Omnipresence Of Art

I have been to the Frist many times, but this past experience was different. One exhibit, named Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art, fully captivated me and with each piece I was more intrigued. This collection of artwork was organized by Frist Center Chief Curator Mark Scala and includes many different contemporary artists echoing similar themes. The gallery explores the idea of unseen forces that make up our essence and illustrates connections between mind, body, and soul.

For as long as humankind has been around, humans have created and been engrossed with artwork. Art, whether in the form of music, paintings, movies, etc., can have multiple functions, including telling a story, providing a moral lesson, engaging our emotions, or just being entertainment. In a world as diverse and imperfect as ours is, an artist’s intentions and morals can be controversial and viewed negatively depending on the place and time in which his or her artwork is viewed. While all art has a place in society, not all art is equal in quality and morality, but those are not interchangeable terms; morality corrupt art can be beautiful and morally upstanding art can be of lesser quality. In this paper, I argue that a work of art can be both beautiful and evil at the same time, and that a piece of evil art can be just as important to society as a piece of wholesome art.

Existentialism is highly regarded when it comes to artists and artwork. Sartre is a well-known prominent advocate in the post war period. Sartre wrote essays about artists work which helped viewers translate philosophy into visual art and by doing this viewers are able to understand the reasons behind the artwork and along with the understanding comes a deeper appreciation for the art. If man is unexplainable it is because we make ourselves so if he is “indefinable it is because at first he is nothing” (Sartre) he must create who he will be.( www.theartstory.org) Sartre spoke these words to the artwork of the post war period. Jean Dubuffet and Wols art work is able to address the coexistence of mind and body on which humans need. Ponty believes that art does not have to be perfect and symmetrical its science does not have to be exact as long as it captures the eye of the observers than it has done its job correctly. Existentialism in art is for the artist to be completely free with every stroke of the hand. The art of the artist is dependent on the time and place in which the artist is born. Following the first and second World Wars, the decades of fighting and relentless political turmoil it comes as no surprise that a philosophy that invokes man, the individual’s existence at its core had such an extensive following. This is why existentialist art flourishes after times of war because people want to express their feeling of freedom and the importance of the individual.

Walking into the gallery toward Untitled #9, the work looks to me just like a dirty canvas, particularly in contrast to the pristine white of the gallery wall. So my first instinct is to look at the work, dismiss it and look away. But since I have made a commitment to stay with this work, I try to ignore the surrounding paintings composed of vibrant color and movement that my eye gloms onto.. It's hard to pull my gaze back to the Martin work, but I do and then start to take notes on its components(the process of which has provided somewhat of a diversion from the daunting blankness of the canvas). It is a rather large, square work; I read that it is six feet by six feet. As I get closer I see that the square is divided into 9 squares high and 6 squares wide, each square divided into 8 narrow rectangles. It reminds me of the notebooks French students use , perfect grids to aid in Cartesian analysis - clarity as a means of finding truth. Like the notebooks, the grids on the canvas start to create a clarity and peacefulness in my mind.

The three pieces of Art chosen to be discussed in this essay range in style and meaning but all seem to tie together a symbol of power. In Sutton Hoo the wealth is shown through the purse lid and it exquisite components it was made from, the Bayeux Tapestry shows the power of the Norman Conquest and their leader William the conquer, and finally the immaculate Sistine Chapel with emphasis on The Creation of Adam that shows the power of God and also the skill of Michelangelo.

Artifacts that they may find would be such things like maybe household items such as tvs, computers, phones, etc. This would reflect that we had advanced technology. They would find cookwares like pots, pans, utensils and appliances like stoves and ovens, this would reveal that we knew such things like cooking. Other artifacts they might find are items like furniture, this might indicated that people took up roles in our society as craftsmen. They might find lost pieces of artwork, sculptures or even shards of pottery, this would mean there were many different sorts of artists in our society. Different areas of worship would be found like a church or an Islamic center, the anthropologists could even theorize that our society had many different

The Girl with a pearl earring is a film that takes place in the seventeenth century in the Netherland. The film illustrates the life of a famous Jan Vermeer and his intimate relationship with his maid Griet. Griet is a 16th years old girl who comes from a Dutch family and her family economic and social status lead Griet to become a maid in Vermeer’s household. Griet learns that the only way she can help her family was to work as a maid in the artist household. This paper will analyze and discuss the film The Girl with a Pearl Earring and some of the main themes of art such as art and the cycle of life, art and power, and gender in art.

The first art work I observed was called “Black Is the Color” by Paul Stephen Benjamin. The artwork is located in the Stent Family Wing of the High Museum, it was produced in 2014 and is from the modern time period. The structure is made of old televisions of all shapes and sizes are unevenly stacked on top of each other much unorganized. The televisions come about five feet off the ground, and there are wild cords wrapped around the floor and also some of the televisions. The space where the televisions are located is very dark, the only light in the area comes from the televisions themselves. On the screen of the television is an African-American women singing into a microphone, playing the piano as well. In some televisions the picture is cropped and you can only see her face and the piano can’t be seen to the viewer. In other televisions the color of the actual picture is different from others.

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was a prolific writer, whose style changed with each new novel, and her work represented the historical moment when art was integrated into society. Her modernist novel To the Lighthouse stray's from the conventional forms of writing, concentrating not on the plot but on the characters' consciousness and physical development. Woolf’s novel produces an innovative type of narrative which depicts realities beneath appearances, and at the same time brings about a deep exploration of the human mind.

Pause, reflect, and the reader may see at once the opposing yet relative perceptions made between life, love, marriage and death in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. In this novel, Woolf seems to capture perfectly the very essence of life, while conveying life’s significance as communicated to the reader in light tones of consciousness arranged with the play of visual imagery. That is, each character in the novel plays an intrinsic role in that the individuality of other characters can be seen only through the former’s psyche. Moreover, every aspect of this novel plays a significant role in its creation. Although it seems obvious, an interesting fact about art that is frequently glanced over is that art is meant to be shared. An artist such as Damian Hirst didn’t put his great his artwork of the shark with its mouth open and suspended in a tank of formaldehyde in a dark room to let it collect dust. Rather he shares his piece and hopes “anyone will buy it.” Hirst’s eagerness to display his work stems from wanting to display the bond he had with his art. However, if a viewer were to have a different bond from examining the art, creating the art might seam fruitless because the artist will go through the trouble to share their connection when the viewer would see something different. It would be as if a child excitedly runs towards their parent to present their drawing of a cat and the parent says “Oh look at this great tree.”

The two works of art that I have chosen for this paper are The Lacemaker by Nicolaes Maes and Young Women Drawing by Marie-Denise Villers. Each painting that I have analyzed displayed a different subject matter and showed the importance of what the artist wanted to represent in his paintings. How they wanted us to see the values and the attributions being depicted in their work. What it meant for them and how it held such a great significance.

Visual Merchandisers have many employment options available in many different sectors. I believe that displays are all encompassing. It is the little details that culminate a theme or feel that makes customers want to shop at a particular store and have a certain type of experience depending on who they are. It is all about making an environment whether a store, a party, a home, etc. as inviting and welcoming as possible. I strongly believe that there is so much inspiration out there that can be used to create compelling store displays that provoke consumers to shop and help maximize a store’s profits. This is an interesting field where not only are artistic skills necessary, but also the ability to merchandise the sales floor and make every visual aspect of a store experience enjoyable.

As art becomes more prevalent, intricate, and sophisticated in culture so does its impact on a viewer. A viewer must experience a work of art and connect to it in order for it to be considered effective. Aristotle, one of the most renowned Greek philosophers, believes in this idea and that is why Ajax by Sophocles can be considered a work of art. Sophocles’ play follows a warrior named Ajax who was threatening to kill Odysseus to obtain the armor he believed was rightfully his, which causes the goddess Athena to cast a curse leaving him blind with rage and in a state where he slaughters hordes of animals believing that they are his enemies. Ajax later becomes distraught to the point of suicide. Bryan Doerries produced a version of Ajax to relate to veterans through his company, Theater of War. This company’s specific purpose is to "de-stigmatize psychological injury, increase awareness of post deployment psychological health issues, disseminate information regarding available resources, and foster greater family community, and troop resilience" through the performance of Ancient Greek plays to military and civilian communities (Outside the Wire). Because of this purpose, the audience is able to form an intense connection with Ajax and fulfill the purpose of art. While looking at Aristotle’s Theory of Tragedy and the six most important features of a tragedy, it becomes apparent that connection in all six features is the only way to create effective art. Art has played an important role in the history of the world as well as it has been one of the most important elements of life. When food and water are very important for our physical bodies to keep on working, art is the element that feeds our souls. Art can affect our emotions; sad, happy, calm, excited and more, as well as it adds more color into life. It helps delivering imagination, point of view and desire of the artist to the audience visually. Art has so many forms such as painting, drawing, sculpture, crafting, photography, performance art and more, but it does not matter where the artist comes from or what his point of view is, art is his tool that is used to transfer his dream, his feeling about everything in life into his paintings or sculptures. Among hundreds of topics, unclothed body is one of the greatest topic that inspires artists of all time. The Olympia by Manet was one of the most popular nude figure paintings. Olympia ,was hung in 1865, gave its viewers the most uneasy feelings. On the painting, there is a nude woman lying on a bed with a black ribbon around her neck, gold bracelet on her wrist, a flower on her hair and an expensive slipper on her feet. Especially, there is a dark shadow between her hand and her genitals which obviously describing her identity as a prostitute. Also, there are a cat , that is arching it's back, and a black maid, who is holding the flowers at the foot of the bed, on the painting but both of them we ignored by the young
