Okonkwo's violence in this novel says a lot about his character. The acts of violence keep the story interesting and also aid the development of the theme. There have been numerous occasions of violence that clue us, the readers, what kind of man Okonkwo is as well as how their culture is. Not only do these acts make this story one worth discussing, it makes it one worth reading.

Things Fall Apart” is a good book, however it is one with a slow beginning. The book's introduction is not necessarily interesting until chapter four where he beats his wife during the week of peace. I think there was a certain culture shock that the only thing wrong with this beating was the time he decided to do it. It says “Okonkwo was not the man to stop beating someone half-way through, not even for fear of a goddess.”(21) He beat his wife even though he knew he would later be punished by the goddess. After that incident their culture became so evident and so particular that the story was highly alluring. …show more content…

But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness.” (9) There are many clues throughout the story that display a different side to Okonkwo, one that is compassionate and caring about others. When the incident with Ezinma occurs it truly shows another side of Okonkwo. “He had felt very anxious but did not show it.” (85) He was worried about his daughter yet was afraid to show it because of the fear that he would be viewed as weak. The subtle hints throughout this story that clue into Okonkwo's softer side show a possible moral to the story. One that states even the hardest or seemingly callous of individuals have a softer side, one that emits compassion and a sensible
