On the day of President Trump’s Inauguration, Time reporter Zeke Miller wrote that a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. had been removed from the Oval Office. He retracted the statement a few minutes later and apologized for making a mistake. Miller’s apology was ignored by many, including President Trump. A day later, in a speech given to the CIA, President Trump accused Miller of false reporting. “So Zeke, Zeke from Time magazine writes this story about ‘I took down’ — I would never do that because I have great respect for Dr. Martin Luther King. But this is how dishonest the media is.” By accusing Miller of false reporting, President Trump was accusing the reporter of spreading what became commonly known during the 2016 presidential …show more content…
For instance, only weeks before election day, it was reported that Clinton was part of a child sex trafficking ring run out of a Washington D.C. pizza restaurant. This became known as “Pizzagate” on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Quickly, the story moved from social media to mainstream television and print media, especially when Clinton was required to respond to questions regarding the story. According to Angie Holand in an article entitled “PolitiFact’s 2016 Lie of the Year: Fake News,” Clinton “emboldened her detractors and turned off undecided voters with a lawyerly parsing of facts that left many feeling that she was lying.” Pizzagate is only one example of a story not based on fact that Clinton was called to address. While the story was clearly fiction, it gave people who were already suspicious of her another reason to doubt her character to be president of the United States. The Trump campaign was also the subject of fake news. A viral tweet sent from an election rally claimed that thousands of Trump supporters were chanting racist messages. The tweet read, “I am at a Trump rally in Manhattan, and thousands are chanting ‘We hate Muslims, we hate blacks, we want our great country back’. Disgusting.” This fed into the ongoing story that Trump is racist and anti-Muslim. It was later reported by
The Hillary Clinton campaign for president in 2016 has been plagued by conspiracy theories that are used as attacks by Donald Trump supporters. For decades the Clinton family has been in the eyes of the public. Ever since some of the mysterious aspects of Bill Clinton’s presidency have come forward, the Clintons are never far from a conspiracy theory. Though some of these theories may be a little hard to believe, in most cases there is strong information to support these claims. There are different aspects of the Clinton’s lives that conspiracy theorists like to target. Some examples are the Clinton body counts, or the people supposedly killed by the Clinton’s, theories on the health of Hillary, and The Reptilian Elite. There are all kinds
An idea explored heavily in the documentary is the role of media in Presidential elections. Newspaper headlines are shown throughout the film, showing where Clinton was in the race. Media is crucial in shaping public opinion in an election and a lot of the campaign strategies depicted in the film concern promoting positive media representation of Clinton. A tactic used to control the media was to try to dig up information on opponents in order to cast them in a bad light. The film shows the Clinton campaign dealing with the Gennifer Flowers scandal early in the film. Flowers, a model and actress, came forward during the 1992 election campaign claiming that she had a 12 year relationship with Bill Clinton. These allegations
“Dissecting the #PizzaGate Conspiracy Theories”, written by Gregor Aisch, Jon Huang, and Cecilia Kang, examines and disproves the incident. By describing the #PizzaGate affair in detailed and objective manner, the article shows not only how to refute the claims of the fake news effectively but also how the fake news spreads and builds up its size throughout the online community.
In examining the political life of Bill Clinton, five major scandals stick out: his draft record; Gennifer Flowers and Infidelity; the Marijuana controversy; Whitewater; the Lewinsky Affair. Any one of these scandals could easily – and have on numerous occasions– ruin a political career. Yet, in each of these episodes Clinton was unusually adept at surviving and restoring his image.
The sex scandal involving president Clinton showed that a president would go to great lengths to cover up a scandal, even if it meant lying under oath. For a short time period the office of the presidency became a joke among many Americans, this event
Think. Think about the many hours you have ever spent trying to solve a puzzle or riddle. Think about how that conundrum challenged you, how it would burn in the back of your mind, until you finally solved and revealed the answer. But it is not the answer to the question that is most intriguing, it is the pieces of insight or information that led you there. In any significant historic event, such as the tragic terrorist attack on the Twin Towers or the even the moon landing, there is almost always a conspiracy theory, following not far behind. Individuals usually attempt to contemplate the “true” reasoning behind WHY or HOW each major historic American event occurred, much like that puzzling conundrum. But the key questions to solve the riddle still remain. What information led us to this solution? Can it be trusted? The “CNNPolitics” Website article titled, “The new birthers: Debunking the Hillary Clinton health conspiracy” by reporter Gregory Krieg, explores just that, the information. The article examines the unending debate about, Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton’s health that was alleged by her opponent Donald Trump. Before joining CNN in November 2015, Gregory Krieg was a senior political reporter at Mic.com, where he helped lead the site 's coverage of the 2014 midterm elections and the start of the 2016 presidential primary season. Prior to that, Krieg was a reporter and producer for ABC News for eight years, covering everything from the 2008 and 2012
Fake new became a popular topic in news regarding politically aligned news channels and outlets. For example, YourNewsWire is an online news outlet based in Los Angeles. Based on this website, Hillary Clinton’s victory in the popular vote was due to voter fraud of 25 million votes (Kosoff). YourNewsWire used evidence of an investigation the NPR, National Public Radio, conducted. Though the article’s claim of voter fraud seemed compelling, as evidence was to support the argument was supple. Yet the evidence was incorrectly used. The NPR was involved in this investigation of voter fraud, but only published the information as Pew Research Center conducted the analysis of credibility. Another piece of falsified data is that the investigation was not conducted as a means to discredit Hillary Clinton’s victory in the popular vote, as the investigation was completed in 2012, prior to Clinton and Trump’s campaign for office. This is only one example of skewed stories and biased articles. The creators of YourNewsWire, Sean Adl-tabatabai and husband, Sinclair Treadway, were politically aligned with Bernie Sanders for the 2016 election (Baum). The reputation that YourNewsWire has created for itself has plummeted. Google no longer supports this website with ad-sponsored money, and other accredited websites, such as Snopes, investigate the validity of news articles such as these and discredit their findings
The spread of fake news can be detrimental and life altering without checking the validity of sources and facts before passing on such news to others. Pizzagate was a conspiracy theory that went viral during the 2016 Presidential Election campaign, which alleged there was a child-sex ring taking place and the top Democrats had something to do with it (Pizzagate: A Slice of Fake News). Some believe it all started when John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, had his email account hacked. Tons of emails were leaked and made public. His emails were said to contain coded messages that referred to human trafficking and were also connected to the Comet Ping Pong pizza parlor (“Pizzagate: A Slice of Fake News). James Alefantis is the owner of the Comet Ping Pong and also an acquaintance of Podesta. One email did contain Podesta and Alefantis discussing a fundraiser idea for Hillary Clinton, but no talk happened about the alleged child-sex ring. While this ‘news’ was spreading fast, Alefantis and his forty plus employees were receiving deaths threats, negative tweets on Twitter and Facebook, and facing harassing altercations with strangers. The staff observed social media outlets and “counted five #pizzagate Twitter posts a minute” at one point (Kang). Alefantis himself said that, “From this insane, fabricated conspiracy theory, we’ve come under constant assault.” (Kang) The only people that know what is true in the Pizzagate conspiracy theory are the ones who are
In the wake of the Watergate scandal, however, that dynamic changed completely. Bob Woodward’s and Carl Berstein’s single-minded pursuit of the real perpetrators of Watergate seemingly unlocked a new, aggressive form of journalism, investigative journalism, which completely change the way media interacted with the government (Streissguth, 2006, p.51). In Media Bias, Tom Streissguth (2006) explains that “before the turn of the twentieth century, political leaders were largely immune from personal attacks” and that “...their private lives and professional crimes held little interest for newspapers editors” (p. 47). One major revelation that the scandal introduced was how interested the public was in politicians’ transgressions. Shortly after Watergate, Congressmen Wilber Mill was involved in a drunken driving accident and after being torn apart by the media, he had to resign. But no politician got the full brunt of private-life attacks as President Bill Clinton, who narrowly escaped being trialed on “perjury and obstruction of justice” (Streissguth, 2006, p.53).
On the third, Trump tweeted “The rigged Dem Primary, one of the biggest political stories in years, got ZERO coverage on Fake News Network TV last night. Disgraceful!”. Trump attempts to show the extent of bias in the media exposing that they didn’t report a major event. This tweet has bias towards Trump’s personal agenda against the media. Additionally, Trump exposes the strength of the media’s gatekeepers and how greatly they can impact which issues are talked about.
Trump's campaign rallies attracted large crowds, as well as public controversy. Some of the events were marked by incidents of violence between Trump supporters and protesters, perceived mistreatment of some journalists, and disruption by a large group of protesters who effectively shut down a major rally in Chicago. Trump was accused[29] of inciting violence at his rallies.[30][31][32]
Even before President Clinton would become president the first of his cheating scandals would hit the press in January of 1992 the tabloid magazine The Star would break the story of Gennifer Flowers and Bill Clinton’s affair. Ms. Flowers would claim an affair that lasted over 12 years but with little evidence of an affair it amounted to nothing more than water cooler talk. It would be 1997 before then President Clinton would admit that he did have intimate knowledge of Ms. Flowers but that it only occurred one time. This revelation would come during the course of another Clinton scandal, that of Paula Jones. Paula Jones a former Arkansas State Employee during President Clinton’s years as Governor of Arkansas filed sexual harassment charges against Clinton.
I find myself, regardless of how assiduous work became this past year, still hearing the rhetoric of politicians, media circles and celebrities. Wondering how citizens can disrespect the office of president a place once revered as the highest honor. One would think the rhetoric would end, but yet it seemed the disrespect continued long after Trump was elected president of the USA. I heard Denzel Washington remark a news reporter about how important their task is to not only report something first, but accurately and honestly.
While Trump was speaking at Muscatine High School two protesters were kicked out when they interrupted Trump. Shortly after the campaign rally was over the media had many stories about the incident. A video surfaced with the title “Trump Mocks Protester Wearing Turban” (Hensley). In the video it showed the protesters interrupting, then Trump trying to make light of the situation. What happened was Trump pointed to someone in the audience wearing a red Trump hat and said, “He wasn’t wearing one of those hats, was he?”, talking about the Trump hats his campaign sells. The media made the video look as if Trump rudely said, “He wasn’t wearing one of those hats, was he?”, leaving out the part of Trump pointing at his campaign hat. This made it seem as if he was specifically talking about the protester’s turban. As a spectator in the audience watching the whole incident play out it was clear that the media had twisted the story. A few days later very few newscasters came out with headlines such as the one stated by The Gateway Pundit, “Media Falsely Smears Trump as Mocking Turban Wearing Protester Ejected From Rally” (Taylor). This is just one of the many examples of the media falsely reporting about Donald
Even before his presidency, Trump has expressed distaste toward the media. For example, during February of 2016, Trump claimed he would create Libel laws if he won the presidency. Trump explained creating Libel laws would make it easier to sue organizations that purposefully defaced his character. Libel laws would create stricter criteria that media would have to follow.
