Learning Across the Lifespan is a class that I initially only took because it was a required course for online learning. Here I am at week 8 and I must say that this was the most beneficial course that I have taken during my college career.
The topic in this course that I found most rewarding was Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The 7 Habits include, Be Productive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw. (http://www.stephencovey.com/7habits/7habits.php) Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People are held in high regards because at the start of my online learning, I wasn’t very sure of myself. I’ve always wanted to enroll back in school but I didn’t know where to start. I took a leap of faith and enrolled at Post University. Without even knowing it, I was following Covey’s Habit #1 and Being Proactive. I had to take responsibility of my life and realize that nothing was going to happen on its own. Habit #2 helped me in another class that I’m taking here at Post University. One of my professors had given me a grade lower than I was expecting. I emailed her and asked why I had received the grade I did when I had worked so hard on the assignment. She reassured me that if I stayed focused on the grading goals that I had set for myself, I would reach them. That is a true example of Beginning with the End in Mind. Throughout my time here at Post,
Soon after death, anywhere from two to six hours after passing, an event called rigor mortis begins. Rigor mortis is the third stage of death. Rigor mortis is the stiffening or tensing of muscles after death. It is what causes a deceased person's eyelids to open. Rigor mortis is caused by the contraction of muscles in the body immediately after death. It starts with long, narrow bundles of cells that form muscle tissue. These cells build up electric potential by actively pumping out calcium ions. A neuron will release a signal, and when the muscle cells receive it, they open up the calcium channels in their cell membranes. The calcium ions will then rush out through the cell membranes due to the difference in voltage inside and outside of the cell. “Calcium ions will interact with actin and myosin filaments to cause muscle contraction.”(Source 6) Muscles will remain contracted, or in a contracted state, until ATP binds to myosin. When ATP binds to myosin, it releases the myosin and actin from each other, causing the muscles to release. However, when a person is dead they can no longer produce ATP, therefore, the muscles stay clenched. This causes the body to have a sickly stiff appearance. After the muscles have stiffened, the body moves on to the next stage of death.
Over the summer, I read a book titled, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Convey. The seven habits described in this book were being proactive, Beginning with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize, and sharpen the saw. The first habit Being proactive means not to make choices on impulse. it means to evaluate the situation before making a desicion. for example, two years ago when i had friends that talked behind my back i just moved on and found better friends rather than be mean to them or excluding them out of my way. The second habit Beginning with the end in mind means to think ahead at what your goals are and start working towards them. My goal for the eight grade year was to recieve a 95% or higher score in all of my classes. in order to realize this goal i worked hard through the year on assignments and and sometimes did more than what was expected of me during projects. in the end, though,
Reflection 1 Learning about family policy while doing service learning can provide those participating in service learning with demographics and background information on families and communities. The importance of those doing the service learning and the community collaborating is to get an idea of what is going on in their community that results in using the services provided by family policies. Learning about family policies can help me to understand what services can be provided to families. It can also help me understand what requirements are needed to qualify for certain services. It can be beneficial doing service learning because it can provide me with the opportunity to gain real world understanding and connections.
Restful Haven Nursing Home was a 1980’s two-storey brick building, reminiscent of a shabby low budget hotel in which couples, married but not necessarily to each other take pleasure in brief clandestine dalliances. It sat just off a busy roundabout and the service road leading to it also offered access to a Travel Lodge, a huge One-Stop garage and a McDonald's. However, it would be a mistake to imagine that the home's position, implied an ongoing inclusivity in society for the people who found themselves resident there. For whilst on the whole the hotel guests, travellers and food connoisseurs could still conceptualise a speculative life span ahead of them the residents at Restful Haven were no longer afforded that luxury. On arrival, for the lucid ones at least, there was an unspoken recognition that it was almost certainly a one-way journey, to be embarked upon slowly, worn out joints and trepidation each on their part vying for supremacy. However, once those and all other earthly afflictions had been finally cast aside, they mostly left the home at high speed in a vehicle with blacked out windows whose graphics
In the self-improvement book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, author Stephen R. Covey presents an integrated and principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional issues and problems. Covey uses real life examples as well as his own experience to reveal a step-by-step way for living with integrity, honesty, and self-respect. In the book he explains principles that give someone the comfort to adapt to change and the wisdom to take control and full advantage of the opportunities that the business world and personal lives create. This book seems very useful and I found a few habits that I plan to adopt and work at including in my everyday life. They are basic things in everyday life that can make things easier, more
The word “community” can be used in various contexts. In this case, I will use it to describe what I experienced throughout the quarter as a Learning Assistant. Furthermore, I will discuss several aspects of what I saw in the Learning Assistant (LA) program.
Tutoring these courses including six other biology and chemistry courses, highlights my proficiency in this competency.I acquired this competency by completing over 10 laboratory sections for different sciences course, including physics, biology, and chemistry. As a paramedic instructor, I also have experience conducting laboratory skill stations for students. These laboratory stations consist of a variety of procedure and assessment
The seven habits of highly effective people range from being proactive to finding synergy in one’s life. While reading this book I took some notes about the habits and I came upon two that I feel I could make use of to better my life professional as well as personally. Habit number two “Begin with the end in mind” and habit number seven “Sharpening the saw” stood out to me as areas that I could work on. The premise of each is fairly simple and applying them to my own life and career is are steps I can see myself adding to my daily routine.
During this semester, I have done various work such as reading and writing. This work includes reading articles from the book and writing essays. Some of the work I did was a challenge at the beginning, but I was able to persist and overcome those barriers. During the time I been in this class, I have learned many important strategies that have helped me improve in various ways. One major method that has improved my academic skills and quality in education have been the use of the Habits of Mind. During this semester I have had many struggles, but having a positive attitude towards the strategies and Habits of Mind has improved my academic intelligence. The knowledge I have learned these past days, have been extremely important that I am planning to use them in the future in order to succeed and accomplish my goals.
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service-learning is defined as, “learning that occurs in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement” (Flecky & Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to the community members
‘Strategies for Lifelong Learning’ has been unexpectedly and therapeutically revealing. Throughout our correspondence we’ve shared personal, and professional challenges, and wins. In doing so, I’ve come to realize strengths and areas for improvement, which is why I chose to discuss the second habit from the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, titled; ‘Begin With the End in Mind’.
During my time in 4H I have learned many things that I wouldn’t of be able to learn if I hadn’t joined Valley Pacers 4H club in 5th grade. I used to be shy to play the piano in front of people I didn’t know or that I didn’t have to live with. I can remember when we would have guest for dinner and my mom would ask me to play the piano for them. Whenever she had the chance to show off my piano talent. Sometimes I would tell my mom that I would play for them later, but I always ended up getting out of it. I just wasn’t confident enough. Even if I did decided to play I would be worried of messing up.
In today’s society women and girls are pressure to worry about their body sizes. Females think they have to be petite. Women and girls should not have to be pressured about their body weight. The pressure about their body weight comes from either girls are getting bullied about their size , trying to fit in , or even think their weight isn’t good enough for an relationship. Women need to stop pressuring their self about their body size and just be happy. Always remember beauty come in any size and form.
Collaborative learning is founded on the idea that the learning process is a naturally social act which requires the participants to talk among themselves. Collaborative learning involves small groups of students who act on a structured learning activity to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product. In simpler terms, the students work in groups to learn or understand a new concept they are studying. In this learning approach, it is important to understand that the students are accountable for individual work as well as the group work they do as a group in collaborative learning
I believe that true learning requires much more than simply listening to a lecture, reading from a book, or watching a video. While these all may be involved in the process of learning, hands-on experience and a real desire for knowledge of the subject are needed to truly learn.
