Olaf Tryggvason was born in Norway, 963 AD and Died in Denmark, 1000 AD.
He was the son of Tryggve Olafsson and the great grandson of the first king of Norway, Harold Fairhair. Olaf had two siblings, Astrid Tryggvesdatter (named after his mother) and Ingeborg Tryggvasdotter.
Olaf was the king of Norway from 995 to 1000 AD. He was born soon after his father (Tryggve Olafsson) was killed by the Norwegian ruler, Harald. After his father died, he fled to the court of St. Vladimir, with his mother Astrid Eiriksdatter. There he was trained as a viking warrior.
Olaf forcefully imposed Christianity on the areas he controlled, the coast and the western islands. But he did not have a lot of influence elsewhere. By ordering missionaries and baptizing
The Althing in Iceland accepted Christianity in 1000 A.D. (Roesdahl 269). Before that, I majority of Icelanders practiced the old faith, worshiping multiple gods. Many elements of Christianity were introduced though Viking exploration and cooperation with Christian nations, however. This is exemplified in The Saga of Gisli Sursson. Gisli died around twenty years before the particular Althing, but many aspects of his life indicate he was influenced by Christianity. The saga never mentions the faith by name, but references to the religion are there. Through the events portrayed in The Saga of Gisli Sursson, support is given for Christianity.
The story takes place in two countries: Norrønur and Ymiria. The time period isn’t mentioned specifically, but I can infer that it takes place about the time that the Vikings traveled the world. The main character, Karn, is from Norrønur. He is the eldest son in his family, which means that when his father dies, he will become the “hauld” or the leader of the family and farm. The only
Beowulf, the epic of England is about the importance of the family and a leader or a king. There was a kingdom named Danes led by king Hrothgar, Is an old man he had a wife younger than him and doesn’t love the king. King Hrothgar has a close friend and that was the father of Beowulf so that, king Hrothgar put Beowulf as his right hand to guide and led the group of Danish in every fights.
The Kingdom of Denmark was founded by viking king, Gorm the Old in the tenth century. This means that the current queen, Queen Margrethe II, is a descendant from vikings! Gorm’s son Harald Bluetooth helped unify Denmark geographically, and emotionally. Bluetooth and his descendants would assist England and Norway to do the
Hrothgar, king of the danes, also known as the protector of Shieldings and the helmet of Shieldings. Ruler of Heorot, son of Healfdene, lived in the early 6th century. He was a wise and aged ruler, who has become famous for his leadership and generosity. His status played a big influence on his behavior because he was a calm and very patient king, even though Heorot was being destroyed by Grendel. When Beowulf arrived he was very to meet and talk with him. He had known his father which had also been king of the Geats. He was very good about listening to him, explaining that he heard about what Grendel was doing to his town. He wanted to help and was glad that he came to follow up an old friendship. Hrothgar never let anyone influence the treatment
In the middle ages, Christianity was at the heart of politics and thus acceptance of the Christian faith was indeed a political matter in many respects. For many political leaders in the early period, acceptance of the Christian faith was used as a means to shape political image, as was clearly shown most famously by Clovis I. Further, acceptance of Christianity was also political in that it created ties with Rome which helped set the precedent of an incredibly influential papacy throughout the medieval period. It also notable that the conversion of ‘barbarian nations’ such as Denmark, signified cultural development and advancement for many people in Europe at the time and helped form the early form of a unified Europe by the early Middle Ages.
Beowulf also came from royal families. Hrethel is King of Geatland and Beowulf's mother's father, his maternal grandfather. Though Beowulf's mother is never named in the epic, we know she was Hrethel's daughter. Hrethel has four children, three sons Hygelac, Herebeald, and Haethycn and Beowulf's mother. His oldest son follows him as king. Hygelac is king of the Geats during Beowulf's time, and Beowulf's uncle. He is the oldest son of Hrethel. Hygelac married Hygd and they have a son named Heardred, who becomes king of Geatland when Hygelac dies. Though Hygd offers the crown to Beowulf, he declines to his cousin Heardred, saying the son of Hygelac should be king. Heardred took the throne that Beowulf refused. Unfortunately, he was killed in
He protected his kingdom from three different attacks first Grendel, Grendel's mother and then the dragon. Beowulf put his life in danger so that he protect the Danes. He is an honorable and heroic warrior, rewarding his loyal thanes and taking care of his people. Finally he became king of the Danes protecting the greats from all the other tribes around them. The strongest example of him protecting his people is his fight with the dragon.
He favoured untitled people and low nobility as administrators on the royal castles, as well as Danes as administrators in Norway, in order to keep a hold on events. In addition to that, King Hans led a highly provocative policy towards the Hanseatic cities, particularly Lübeck, which led to war. His most famous act as king was a completely unsuccessful attempt at forcing the peasants of Ditmarschen, west of Holstein, into submission. The year after that, he was ousted from his brief dominion over Sweden. A year after that, he seems to have been unfortunately implicated in the murder of his leading official and the largest landowner in the
His parents were Crinan, the Abbot of Dunkeld and Bethoc, the daughter of King Malcolm II. Duncan became king after his grandfather, Malcolm II, had passed away. No one was against the idea of him being king, so his reign began. He then married a woman, named Sibyl Biornsson who’s the daughter of the Earl of Northumbria, and had three children, Malcolm and Donalbain and the other who’s name shall not be mentioned, who will inherit his crown in the future with Malcolm receiving it first. For a long while during his reign, nothing much as has happened.

Majority of the solid knowledge and evidence surrounding ‘Nordic Paganism’ was devised from archeological discoveries that were actually composed after the Christianization of Scandinavia. This unfortunately suggests that the information provided as evidence towards the existence of these beliefs is somewhat inconsistent. The introduction of Christianity challenged the structure and stability provided by the indigenous Nordic religions. Unfamiliar ideas such as Original Sin (Adam & Eve), Incarnation (Jesus is both God and human) and the Trinity, all created a considerable confusion for the Norse
his mother, who was as evil as Grendel to fight for the good of his people. Beowulf stated he was
“There Hygd proffered him… the king’s seat; she trusted not her son that he would know how to hold his ancestral seats against stranger folk, seeing Hygelac was dead. ”(47). Hygelac, king of the Weder-Geats, has died in battle, and the queen asked Beowulf to rule in her son’s place. Beowulf does not want to be king over Heardred, prince of the Geats. He chooses instead to help Heardred until he was able to rule the Weder-Geats himself. Beowulf only became king when both descendants of Hygelac had perished. “...through shocks of battle, after Hygelac fell and the war-swords had slain Heardred beneath his shield’s shelter...and overthrew the nephew of Heneric in war; thereafter was it the broad realm fell into the hand of Beowulf”(44). Beowulf was a great king to the Weder-Geats for fifty years. He was respected and cared for all of his people. He did not seek out wars, or glory at the expense of his people, but instead protected them from any enemies. “I have ruled the people fifty years; no folk-king was there of them that dealt about me durst touch me with his sword or cow me through terror, I bided at home the hours of destiny, guarded well mine own, sought not feuds with guile, swore not many an oath unjustly”(54). Beowulf shows selflessness in many of his acts, especially when he reigned as king. He did not put his people in unnecessary danger, but instead cared for their needs. This made him a hero to his people as their
