In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Beautiful and Damned, the main character of Gloria, Anthony’s wife, and Dot, Anthony’s mistress represents Fitzgerald 's wife, Zelda. The way that Anthony meets Dot, as well as the personalities and the lives of these women are very similar to Zelda Fitzgerald. Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 novel The Road is a story about how McCarthy believes the world will be after a disaster that kills millions of people. The book follows the lives of a man, known as Papa, and his son, known as the Boy. It is about their journey to find the other good guys, and how they survive in a world filled with starvation, pain, and death. In The Road, many people die. The two most important deaths are of the Boy’s Mother and Father. The two very different ways they die shows how death is accepted by various people and what they are feeling when they die. McCarthy uses death as a method of portraying how people felt about dying, and how it impacts the way that they are feeling when they die, and how it motivates them to live.
According to Marian Erickson, “Most of life is choices, and the rest is pure dumb luck.” Real people’s lives depend on this quote everyday, which leads to the outcome of each problem individuals face. In the passages, characterization of the main personas helps one understand the theme. Conflict and symbolism also help lead to the overall idea that life is not always guaranteed to be full of success. The book The Other Wes Moore, the poem “If,” and the informational text “The Art of Resilience” all share a common theme of how choices and luck contribute to the success of life.

From the numerous short stories read and discussed during the course of this semester I chose to analysis and exemplify “Powder” by Tobias Wolff, “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver and “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway. The protagonists of each short story start with closed off habits; they are close minded and mentally strict on certain criteria. The main characters go through a learning process where they are taught substantial features for their development from an influential character or themselves. Learning significant life lessons from illuminating experiences is a common recurring theme demonstrated amongst the stories. These lessons vary, in The Hills Like White Elephants” a woman is self-taught to become dominant and take a stand on her own feet. In “Powder” the young boy learns how to take risks, have fun and make his own paths by his father. The story “Cathedral” presents a self-awakening of the narrator’s ignorance from the drawing activity instructed by the blind man Robert. The protagonist’s opinions of their teachers and themselves change throughout the course of the stories. The inspirational characters that enlighten the story tellers are found to be more fascinating than first anticipated. The narrators learn these characters hold great importance to deficient aspects of themselves.
Careless actions cause accidents everyday, such as car crashes, broken bones, or more seriously, death. These actions cause a ripple effect, not just affecting the lives of the decision maker, but the outcome of the decision may affect more than just the immediate people involved. In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacob’s, the main character, Mr. White, carelessly wishes on a talisman in hopes of improving life for his family and himself, but instead he ends up creating a hellish life because of his own carelessness that neither he nor anyone else should reverse. In the beginning of the story, the members of the White family are closely-knit and in their warm, cozy house and this initially sets the mood of the story allowing the reader
During the Roaring Twenties, writer F. Scott Fitzgerald composed the classic American novel known as The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald has some problems along the way, “his drinking became an increasing problem” (Bowers 10). Which it lead his debts score to increase. The fictitious narrative retells the journey of Jay Gatsby as he chases his one true love and faces many obstacles and interruptions along the way. Hopeless romantic is a term that would highly describe Gatsby as well as Fitzgerald. In fact, Fitzgerald is madly in love with a wealthy neglecting girl named Ginevra who is undoubtedly the inspiration behind many of his female characters. In a daze of strange innocence, the two meet at a sledding party in his hometown and soon began corresponding through writing letters. Daisy got married to a wealthy socialite named Tom Buchanan, resembling when Ginevra got engaged and soon married Bill Mitchell. The love for her is still extremely emotional that “Fitzgerald constantly begged her to reveal her inmost thoughts and details of her past” (Smith). Ginevra is Fitzgerald 's first love and it is clearly not an immaculate love story as Ginevra drifted apart from him, comparable to Daisy and Gatsby’s situation. Gatsby throws enormous parties, hoping his one true love appears one day. Jordan and Nick hear all kind of rumors about Gatsby and they go on to do research. Gatsby and Daisy finally reunite again with Daisy at Nick’s house for a tea. Eventually

Life lessons can be found in stories that are written, for example “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The main characters in this story is the the wife and husband. Before I dove into this book, I read the liner notes to gather a little information on what the book was about, so that I had a little understanding of what to expect. Just from the liner notes I could tell that this was going to be an interesting read because Anderson Cooper was the author, and he tells different stories that he has experienced while being a correspondent. I did not watch a lot of the news like CNN or Fox, but from the little bit I did watch I remember being intrigued by whichever story Cooper was telling.
In any experience or situation, people gain just that, experience. An experience will change and shape a person for better or worse. In each of our personal lives we will experience things unlike any other that will contribute to who we are and how we live. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, a boy named Pi becomes stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. Throughout this book Pi learns how to survive and to coexist with the tiger. Through Pi’s experience, he learns a new appreciation for the small things in life, and for the gifts of god.
