Across the Atlantic, Germany started the world’s largest beer event Oktoberfest in 1810 when King Ludwig got married and a festival was held for the royal wedding. At the start, Oktoberfest main focus was on horse races, however, more and more beer stands were popping up and then beer tents started taking their place. In order for breweries to serve their beer in the event, the beer had to be brewed in Munich and it also had to be in compliance with the Reinheitsgebot purity laws. Today, Oktoberfest's first focus is beer but, now, there are many rides and attractions to see while at the fair.
Around the late 1800’s the birth of modern beer took place in response to commercial refrigeration, pasteurization, automatic bottling and railroad transportation. Before the “Modern Era” the average person only had access to beer through taverns because it would have been too costly to individually bottle. They were stored in large barrels for the tavern and had a finite shelf life. Transportation was also an issue before railroads because the large barrels were burdensome to transport. Due to the hassle and cost of transportation, it was rare to see beer outside town limits. In the modern era, beer could be bottled cheaper and pasteurized so it could survive a longer rail journey in less than ideal temperatures. Beer was

It was the year New Albion Brewing Co. was founded and is considered the birth, or rebirth rather, of craft brewing. New Albion was founded after Jack McAuliffe was stationed in Europe where he enjoyed quality beers there. After coming back to the U.S. he could only find the large company lagers and decided he would create a brewery with a focus on quality and taste. The brewery only lasted 6 years but the craft beer “movement” is still around to this day. Today there are over 1800 craft breweries in the US and it is one of the fastest growing segments in beer with an almost 19% growth rate for
Beer was existent in a time where there was a great increase in social intricacy because of the creation of cities from the settling of humanity after its practice of being nomadic.
Beer, the first beverage appeared as a result of changed lifestyle for the early humans. Before, humans were nomads, who would follow their food (pg. 9). But starting about 12,000 years ago humans had picked up on a new lifestyle (pg. 9). These small bands of about 30 people were now settling down in more permanent areas and had abandoned their old ways of constantly traveling (pg. 9). This drastic turning point in human history seemed to primarily come from one reason, the discovery of beer (pg.11). As beer was basically formed from the gathering of barley and wheat, humans had to form some type of permanent residency, and abandon their old nomadic lifestyle (pg.11).
Originally located in Cranston, Rhode Island, the Narragansett Brewing Company was founded in 1888 by six business men of German origin. Two years later, the brewery was built, and George Wilhelm of Berlin Germany was appointed Brew master. During the next 20 years, Narragansett Brewery blossomed into the largest Brewery in New England. In 1914, they expanded their business further to include the largest and most hygienic bottling system in New England. They were granted a license by the U.S. Government that would allow them to continue to sell beer through Prohibition for “medicinal purposes” only. (Anderson, 1988)
As beer started becoming a necessity, it showed the strong need for agriculture in society. People came together, to make an industry of beer, and creating civilizations.
Beer started out as gruel, and as the gruel fermented it turned into beer. Now it was not the first form of alcohol, but it was an important kind of alcohol. Beer was made from cereal crops, which were very abundant, and because it was so abundant it could be made whenever it was needed. They then found an even easier way to make beer by using beer-bread. Beer bread is basically everything needed to make beer in a loaf, making it convenient to store the raw beer materials. Beer started as just a social drink but then blossomed into a “hallmark of civilization”, as seen by the Mesopotamians. Grain was the basis of the national diet, it was
Some of the more popular fests being the Dog Bowl, Bavarian Fest, Oktober and the World Expo of Beer. The Dog Bowl is an Olympic-style competition for dogs. Dogs of many different breeds compete for superiority in this energy-filled event. The event usually takes place on Memorial Day weekends. Dog races, swimming events, chasing fake squirrels and more can be found here. It is a great time of the year to visit Frankenmuth as both the people and dogs enjoy this event. Though, most take this event light-heartedly, there are plenty of people who take too seriously. Another one of Frankenmuth’s signature festivals, is the Bavarian Fest where they celebrate their roots and tourists get to taste authentic food and drinks from Bavaria. The Bavarian Fest is usually a very popular way to experience German food, beer, music and life. It is the perfect place to taste all the cakes and other desserts Bavarians are famous for. The World Beer Expo is actually a fundraiser event. There are about 300 types of beers from around the world in this epic gathering. It is organized by Frankenmuth Jaycees and helps organizations and companies which need funding in order to have a
The Boston Beer Company, Inc., founded in 1984, is a leading brewer in United States, offering wide variety of high quality full-flavored, handcraftedbeers. Boston Beer, in response to consumers’ preference changes to more flavorful and bitter tasting brews, was founded in 1894. Boston Beer implements a “quality at any cost” strategy with a strong emphasis on product differentiation and implementing quality ingredients into its products. It is strongly linked to the traditional Christmas market in wonderful settings. You 'll find plenty of hand-crafted Christmas decorations, cute little incense burners, wooden-carved toys, and nativity scenes to place at the heart of your Christmas display. Germany 's first Christmas market was recorded in 1393. Today, there are thousands of them all over the country. Both gingerbread houses and the Nutcracker came from German stories. Another tradition celebrated in parts of Texas is Oktoberfest. This 16-day festival in Munich attracts over six million visitors per year who consume about 1,320,860 gallons of beer, 400,000 pork sausages and 480,000 roasted chickens. It started October 12, 1810, at the wedding of Bavaria 's Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Against tradition, the couple invited Munich 's locals. The events were held over five days on the fields that today are named Theresienwiese after the bride.
Adolph Coors company is a brewery with a long history. It was founded in 1873 and managed to make it through Prohibition by diversifying into near beer, malted milk, cement, and porcelain. Starting in 1958 the company brewed only one beer “Coors Banquet”. In 1978 when it introduced Coors Light, it only took 7 years for this light beer to become 40% of the company’s revenue building brand and to become the second best-selling light beer on the market.
From fancy beer to the lowest quality that you could receive, beer was presented in celebrations or events because this drink “brought people together since the dawn of civilization” and this bringing together allowed the exchange of cultures and traditions to be passed down from generation to generation just like wine (39). These interactions shaped the mind of man, and helped them have
Wines and, beer are famous all over the world, which leads to the popular German social gathering at an outdoor beer or wine garden or cellar restaurant.
Oktoberfest's history first begins around Prince Ludwig, later to be known as King Ludwig I, and his marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Their wedding was celebrated in Bavaria on October 17th, but rather on October 12th is when the real celebration began. The soon-to-be-wed hosted a large feast, five days before their wedding, in front of the Sendlinger Tor; one of the many gates leading to Munich. This feast included multiple events and festivities like horse races, which were a custom until 1938. In 1811, an agricultural fair was added and 7 years later, beer pubs were also added that incorporated
The brewery’s lowest period began at midnight on Jan. 16, 1920, when the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution went into effect, “National Prohibition” outlawing the sale of alcohol. (Ancestry, n.d.) Anheuser-Busch Brewery was shut-down for 13 years. Unemployment rates were on the rise as breweries closed their doors. Crime rates hit the roof as people began turning their homes into breweries giving rise to underground bars known as “speakeasies” during the roaring 20s where women drinkers were not frowned upon. Some large-scale, underground operations were raided by federal agents. (Ancestry, n.d.) Anheuser-Busch Brewery was large enough to diversify and remained in business by marketing more than 25 different non-alcohol products such as soft drinks, truck bodies, smoked meats, and ice cream. From beer steins, to tractors, to a week's’ worth of bad decisions. This is Oktoberfest. How unique a festival it may be, you have to wonder where it all started. Believe it or not, but this festival has been an ongoing tradition for the last 200 years. Started in the early 1800’s it originates in Germany. This manic event has leaped across continents and has become a very engrossed tradition of the United States. Oktoberfest might just look like a drunk friend get together from an outsider… and it is… but beyond the beer its history brings it a whole new prospective, marking in a strong community, and breaking records as the largest international festival in the world. Oktoberfest is like a fine beer, made with cautious precision, and aged appropriately, only to share with all your friends once finally ready to taste!
