Personally, websites like “A Parent’s Guide to Internet Safety” and shows like “To Catch a Predator” are a powerful asset/tool to the community because they give information to keep children protected online. The problem is that people don’t utilize the knowledge of these shows/websites until it is too late. I feel that the effectiveness of these websites/shows is based on how people utilize the resources. If people aren’t aware of these resources and prevent measures then these websites/shows don’t seem effective but if you they are aware of them, these resources can turn into a powerful asset to combat online predators. I feel that the first line of defense to protect children from sexual predators online is the parents. Parents need to be aware of what their children are searching online and who they are communicating with. Parents can accomplish this by placing passwords on computers, limiting the amount of time a child is on a cellphone or a computer, and monitor their online activities. …show more content…
For example, in 1998 the Child Online Protection Act was implemented to “criminalize online commercial distribution of material deemed harmful to minors” but was never placed into effect because it faced First Amendment challenges. In addition, in 2009 the Adolescent Web Awareness Requires Education (AWARE) Act was introduced but denied because it was facially invalid. http://ncac.org/resource/a-timeline-of-legislation-aiming-to-protect-youth-online. With regards to privacy advocates criticizing sites and shows for violating people’s privacy, I feel that child predators lost their privacy rights when they violated the privacy of a
According to guardchild.com, 17% of teens surveyed stated that they received an email or an online message with photos or words that made them feel uncomfortable, and only 7% of parents were aware of this. In an article titled “The Undercover Parent” by Harlan Coben, it explains about the idea about parents using spyware on their children. Everything a child types can already be seen by the world, even pedophiles or online bullies. Coben supports the idea; however, he feels that showing the article to a child is better because it can lead to a to a conversation about concerns the parents may have. Parents should monitor their children’s online behavior because they want to keep their children safe from cyber bullies and pedophiles.
Of the many problems faced by children and adolescents, few provoke such moral outrage as childhood sexual abuse. Many times, as on the television show “To Catch a Predator”, such abuse can be inflicted by strangers who may gradually become familiar with the child online. Sadly, however, often times the perpetrator of sexual abuse on children is someone much more familiar to the child- someone the child may even love.
Coben states the dangers, “First, we’ve all heard about the young boy unknowingly conversing with a pedophile.” You may hear that an internet predator approached or kidnapped a child on the news, but as a parent you will assume its not happening to your child. Kids, teenagers, and their parents can’t tell an internet predators until it's too late. According to Pure-sight, “ 100 percent of the cases, teens that are the victims of sexual predators have gone willingly to meet with them. Also teens are willing to meet with strangers: 16 percent of teens considered meeting someone they've only talked to online and 8 percent have actually met someone they only knew online”
Finally, there is nothing easier or faster than making connections with someone who you knew long time ago through social media. Many social media sites are being created regularly that allow people to connect and interact over the Internet. However, the advancement of today’s social media has also increased the activities of pedophiles due to the communication that social media allows. Online predators have gained access to youngsters, ever since people started using social media extensively. According to Fox News, “The world’s largest pro-pedophilia advocacy group uses Facebook to connect with its members throughout the world; to find and exchange photos of children; to hone its members' predatory behaviour; and to identify,
Educate your children - Be clear about the kind of personal information your children should not divulge over the Internet, including their names, addresses, and phone numbers. Teach your children what to do if a stranger approaches them online. Monitoring software will allow you to monitor, chats, emails, website visits, and internet searches so you can keep informed silently. Specifically, tell children to cut off communication with any person they don't know and to notify you
From an early age I have frequently questioned who I am. I, obviously, am the daughter of Chris Dudley and Donna Terrill. I am a quiet girl from South Carolina with brown hair and glasses. These things make me who I am, but at the same time do not. Over the years I have come to realize that who I am really isn’t about who I am right now or who I am physically, but about who I want to be.
With the creation of computers and Internet, high-tech crimes are occurring more frequently than few decades ago. According to a report made by the U.S. Department of Justice; “one in five children (10 to 17 years old) receives unwanted sexual solicitations online” (Knetzger & Muraski, 2008). One of this online sex-crime against children is known as child enticement. The Florida statute 847.0135 states that an individual is involved in online child enticement when “[…] utilizes a computer on-line service, Internet service, or […] to seduce, solicit, lure, or entice, or attempt to […] a child or another person believed by a person to be a child to commit any illegal act […] relating to sexual battery […]” (Knetzger & Muraski, 2008). Therefore, online sex-crime investigators must use the appropriate protocols during an investigation to avoid a lawful criminal defense based on law enforcement entrapment.
The internet has become so helpful and useful about keeping the public alerted and informed on their surrounding as well as their children’s surrounding. The internet is now the primary source for finding for finding information on any registered sex offender no matter where they might be. The sex offender registry was created the public about sexually predators that might live in any area. The registries increase the
In today’s society of internet sex crimes being broadcast on the evening news and 60 Minutes doing specials at least once a month. Are we paying enough attention to other sexual crimes and problems, such as the laws pertaining to juvenile sex offenders and their victims? Could more be done to help and protect the perpetrators, victims and their families?
Do you feel safe sending your children out in a neighborhood with registered sexual offenders? Is the government doing enough to protect our children and ourselves from these dangers? In 2003 78,188 children fell victim to forms of sexual abuse (Finkelhor). We should be protecting our children, “1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience some kind of sexual assault in their lifetime, also 67% of sexual assaults have victims under the age of 18,” ("Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Website."). Nationwide, sex offenders were four times more likely to reoffend, and be rearrested for a sexual related crime. Because the recidivism rate is so high, and because we must protect our citizens, sex offender laws should remain strict.
World War 1 was known as the Great War, it was a global war that was taking place in Europe, which began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. The war started from many various factors that were taking place before hand. Some of those things were nationalism, imperialism, the alliance system and the assassination of the ambassador. The United States of America also had many different factors that contributed to it joining the war, and although they have many reasons why they joined the war, some say that the zimmerman note was the main cause for the U.S to join the war. When the war started and the U.S joined the war, back home we had many economic, political and social changes. World War 1 was started from different factors but
Since there has not been a ruling in this case, the supporters of the censorship laws had to try and find a way to get the internet censored to children. So in the year 2000, Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act, which is aimed at the computers in the schools and libraries that the children would have access to. This law was limited to "only the schools and libraries that participated in certain federal programs such as, receiving federal money for technology". The schools and libraries that received this money were required to "install filtering software on all internet terminals to block access to sites with child pornography, obscene material, and material that is harmful to minors". My opinion on this law is that it is even better than the firs one. They are very similar, as you can tell from their names, there is very little changed in the names of the laws. I think that the sites that a minor can look at should be filtered. This way they cannot look at things that can be harmful to them.
The topic of random drug testing has been a very controversial one, especially in the last few years. RSDT (random student drug testing) made a rise in popularity after being legalized by the United States Supreme Court in 2006. This ruling made testing students who participate in extracurriculars or drive to school able to be tested for illegal drug abuse. This court decision is like many others in the aspect that some strongly agree and others heavily disagree. One side of opinions agrees with the court 's ruling and believes that RSDT programs help prevent drug abuse among the student population. Other people think that the programs infringe on the rights of students and offer no usefulness in the fight against
Even with the dangerous developments in social media over the past several years, many parents have chosen to allow their children to use these sites despite age restrictions. There are three reasons to argue for age restrictions on social media sites: lack of supervision by parents, targeting of children by pedophiles, and the prevalence of children falsifying their age. The ability of pedophiles to conceivably target children with social media proves that this is an issue that parents need to examine so that they may better protect their children. The threat from pedophiles causes an enormous problem for millions of children on social media sites. Unfortunately, Western Daily Press states that “Pedophiles can get away with grooming young teenagers on social media sites.” My essay will argue that age restrictions need to be in place, and additional regulations should ensure that law enforcement agencies have the tools required to supervise underage children 's use of social media, including Facebook and Twitter. Quoting from Business Wire, “three out of four parents feel that social network sites are not protecting children.” According to Irish Independent, “four out of ten children falsify their age” when using social media. I will also argue that additional research on this topic can be used to raise the awareness of parents, and can also help to alert the children themselves to the danger. My essay will also examine questions, such as: How can social media sites protect
Some parents are not aware of dangers of internet that brings to their children particularly making friends through internet. For example, their children might get cheated with someone else on internet and their children will not tell what happen to them when they encounter danger. According to BBC News, a 47 year old man defrauded a 13 year old girl online and asked to meet face to face. Luckily, the girl’s mother found out beforehand or else her daughter might be in danger. From this news, we can see that there internet friends are not always honest and they are more likely to consider as un-trustful strangers. Therefore, parents should concern more about their children, teach them about the dangers of making friends on internet, and avoid them from going out with a stranger.
