Here we are again! By this time you have probably gotten your bearings and things are moving smoothly along. I am sure you've met just about everyone at your school who will be important to you, and you've probably dealt with deans, counselors, and the like. Lesson Five: Find out who at your school can help you, what exactly they do. Be realistic in the help you seek. More and more people are now looking to the internet when it comes to finding a mate. With so many dating sites available and so many available singles, one could possible get confused on how to handle online dating. If you're an online dating rookie, read these survival tips for socializing with people online and even meeting in person. Keep it Real: While there are tons of people that lie online when trying to find a mate, don't be one of them! Always tell the truth about everything! This doesn't mean you have to tell your whole life story; however, if you're serious about meeting someone that's not into playing games, you can't play any games either! Keep it real by holding a honest conversation. If you're choosing just to play around with online dating, say whatever you want, however if you wish to meet someone in person, stick to telling the truth, it will make everything run a lot smoother. Never Tell Your Exact Location: When you're looking for someone to date online, you should never tell your exact location. While online dating can be full of fun, there are also many horror stories. Never, Never tell anyone your exact location of where you're at. Sure you may tell them the city and state you live in, however, never name an exact location to where you are at that point in time, this can be extremely dangerous if you don't really know the person you're talking to on the other end of the computer. In this age of teacher accountability and shoestring budgets, we art teachers know our heads are often first to roll when the chopping block comes out. Data walls, benchmark tests, and newly adopted Common Core Standards in 45 states can make just surviving the job overwhelming. As you prepare to make school-sanctioned messes with this year's crop of budding student artists, here are some simple ways to incorporate "keeping your job" into your daily routine. If you put them into practice, you may find, like I have, that they also make doing the job more fun. 1. Become a Consultant Make yourself an essential part of the support system for teachers in all subjects. I like to set the tone for this by offering my services during one of the staff-wide gatherings during pre-planning. I take a moment to introduce myself and let my colleagues know that I'm available to help them brainstorm creative ways to approach learning goals in their classrooms. I tell them where the art room is and list some of the supplies that they're welcome to borrow-I keep a separate stash for lending so that it never creates hard feelings if things don't come back. 2. Collaborate Reinforce your willingness to brainstorm with other teachers by approaching them first.
