers as in need of a major overhaul. However, while many different types of new school menus have been proposed, the extent to which healthier foods can be offered remains controversial. Opponents to reform state that children will not eat healthier lunches, and that changing the food that children eat will have minimal impact, since the children will either bring food from home or eat food at home that is more 'kid friendly.'

Unlike any other source, this one focuses solely on 3 organizations that advocate. However, there is no attempt to address the current issues of our system, requiring a previous understanding of how the school lunch system currently operates.

Students with special food allergies could leave campus during lunch and go to their homes and get food they could actually can eat and not be worried that their food could have been cross contaminated to something they're allergic to. For example students with celiac disease have a higher chance of getting their food cross contaminated. When cafeteria workers prepare food on a counter or cutting board either they can forget to wash it or they
The process to achieve open campus lunch benefits would involve security attendance, extension of lunch periods and student records. The students will have to go through a process to be able to continue the privilege of having open campus lunch throughout the year. The researcher will conduct a proposal to meet and talk with the Board of Education on behalf of student rights and lunch reform policy for the need of student involvement. The meeting is to consider if off campus lunch would be eligible to community high schools for productive upper class students. (Open campus, mountainvistaonline.org). Therefore, students could have a complete understanding of conduct regarding the educational rules and regulations that applies with an open campus policy. For instance, an explanation of proper designated times for lunch and departure from school grounds. An example would be the consequences of violation of policy from a student’s actions. Consequences would include a student receiving a disciplinary referral, suspension or expulsion depending on how severe the offense is. (U.S. Department of education “FERPA General Guidance for students” www2.ed.gov).
Finally, the staff members of Oak Creek High could have more time available to get done with their work. Teachers need the extra time to get organized and prepared for the next class they teach. They could go home and eat or go out to eat. Plus, they would have extra time to eat at their own pace. Everyone knows that the administrators have enough problems to deal with, so by having an open campus lunch their will be less students they have to watch over in the cafeteria during lunch hours. Just like the teachers, the administrators would also have more time to get more things done and eat their lunch.
Not only do both of the reasons above prove and show great examples of why or why not schools really should or shouldn't let school cafeterias be transformed into fast food courts supplied by fast food companies, in the end it's the school's themselves who make the choices to change the foods that they supply. Therefore here are three examples at which they can use to see if there school is even ready to make the leap toward fast food companies supplying lunches. First the school will need to be sure students can afford the lunches, second make sure the school can afford it as well, and thirdly the schools will need to have make sure the students are willing to go along with it. Although there is several more steps in which changing to a fast

Here at Hebron we have more than 2000 students on the main campus and our campus is far too small to accommodate that many students at once for lunch. We have very few lunch lines and all the lines are always packed full of people. And a solution to this would be to simply allow students to go off campus for lunch, with restrictions however of course. I believe that only Juniors and Seniors with a car should be allowed to go off campus for lunch. As most sophomores are fairly new drivers and including them would be too much traffic to handle in the parking lots. With the the addition of off campus lunch you would solve a multitude of problems at once and make things easier for you and the school staff.
Children in America are faced with different choices every day. Some of these choices can be either good or bad for them. But these children don't really know the consequences of their actions, but the school does. Schools are serving unhealthy and un properly cooked meals to children every single day. These food companies make big money from these schools because the schools just buy the lunches so the kids will eat something. The schools don't really care what goes into the students stomachs, but as long as the school meets the requirements it's okay. Then the students just eat it because it looks and taste good, but they don't have an idea of what their eating is made out of or where it has been before. The government needs to start making school lunches more healthy for these students, if not then then unfortunately the number of obese children will rise.
Everyone loves the idea of a government that truly cares about him or her. Especially a government that would go so far as to layout a healthy diet plan to insure the health of your children and to battle childhood obesity. It is great that the government is concerned about adolescent obesity and the nutrition students receive at school. However, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Food and Nutrition Guidelines provide more problems for schools and they need to be eradicated, as well as repealing the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.
An open campus lunch program is when, during the lunch period, students are permitted to leave campus and get lunch from local businesses or even home. At Urbana High School we currently have four lunch shifts, during which students pack or buy lunches. I believe Frederick County Public Schools should start an open campus lunch program for seniors because the school lunches are not healthy enough or appealing and do not have enough lunch options. The benefits that could come from this program go beyond the happiness of the seniors, they will reach the classrooms, staff members, and community.
What do you do during your school day? Do you space off when you’re in class? Do you wonder why you're in a class you don’t need to graduate? Most students do this is why I think we need open campus. By having open campus this will allow students to unwind, work on homework, and show responsibility.
In numerous incidences around the country schools have reportedly denied their students school lunches because their lunch accounts are overdrawn in some cases by only a couple dollars (Green). Also, traditional packed lunches are under fire, in part, because some administrators who feel that the lunches are not nutritious enough for students have banned them (Eng, Hood). Because some school children are going hungry and have no other means of obtaining a meal during the school day, the school lunch program needs to take additional measures to ensure that the needs of all US students are being met.
When it comes to schools the district does whatever it cam to keep the students safe. By setting rules the students are to follow. Rules such as, dress code, attendance, classroom procedures, and more. All indended for one reason and that is to protect the students.
